Efficient HF exchange evaluation through Fourier convolution in Cartesian grid for orbital-dependent density functionals

We present a purely numerical approach in Cartesian grid, for efficient computation of Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange contribution in the HF and density functional theory models. This takes inspiration from a recently developed algorithm [Liu \emph{et al.}, J.~Chem.~Theor.~Comput.~ \textbf{13}, 2571 (2017)]. A key component is the accurate evaluation of electrostatic potential integral, which is the rate-determining step. This introduces the Fourier convolution theorem in conjunction with a range-separated Coulomb interaction kernel. The latter is efficiently mapped into real grid through a simple optimization procedure, giving rise to a constraint in the range-separated parameter. The overall process offers logarithmic scaling with respect to molecular size. It is then extended towards global hybrid functionals such as B3LYP, PBE0 and BHLYP within pseudopotential Kohn-Sham theory, through an LCAO-MO ansatz in Cartesian grid, developed earlier in our laboratory. For sake of comparison, a parallel semi-numerical approach has also been worked out that exploits the familiar Obara-Saika recursion algorithm. An excellent agreement between these two routes is demonstrated through total energy and orbital energy in a series of atoms and molecules (including 10 $π$-electron molecules), employing an LANL2DZ-type basis function. A critical analysis of these two algorithms reveals that the proposed numerical scheme could lead to very attractive and competitive scaling. The success of our approach also enables us for further development of optimally tuned range-separated hybrid and hyper functionals.

Quantum confinement in 1D systems through an imaginary-time evolution method

Quantum confinement is studied by numerically solving time-dependent Schrödinger equation. An imaginary-time evolution technique is employed in conjunction with the minimization of an expectation value, to reach the global minimum. Excited states are obtained by imposing the orthogonality constraint with all lower states. Applications are made on three important model quantum systems, namely, harmonic, repulsive and quartic oscillators; enclosed inside an impenetrable box. The resulting diffusion equation is solved using finite-difference method. Both symmetric and asymmetric confinement are considered for attractive potential; for others only symmetrical confinement. Accurate eigenvalue, eigenfunction and position expectation values are obtained, which show excellent agreement with existing literature results. Variation of energies with respect to box length is followed for small, intermediate and large sizes. In essence a simple accurate and reliable method is proposed for confinement in quantum systems.

Spherical confinement of Coulombic systems inside an impenetrable box: H atom and the Hulthén potential

The generalized pseudospectral method is employed to study spherical confinement in two simple Coulombic systems: (i) well celebrated and heavily studied H atom (ii) relatively less explored Hulthén potential. In both instances, arbitrary cavity size, as well as low and higher states are considered. Apart from bound state eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, expectation values, quite accurate estimates of the critical cage radius for H atom for all the 55 states corresponding to $n \leq 10$, are also examined. Some of the latter are better than previously reported values. Degeneracy and energy ordering under the isotropic confinement situation are discussed as well. The method produces consistently high-quality results for both potentials for small as well as large cavity size. For the H atom, present results are comparable to best theoretical values, while for the latter, this work gives considerably better estimates than all existing work so far.

Ground and excited states of spherically symmetric potentials through an imaginary-time evolution method: Application to spiked harmonic oscillators

Starting from a time-dependent Schrödinger equation, stationary states of 3D central potentials are obtained. An imaginary-time evolution technique coupled with the minimization of energy expectation value, subject to the orthogonality constraint leads to ground and excited states. The desired diffusion equation is solved by means of a finite-difference approach to produce accurate wave functions, energies, probability densities and other expectation values. Applications in case of 3D isotropic harmonic oscillator, Morse as well the spiked harmonic oscillator are made. Comparison with literature data reveals that this is able to produce high-quality and competitive results. The method could be useful for this and other similar potentials of interest in quantum mechanics. Future and outlook of the method is briefly discussed.

