Regulators and derivatives of Vologodsky functions with respect to log(p)

We describe several instances of the following phenomenon: In bad reduction situations the \( p \)-adic regulator has a continuous and a discrete component. The continuous component is computed using Vologodsky integrals. These depend on a choice of the branch of the \( p \)-adic logarithm, determined by \( \log (p) \). They can be differentiated with respect to this parameter and the result is related to the discrete component.

p-adic adelic metrics and Quadratic Chabauty I

We give a new construction of $p$-adic heights on varieties over number fields using $p$-adic Arakelov theory. In analogy with Zhang's construction of real-valued heights in terms of adelic metrics, these heights are given in terms of $p$-adic adelic metrics on line bundles. In particular, we describe a construction of canonical $p$-adic heights on abelian varieties and we show that we recover the canonical Mazur--Tate height and, for Jacobians, the height constructed by Coleman and Gross. Our main application is a new and simplified approach to the Quadratic Chabauty method for the computation of rational points on certain curves over the rationals, by pulling back the canonical height on the Jacobian with respect to a carefully chosen line bundle. We show that our construction allows us to reprove, without using $p$-adic Hodge theory or arithmetic fundamental groups, several results due to Balakrishnan and Dogra. Our method also extends to primes $p$ of bad reduction. One consequence of our work is that for any canonical height ($p$-adic or $\mathbb{R}$-valued) on an abelian variety (and hence on pull-backs to other varieties), the local contribution at a finite prime $q$ can be constructed using $q$-analytic methods.

Explicit quadratic Chabauty over number fields

We generalize the explicit quadratic Chabauty techniques for integral points on odd degree hyperelliptic curves and for rational points on genus 2 bielliptic curves to arbitrary number fields using restriction of scalars. This is achieved by combining equations coming from Siksek's extension of classical Chabauty with equations defined in terms of p-adic heights attached to independent continuous idele class characters. We give several examples to show the practicality of our methods.

Toric regulators

Let $X$ be a variety defined over a local field $K$ of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ with a totally degenerate reduction in the sense of Raskind and Xarles. Generalizing earlier work of Raskind and Xarles and relying on some conjectures we define a map, which we call the toric regulator, from the various motivic cohomology groups of $X$ to certain $p$-adically uniformized tori over $K$. This construction captures the part of the étale regulators on $X$ that land in the Galois cohomology of the submodules of cohomology which are extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_l$ by $\mathbb{Z}_l(1)$, simultaneously for all $l$. We also discuss the relation with the log-syntomic regulator and study a number of examples. In particular, for $K_2$ of a Mumford curve we find a relation with the rigid analytic regulator of Pal and for $K_1$ of the product of Mumford curves we conjecture a formula for the toric regulator.

Vologodsky integration on curves with semi-stable reduction

We prove that the Vologodsky integral of a mermorphic one-form on a curve over a $p$-adic field with semi-stable reduction restrict to Coleman integrals on the rigid subdomains reducing to the components of the smooth part of the special fiber and that on the connecting annuli the differences of these Coleman integrals form a harmonic cochain on the edges of the dual graph of the special fiber. This determines the Vologodsky integral completely. We analyze the behavior of the integral on the connecting annuli and we explain the results in the case of a Tate elliptic curve.

p-adic heights and Vologodsky integration

We extend the result of a previous work to the case of curves with semi-stable reduction. In this case, one can replace Coleman integration by Vologodsky integration to extend the Coleman-Gross definition of a $p$-adic height pairing. we show that this pairing still equals the one defined by Nekovar.

Computing integral points on hyperelliptic curves using quadratic Chabauty

We give a method for the computation of integral points on a hyperelliptic curve of odd degree over the rationals whose genus equals the Mordell-Weil rank of its Jacobian. Our approach consists of a combination of the $p$-adic approximation techniques introduced in previous work with the Mordell-Weil sieve

Quadratic Chabauty: p-adic height pairings and integral points on hyperelliptic curves

We give a formula for the component at p of the p-adic height pairing of a divisor of degree 0 on a hyperelliptic curve. We use this to give a Chabauty-like method for finding p-adic approximations to p-integral points on such curves when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian equals the genus. In this case we get an explicit bound for the number of such p-integral points, and we are able to use the method in explicit computation. An important aspect of the method is that it only requires a basis of the Mordell-Weil group tensored with the rationals.

