Local Statistics and Concentration for Non-intersecting Brownian Bridges With Smooth Boundary Data

In this paper we consider non-intersecting Brownian bridges, under fairly general upper and lower boundaries, and starting and ending data. Under the assumption that these boundary data induce a smooth limit shape (without empty facets), we establish two results. The first is a nearly optimal concentration bound for the Brownian bridges in this model. The second is that the bulk local statistics of these bridges along any fixed time converge to the sine process.

Mobility Edge for Lévy Matrices

Lévy matrices are symmetric random matrices whose entry distributions lie in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law. For $α< 1$, predictions from the physics literature suggest that high-dimensional Lévy matrices should display the following phase transition at a point $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$. Eigenvectors corresponding to eigenvalues in $(-E_{\mathrm{mob}},E_{\mathrm{mob}})$ should be delocalized, while eigenvectors corresponding to eigenvalues outside of this interval should be localized. Further, $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ is given by the (presumably unique) positive solution to $λ(E,α) =1$, where $λ$ is an explicit function of $E$ and $α$. We prove the following results about high-dimensional Lévy matrices. (1) If $λ(E,α) > 1$ then eigenvectors with eigenvalues near $E$ are delocalized. (2) If $E$ is in the connected components of the set $\big\{ x : λ(x,α) < 1 \big\}$ containing $\pm \infty$, then eigenvectors with eigenvalues near $E$ are localized. (3) For $α$ sufficiently near $0$ or $1$, there is a unique positive solution $E = E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ to $λ(E,α) = 1$, demonstrating the existence of a (unique) phase transition. (a) If $α$ is close to $0$, then $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ scales approximately as $|\log α|^{-2/α}$. (b) If $α$ is close to $1$, then $E_{\mathrm{mob}}$ scales as $(1-α)^{-1}$. Our proofs proceed through an analysis of the local weak limit of a Lévy matrix, given by a certain infinite-dimensional, heavy-tailed operator on the Poisson weighted infinite tree.

Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings

Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

Optimal-Degree Polynomial Approximations for Exponentials and Gaussian Kernel Density Estimation

For any real numbers $B \ge 1$ and $δ\in (0, 1)$ and function $f: [0, B] \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, let $d_{B; δ} (f) \in \mathbb{Z}_{> 0}$ denote the minimum degree of a polynomial $p(x)$ satisfying $\sup_{x \in [0, B]} \big| p(x) - f(x) \big| < δ$. In this paper, we provide precise asymptotics for $d_{B; δ} (e^{-x})$ and $d_{B; δ} (e^{x})$ in terms of both $B$ and $δ$, improving both the previously known upper bounds and lower bounds. In particular, we show $$d_{B; δ} (e^{-x}) = Θ\left( \max \left\{ \sqrt{B \log(δ^{-1})}, \frac{\log(δ^{-1}) }{ \log(B^{-1} \log(δ^{-1}))} \right\}\right), \text{ and}$$ $$d_{B; δ} (e^{x}) = Θ\left( \max \left\{ B, \frac{\log(δ^{-1}) }{ \log(B^{-1} \log(δ^{-1}))} \right\}\right).$$ Polynomial approximations for $e^{-x}$ and $e^x$ have applications to the design of algorithms for many problems, and our degree bounds show both the power and limitations of these algorithms. We focus in particular on the Batch Gaussian Kernel Density Estimation problem for $n$ sample points in $Θ(\log n)$ dimensions with error $δ= n^{-Θ(1)}$. We show that the running time one can achieve depends on the square of the diameter of the point set, $B$, with a transition at $B = Θ(\log n)$ mirroring the corresponding transition in $d_{B; δ} (e^{-x})$: - When $B=o(\log n)$, we give the first algorithm running in time $n^{1 + o(1)}$. - When $B = κ\log n$ for a small constant $κ>0$, we give an algorithm running in time $n^{1 + O(\log \log κ^{-1} /\log κ^{-1})}$. The $\log \log κ^{-1} /\log κ^{-1}$ term in the exponent comes from analyzing the behavior of the leading constant in our computation of $d_{B; δ} (e^{-x})$. - When $B = ω(\log n)$, we show that time $n^{2 - o(1)}$ is necessary assuming SETH.

The ASEP speed process

For ASEP with step initial data and a second class particle started at the origin we prove that as time goes to infinity the second class particle almost surely achieves a velocity that is uniformly distributed on $[-1,1]$. This positively resolves Conjecture 1.9 and 1.10 of [Amir, Angel and Valko, "The TASEP speed process", Annals of Probability 39, 1205--1242, 2011] and allows us to construct the ASEP speed process.