Information-entropic measures in free and confined hydrogen atom

Shannon entropy ($S$), R{é}nyi entropy ($R$), Tsallis entropy ($T$), Fisher information ($I$) and Onicescu energy ($E$) have been explored extensively in both \emph{free} H atom (FHA) and \emph{confined} H atom (CHA). For a given quantum state, accurate results are presented by employing respective \emph{exact} analytical wave functions in $r$ space. The $p$-space wave functions are generated from respective Fourier transforms$-$for FHA these can be expressed analytically in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials, whereas in CHA these are computed numerically. \emph{Exact} mathematical expressions of $R_r^α, R_p^β$, $T_r^α, T_p^β, E_r, E_p$ are derived for \emph{circular} states of a FHA. Pilot calculations are done taking order of entropic moments ($α, β$) as $(\frac{3}{5}, 3)$ in $r$ and $p$ spaces. A detailed, systematic analysis is performed for both FHA and CHA with respect to state indices $n,l$, and with confinement radius ($r_c$) for the latter. In a CHA, at small $r_{c}$, kinetic energy increases, whereas $S_{\rvec}, R^α_{\rvec}$ decrease with growth of $n$, signifying greater localization in high-lying states. At moderate $r_{c}$, there exists an interplay between two mutually opposing factors: (i) radial confinement (localization) and (ii) accumulation of radial nodes with growth of $n$ (delocalization). Most of these results are reported here for the first time, revealing many new interesting features. Comparison with literature results, wherever possible, offers excellent agreement.

Various complexity measures in confined hydrogen atom

Several well-known statistical measures similar to \emph{LMC} and \emph{Fisher-Shannon} complexity have been computed for confined hydrogen atom in both position ($r$) and momentum ($p$) spaces. Further, a more generalized form of these quantities with Rényi entropy ($R$) is explored here. The role of scaling parameter in the exponential part is also pursued. $R$ is evaluated taking order of entropic moments $α, β$ as $(\frac{2}{3},3)$ in $r$ and $p$ spaces. Detailed systematic results of these measures with respect to variation of confinement radius $r_c$ is presented for low-lying states such as, $1s$-$3d,~4f$ and $5g$. For \emph{nodal} states, such as $2s,~3s$ and $3p$, as $r_c$ progresses there appears a maximum followed by a minimum in $r$ space, having certain values of the scaling parameter. However, the corresponding $p$-space results lack such distinct patterns. This study reveals many other interesting features.

Fisher information in confined hydrogen-like ions

Fisher information (I) is investigated for confined hydrogen atom (CHA)-like systems in conjugate $r$ and $p$ spaces. A comparative study between CHA and free H atom (with respect to $I$) is pursued. In many aspects, inferences in CHA are significantly different from free counterpart; that includes its dependence on $n, l, m$. The role of atomic number and atomic radius is discussed. Further, a detailed systematic result of $I$ with respect to variation of confinement radius $r_c$ is presented, with particular emphasis on \emph{non-zero}-$(l,m)$ states. Several new interesting observations are recorded. Most of these results are of benchmark quality and presented for the first time.

Ro-vibrational studies of diatomic molecules in a shifted Deng-Fan oscillator potential

Bound-state spectra of shifted Deng-Fan oscillator potential are studied by means of a generalized pseudospectral method. Very accurate results are obtained for \emph{both low as well as high} states by a non-uniform optimal discretization of the radial Schrödinger equation. Excellent agreement with literature data is observed in \emph{both $s$-wave and rotational} states. Detailed variation of energies with respect to potential parameters is discussed. Application is made to the ro-vibrational levels of four representative diatomic molecules (H$_2$, LiH, HCl, CO). Nine states having $\{n,\ell\} =0,1,2$ are calculated with good accuracy along with 15 other higher states for each of these molecules. Variation of energies with respect to state indices $n$, $\ell$ show \emph{behavior} similar to that in the Morse potential. Many new states are reported here for the first time. In short, a simple, accurate and efficient method is presented for this and other similar potentials in molecular physics.

