Parameter-robust well-posedness and discretisation for coupled Darcy--Forchheimer and advection-diffusion-reaction equations

We adapt the recent theory for unique solvability of perturbed saddle-point problems in Banach spaces to the case of parameter-independent stability bounds. This also constitutes an extension to the Brezzi--Braess theory for parameter-robust stability of perturbed saddle-point problems from the Hilbert to the Banach setting. We apply the new abstract result to the mixed formulation of the advection-diffusion-reaction equation and tackle also its coupling with the Darcy--Forchheimer equations. The complete system is shown to be stable irrespective of the model parameters of permeability, Forchheimer coefficient, and reaction modulation. We discretise the problem with mixed finite element methods and show convergence in appropriately parameter-weighted norms. We also design operator-based preconditioners for the full system, utilising weighted norms that provide robustness with respect to model parameters.

Discontinuous Galerkin IMEX Pressure Correction Scheme for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes Equations

Based on a discontinuous Galerkin method in the spatial directions and an improved implicit-explicit pressure-correction scheme in the temporal direction, this paper discusses a fully discrete scheme for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived in $L^2$ and in the energy norms for the concentrations of positive and negative ions, the electrostatic potential, the fluid velocity, and the $L^2$ norm of the fluid pressure. The discrete mass conservation properties of both ions are established. Finally, numerical simulations are performed, whose results confirm our theoretical findings.

Robust stability and preconditioning of Darcy-Forchheimer equations

We derive parameter-robust quasi-optimal error estimates for mixed finite element methods for the nonlinear Darcy--Forchheimer equations with mixed boundary conditions. Using the framework of operator preconditioning, we also design efficient block preconditioners for the linearised system, that exhibit robustness with respect to the coefficients that modulate permeability and inertia of the system. The properties of the formulation (parameter and mesh-size independence of the convergence rates) are illustrated by means of several numerical examples.

Error analysis with exponential decay estimates for a fully discrete approximation of a class of strongly damped wave equations

This paper deals with the asymptotic behavior and FEM error analysis of a class of strongly damped wave equations using a semidiscrete finite element method in spatial directions combined with a finite difference scheme in the time variable. For the continuous problem under weakly and strongly damping parameters $α$ and $β,$ respectively, a novel approach usually used for linear parabolic problems is employed to derive an exponential decay property with explicit rates, which depend on model parameters and the principal eigenvalue of the associated linear elliptic operator for the different cases of parameters such as $(i) \;α, β>0$, $ (ii)\; α>0, β\geq 0$ and $(iii)\;α\geq 0, β>0$. Subsequently, for a semi-discrete finite element scheme keeping the temporal variable continuous, optimal error estimates are derived that preserve exponential decay behavior. Some generalizations that include forcing terms and spatially as well as time-varying damping parameters are discussed. Moreover, an abstract discrete problem is discussed, and as a consequence, uniform decay estimates for finite difference as well as spectral approximations to the damped system are briefly indicated. A complete discrete scheme is developed and analyzed after applying a finite difference scheme in time, which again preserves the exponential decay property. The given proofs involve several energies with energy-based techniques to derive the consistency between continuous and discrete decay rates, in which the constants involved do not blow up as $α\to 0$ and $β\to 0$. Finally, several numerical experiments are conducted whose results support the theoretical findings, illustrate uniform decay rates, and explore the effects of parameters on stability and accuracy.

Error Estimates for Discontinuous Galerkin Approximations to the Vlasov-Unsteady Stokes System

In the first part of this paper, uniqueness of strong solution is established for the Vlasov-unsteady Stokes problem in 3D. The second part deals with a semi discrete scheme, which is based on the coupling of discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the Vlasov and the Stokes equations for the 2D problem. The proposed method is both mass and momentum conservative. Based on a special projection and also the Stokes projection, optimal error estimates in the case of smooth compactly supported initial data are derived. Moreover, the generalization of error estimates to 3D problem is also indicated. Finally, based on time splitting algorithm, some numerical experiments are conducted whose results confirm our theoretical findings.

On a Completely Discrete Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Incompressible Chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes Equations

This paper deals with a fully discrete numerical scheme for the incompressible Chemotaxis(Keller-Segel)-Navier-Stokes system. Based on a discontinuous Galerkin finite element scheme in the spatial directions, a semi-implicit first-order finite difference method in the temporal direction is applied to derive a completely discrete scheme. With the help of a new projection, optimal error estimates in $L^2$ and $H^1$-norms for the cell density, the concentration of chemical substances and the fluid velocity are derived. Further, optimal error bound in $L^2$-norm for the fluid pressure is obtained. Finally, some numerical simulations are performed, whose results confirm the theoretical findings.