Finite polynomial cohomology for general varieties

Nekovar and Niziol have introduced in [arxiv:1309.7620] a version of syntomic cohomology valid for arbitrary varieties over p-adic fields. This uses a mapping cone construction similar to the rigid syntomic cohomology of the first author in the good-reduction case, but with Hyodo--Kato (log-crystalline) cohomology in place of rigid cohomology. In this short note, we describe a cohomology theory which is a modification of the theory of Nekovar and Niziol, modified by replacing 1 - Phi (where Phi is the Frobenius map) with other polynomials in Phi. This is the analogue for general varieties of the finite-polynomial cohomology defined by the first author for varieties with good reduction. We use this cohomology theory to give formulae for p-adic regulator maps on curves or products of curves, without imposing any good reduction hypotheses.

Frobenius lifts and point counting for smooth curves

We describe an algorithm to compute the zeta-function of a proper, smooth curve over a finite field, when the curve is given together with some auxiliary data. Our method is based on computing the matrix of the action of a semi-linear Frobenius on the first cohomology group of the curve by means of Serre duality. The cup product involved can be computed locally, after first computing local expansions of a globally defined lift of Frobenius. The resulting algorithm's complexity is softly cubic in the field degree, which is also the case with Kedlaya's algorithm in the hyperelliptic case.

The syntomic regulator for $K_4$ of curves

Let $C$ be a curve defined over a discrete valuation field of characteristic zero where the residue field has positive characteristic. Assuming that $C$ has good reduction over the residue field, we compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(C)$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration. We also compute the syntomic regulator on a certain part of $K_4^[(3)}(F)$ for the function field $F$ of $C$. The result can be expressed in terms of $p$-adic polylogarithms and Coleman integration, or by using a trilinear map ("triple index") on certain functions.

Coleman-Gross height pairings and the $p$-adic sigma function

We give a direct proof that the Mazur-Tate and Coleman-Gross heights on elliptic curves coincide. The main ingredient is to extend the Coleman-Gross height to the case of divisors with non-disjoint support and, doing some $p$-adic analysis, show that, in particular, its component above $p$ gives, in the special case of an ordinary elliptic curve, the $p$-adic sigma function. We use this result to give a short proof of a theorem of Kim characterizing integral points on elliptic curves in some cases under weaker assumptions. As a further application, we give new formulas to compute double Coleman integrals from tangential basepoints.

Picard-Fuchs equations of families of QM abelian surfaces

We describe an algorithm for computing the Picard-Fuchs equation for a family of twists of a fixed elliptic surface. We then apply this algorithm to obtain the equation for several examples, which are coming from families of Kummer surfaces over Shimura curves, as studied in our previous work. We use this to find correspondenced between the parameter spaces of our families and Shimura curves. These correspondences can sometimes be proved rigorously.

Computing local p-adic height pairings on hyperelliptic curves

We describe an algorithm to compute the local component at p of the Coleman-Gross p-adic height pairing on divisors on hyperelliptic curves. As the height pairing is given in terms of a Coleman integral, we also provide new techniques to evaluate Coleman integrals of meromorphic differentials and present our algorithms as implemented in Sage.

On the p-adic Beilinson conjecture for number fields

We formulate a conjectural p-adic analogue of Borel's theorem relating regulators for higher K-groups of number fields to special values of the corresponding zeta-functions, using syntomic regulators and p-adic L-functions. We also formulate a corresponding conjecture for Artin motives, and state a conjecture about the precise relation between the p-adic and classical situations. Parts of he conjectures are proved when the number field (or Artin motive) is Abelian over the rationals, and all conjectures are verified numerically in some other cases.

The double shuffle relations for p-adic multiple zeta values

We give a proof of double shuffle relations for $p$-adic multiple zeta values by developing higher dimensional version of tangential base points and discussing a relationship with two (and one) variable $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms.

A short proof of de Shalit's cup product formula

We give a short proof of a formula of de Shalit, expressing the cup product of two vector valued one forms of the second kind on a Mumford curve in terms of Coleman integrals and residues. The proof uses the notion of double indices on curves and their reciprocity laws.