The generalized pseudospectral approach to the bound states of Hulthen and Yukawa potentials

The generalized pseudospectral method is employed to calculate the bound states of Hulthén and Yukawa potentials in quantum mechanics, with special emphases on higher excited states and stronger couplings. Accurate energy eigenvalues, expectation values and radial probability densities are obtained through a nonuniform and optimal spatial discretization of the radial Schrödinger equation. Results accurate up to thirteen to fourteen significant figures are reported for all the 55 eigenstates of both these potentials with $n\leq$10 for arbitrary values of the screening parameters covering a wide range of interaction. Furthermore, excited states as high as up to $n=17$ have been computed with good accuracy for both these potentials. Excellent agreement with the available literature data has been observed in all cases. The $n>6$ states of Yukawa potential has been considerably improved over all other existing results currently available, while the same for Hulthén potential are reported here for the first time. Excepting the $1s$ and $2s$ states of Yukawa potential, the present method surpasses in accuracy all other existing results in the stronger coupling region for all other states of both these systems. This offers a simple and efficient scheme for the accurate calculation of these and other screened Coulomb potentials.

Accurate ro-vibrational spectroscopy of diatomic molecules in a Morse oscillator potential

This work presents the bound-state spectra of Morse oscillator, which remains one of the oldest important model potentials for molecules. Accurate ro-vibrational energies are obtained by means of a generalized pseudospectral method that offers an optimal, non-uniform discretization of the radial grid. Both s-wave ($\ell=0$) and rotational ($\ell \neq 0$) states for low and high quantum numbers are calculated for four representative diatomic molecules, namely H$_2$, LiH, HCl and CO. First nine states belonging to a maximum of $n, \ell =2$ are computed with good accuracy, along with nine other high-lying states for each of these molecules. Present results \emph{surpass} the accuracy of \emph{all} hitherto published calculations found so far, except the tridiagonal J-matrix method, which produces similar accuracy as ours. Detailed variation of energies with respect to state indices $n,\ell$ show interesting behavior. A host of new states including the higher ones are reported as well. This offers a simple general efficient scheme for calculating these and other similar potentials in molecular physics.

A new DFT method for atoms and molecules in Cartesian grid

Electronic structure calculation of atoms and molecules, in the past few decades has largely been dominated by density functional methods. This is primarily due to the fact that this can account for electron correlation effects in a rigorous, tractable manner keeping the computational cost at a manageable level. With recent advances in methodological development, algorithmic progress as well as computer technology, larger physical, chemical and biological systems are amenable to quantum mechanical calculations than ever before. Here we report the development of a new method for accurate reliable description of atoms, molecules within the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). In a Cartesian grid, atom-centered localized basis set, electron density, molecular orbitals, two-body potentials are directly built on the grid. We employ a Fourier convolution method for classical Coulomb potentials by making an Ewald-type decomposition technique in terms of short- and long-range interactions. One-body matrix elements are obtained from standard recursion algorithms while two-body counterparts are done by direct numerical integration. A systematic analysis of our results obtained on various properties, such as component energy, total energy, ionization energy, potential energy curve, atomization energy, etc., clearly demonstrates that the method is capable of producing quite accurate and competitive (with those from other methods in the literature) results. In brief, a new variational DFT method is presented for atoms and molecules, \emph{completely} in Cartesian grid.

Studies on some singular potentials in quantum mechanics

A simple methodology is suggested for the efficient calculation of certain central potentials having singularities. The generalized pseudospectral method used in this work facilitates {\em nonuniform} and optimal spatial discretization. Applications have been made to calculate the energies, densities and expectation values for two singular potentials of physical interest, {\em viz.,} (i) the harmonic potential plus inverse quartic and sextic perturbation and (ii) the Coulomb potential with a linear and quadratic term for a broad range of parameters. The first 10 states belonging to a maximum of $\ell=8$ and 5 for (i) and (ii) have been computed with good accuracy and compared with the most accurate available literature data. The calculated results are in excellent agreement, especially in the light of the difficulties encountered in these potentials. Some new states are reported here for the first time. This offers a general and efficient scheme for calculating these and other similar potentials of physical and mathematical interest in quantum mechanics accurately.