Finite element approximation to the non-stationary quasi-geostrophic equation

In this paper, C1-conforming element methods are analyzed for the stream function formulation of a single layer non-stationary quasi-geostrophic equation in the ocean circulation model. In its first part, some new regularity results are derived, which show exponential decay property when the wind shear stress is zero or exponentially decaying. Moreover, when the wind shear stress is independent of time, the existence of an attractor is established. In its second part, finite element methods are applied in the spatial direction and for the resulting semi-discrete scheme, the exponential decay property, and the existence of a discrete attractor are proved. By introducing an intermediate solution of a discrete linearized problem, optimal error estimates are derived. Based on backward-Euler method, a completely discrete scheme is obtained and uniform in time a priori estimates are established. Moreover, the existence of a discrete solution is proved by appealing to a variant of the Brouwer fixed point theorem and then, optimal error estimate is derived. Finally, several computational experiments with benchmark problems are conducted to confirm our theoretical findings.

On a Non-Uniform $α$-Robust IMEX-L1 Mixed FEM for Time-Fractional PIDEs

A non-uniform implicit-explicit L1 mixed finite element method (IMEX-L1-MFEM) is investigated for a class of time-fractional partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs) with space-time dependent coefficients and non-self-adjoint elliptic part. The proposed fully discrete method combines an IMEX-L1 method on a graded mesh in the temporal variable with a mixed finite element method in spatial variables. The focus of the study is to analyze stability results and to establish optimal error estimates, up to a logarithmic factor, for both the solution and the flux in $L^2$-norm when the initial data $u_0\in H_0^1(Ω)\cap H^2(Ω)$. Additionally, an error estimate in $L^\infty$-norm is derived for 2D problems. All the derived estimates and bounds in this article remain valid as $α\to 1^{-}$, where $α$ is the order of the Caputo fractional derivative. Finally, the results of several numerical experiments conducted at the end of this paper are confirming our theoretical findings.

Asymptotic behaviour of the semidiscrete FE approximations to weakly damped wave equations with minimal smoothness on initial data

Exponential decay estimates of a general linear weakly damped wave equation are studied with decay rate lying in a range. Based on the $C^0$-conforming finite element method to discretize spatial variables keeping temporal variable continuous, a semidiscrete system is analysed, and uniform decay estimates are derived with precisely the same decay rate as in the continuous case. Optimal error estimates with minimal smoothness assumptions on the initial data are established, which preserve exponential decay rate, and for a 2D problem, the maximum error bound is also proved. The present analysis is then generalized to include the problems with non-homogeneous forcing function, space-dependent damping, and problems with compensator. It is observed that decay rates are improved with large viscous damping and compensator. Finally, some numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results established in this paper.

Optimal error analysis of a non-uniform IMEX-L1 finite element method for time fractional PDEs and PIDEs

Stability and optimal convergence analysis of a non-uniform implicit-explicit L1 finite element method (IMEX-L1-FEM) is studied for a class of time-fractional linear partial differential/integro-differential equations with non-self-adjoint elliptic part having (space-time) variable coefficients. The proposed scheme is based on a combination of an IMEX-L1 method on graded mesh in the temporal direction and a finite element method in the spatial direction. With the help of a discrete fractional Grönwall inequality, global almost optimal error estimates in $L^2$- and $H^1$-norms are derived for the problem with initial data $u_0 \in H_0^1(Ω)\cap H^2(Ω)$. The novelty of our approach is based on managing the interaction of the L1 approximation of the fractional derivative and the time discrete elliptic operator to derive the optimal estimate in $H^1$-norm directly. Furthermore, a super convergence result is established when the elliptic operator is self-adjoint with time and space varying coefficients, and as a consequence, an $L^\infty$ error estimate is obtained for 2D problems that too with the initial condition is in $ H_0^1(Ω)\cap H^2(Ω)$. All results proved in this paper are valid uniformly as $α\longrightarrow 1^{-}$, where $α$ is the order of the Caputo fractional derivative. Numerical experiments are presented to validate our theoretical findings.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Vlasov-Stokes' system

This paper develops and analyses semi-discrete numerical method for two dimensional Vlasov-Stokes' system with periodic boundary condition. The method is based on coupling of semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method for the Vlasov equation with discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the stationary incompressible Stokes' equation. The proposed method is both mass and momentum conservative. Since it is difficult to establish non-negativity of the discrete local density, the generalized discrete Stokes' operator become non-coercive and indefinite and under smallness condition on the discretization parameter, optimal error estimates are established with help of a modified the Stokes' projection to deal with Stokes' part and with the help of a special projection to tackle the Vlasov part. Finally, numerical experiments based on the dG method combined with a splitting algorithm are performed.

Optimal error estimates of the penalty finite element method for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations with nonsmooth initial data

In this paper, both semidiscrete and fully discrete finite element methods are analyzed for the penalized two-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes equations with nonsmooth initial data. First order backward Euler method is applied for the time discretization, whereas conforming finite element method is used for the spatial discretization. Optimal $L^2$ error estimates for the semidiscrete as well as the fully discrete approximations of the velocity and of the pressure are derived for realistically assumed conditions on the data. The main ingredient in the proof is the appropriate exploitation of the inverse of the penalized Stokes operator, negative norm estimates and time weighted estimates. Numerical examples are discussed at the end which conform our theoretical results.

Periodic Vlasov-Stokes' system: Existence and Uniqueness of strong solutions

This paper deals with the Vlasov-Stokes' system in three dimensions with periodic boundary conditions in the spatial variable. We prove the existence of a unique strong solution to this two-phase model under the assumption that initial velocity moments of certain order are bounded. We use a fixed point argument to arrive at a global-in-time solution.

Discontinuous Galerkin Methods with Generalized Numerical Fluxes for the Vlasov-Viscous Burgers' System

In this paper, semi-discrete numerical scheme for the approximation of the periodic Vlasov-viscous Burgers' system is developed and analyzed. The scheme is based on the coupling of discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the Vlasov equation and local discontinuous Galerkin approximations for the viscous Burgers' equation. Both these methods use generalized numerical fluxes. The proposed scheme is both mass and momentum conservative. Based on generalized Gauss-Radau projections, optimal rates of convergence in the case of smooth compactly supported initial data are derived. Finally, computational results confirm our theoretical findings.

Nonconforming virtual elements for the biharmonic equation with Morley degrees of freedom on polygonal meshes

The lowest-order nonconforming virtual element extends the Morley triangular element to polygons for the approximation of the weak solution $u\in V:=H^2_0(Ω)$ to the biharmonic equation. The abstract framework allows (even a mixture of) two examples of the local discrete spaces $V_h(P)$ and a smoother allows rough source terms $F\in V^*=H^{-2}(Ω)$. The a priori and a posteriori error analysis in this paper circumvents any trace of second derivatives by some computable conforming companion operator $J:V_h\to V$ from the nonconforming virtual element space $V_h$. The operator $J$ is a right-inverse of the interpolation operator and leads to optimal error estimates in piecewise Sobolev norms without any additional regularity assumptions on $u\in V$. As a smoother the companion operator modifies the discrete right-hand side and then allows a quasi-best approximation. An explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimator is reliable and efficient up to data oscillations. Numerical examples display the predicted empirical convergence rates for uniform and optimal convergence rates for adaptive mesh-refinement.

A priori and a posteriori error analysis of the lowest-order NCVEM for second-order linear indefinite elliptic problems

The nonconforming virtual element method (NCVEM) for the approximation of the weak solution to a general linear second-order non-selfadjoint indefinite elliptic PDE in a polygonal domain is analyzed under reduced elliptic regularity. The main tool in the a priori error analysis is the connection between the nonconforming virtual element space and the Sobolev space $H^1_0(Ω)$ by a right-inverse $J$ of the interpolation operator $I_h$. The stability of the discrete solution allows for the proof of existence of a unique discrete solution, of a discrete inf-sup estimate and, consequently, for optimal error estimates in the $H^1$ and $L^2$ norms. The explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimate for the NCVEM is reliable and efficient up to the stabilization and oscillation terms. Numerical experiments on different types of polygonal meshes illustrate the robustness of an error estimator and support the improved convergence rate of an adaptive mesh-refinement in comparison to the uniform mesh-refinement.

Stability of mixed FEMs for non-selfadjoint indefinite second-order linear elliptic PDEs

For a well-posed non-selfadjoint indefinite second-order linear elliptic PDE with general coefficients $\mathbf A, \mathbf b,γ$ in $L^\infty$ and symmetric and uniformly positive definite coefficient matrix $\mathbf A$, this paper proves that mixed finite element problems are uniquely solvable and the discrete solutions are uniformly bounded, whenever the underlying shape-regular triangulation is sufficiently fine. This applies to the Raviart-Thomas (RT) and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (BDM) finite element families of any order and in any space dimension and leads to the best-approximation estimate in $H(div)\times L^2$ as well as in in $L^2\times L^2$ up to oscillations. This generalises earlier contributions for piecewise Lipschitz continuous coefficients to $L^\infty$ coefficients. The compactness argument of Schatz and Wang for the displacement-oriented problem does not apply immediately to the mixed formulation in $H(div)\times L^2$. But it allows the uniform approximation of some $L^2$ contributions and can be combined with a recent $L^2$ best-approximation result from the medius analysis. This technique circumvents any regularity assumption and the application of a Fortin interpolation operator.

Negative norm estimates and superconvergence results in Galerkin method for strongly nonlinear parabolic problems

The conforming finite element Galerkin method is applied to discretise in the spatial direction for a class of strongly nonlinear parabolic problems. Using elliptic projection of the associated linearised stationary problem with Gronwall type result, optimal error estimates are derived, when piecewise polynomials of degree $r\geq 1$ are used, which improve upon earlier results of Axelsson [Numer. Math. 28 (1977), pp. 1-14] requiring for 2d $r\geq 2$ and for 3d $r\geq 3.$ Based on quasi-projection technique introduced by Douglas {\it et al.} [Math. Comp.32 (1978),pp. 345-362], superconvergence result for the error between Galerkin approximation and approximation through quasi-projection is established for the semidiscrete Galerkin scheme. Further, {\it a priori} error estimates in Sobolev spaces of negative index are derived. Moreover, in a single space variable, nodal superconvergence results between the true solution and Galerkin approximation are established.