Arctic Boundaries of the Ice Model on Three-Bundle Domains

In this paper we consider the six-vertex model at ice point on an arbitrary three-bundle domain, which is a generalization of the domain-wall ice model on the square (or, equivalently, of a uniformly random alternating sign matrix). We show that this model exhibits the arctic boundary phenomenon, whose boundary is given by a union of explicit algebraic curves. This was originally predicted by Colomo-Sportiello in 2016 as one of the initial applications of a general heuristic that they introduced for locating arctic boundaries, called the (geometric) tangent method. Our proof uses a probabilistic analysis of non-crossing directed path ensembles to provide a mathematical justification of their tangent method heuristic in this case, which might be of independent interest.

Deformed Polynuclear Growth in $(1+1)$ Dimensions

We introduce and study a one parameter deformation of the polynuclear growth (PNG) in $(1+1)$-dimensions, which we call the $t$-PNG model. It is defined by requiring that, when two expanding islands merge, with probability $t$ they sprout another island on top of the merging location. At $t=0$, this becomes the standard (non-deformed) PNG model that, in the droplet geometry, can be reformulated through longest increasing subsequences of uniformly random permutations or through an algorithm known as patience sorting. In terms of the latter, the $t$-PNG model allows errors to occur in the sorting algorithm with probability $t$. We prove that the $t$-PNG model exhibits one-point Tracy-Widom GUE asymptotics at large times for any fixed $t\in [0,1)$, and one-point convergence to the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation as $t$ tends to $1$. We further construct distributions for an external source that are likely to induce Baik-Ben Arous-Peche type phase transitions. The proofs are based on solvable stochastic vertex models and their connection to the determinantal point processes arising from Schur measures on partitions.

Gaussian Unitary Ensemble in random lozenge tilings

This paper establishes a universality result for scaling limits of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large domains. We prove that whenever a boundary of the domain has three adjacent straight segments inclined under 120 degrees to each other, the asymptotics of tilings near the middle segment is described by the GUE--corners process of random matrix theory. An important step in our argument is to show that fluctuations of the height function of random tilings on essentially arbitrary simply-connected domains of diameter $N$ have smaller magnitude than $N^{1/2}$.

Colored Fermionic Vertex Models and Symmetric Functions

In this text we introduce and analyze families of symmetric functions arising as partition functions for colored fermionic vertex models associated with the quantized affine Lie superalgebra $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$. We establish various combinatorial results for these vertex models and symmetric functions, which include the following. (1) We apply the fusion procedure to the fundamental $R$-matrix for $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$ to obtain an explicit family of vertex weights satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. (2) We define families of symmetric functions as partition functions for colored, fermionic vertex models under these fused weights. We further establish several combinatorial properties for these symmetric functions, such as branching rules and Cauchy identities. (3) We show that the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon (LLT) polynomials arise as special cases of these symmetric functions. This enables us to show both old and new properties about the LLT polynomials, including Cauchy identities, contour integral formulas, stability properties, and branching rules under a certain family of plethystic transformations. (4) A different special case of our symmetric functions gives rise to a new family of polynomials called factorial LLT polynomials. We show they generalize the LLT polynomials, while also satisfying a vanishing condition reminiscent of that satisfied by the factorial Schur functions. (5) By considering our vertex model on a cylinder, we obtain fermionic partition function formulas for both the symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. (6) We prove combinatorial formulas for the coefficients of the LLT polynomials when expanded in the modified Hall-Littlewood basis, as partition functions for a $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (2 | n) \big)$ vertex model.

Eigenvector Statistics of Lévy Matrices

We analyze statistics for eigenvector entries of heavy-tailed random symmetric matrices (also called Lévy matrices) whose associated eigenvalues are sufficiently small. We show that the limiting law of any such entry is non-Gaussian, given by the product of a normal distribution with another random variable that depends on the location of the corresponding eigenvalue. Although the latter random variable is typically non-explicit, for the median eigenvector it is given by the inverse of a one-sided stable law. Moreover, we show that different entries of the same eigenvector are asymptotically independent, but that there are nontrivial correlations between eigenvectors with nearby eigenvalues. Our findings contrast sharply with the known eigenvector behavior for Wigner matrices and sparse random graphs.

Nonexistence and Uniqueness for Pure States of Ferroelectric Six-Vertex Models

In this paper we consider the existence and uniqueness of pure states with some fixed slope $(s, t) \in [0, 1]^2$ for a general ferroelectric six-vertex model. First, we show there is an open subset $\mathfrak{H} \subset [0, 1]^2$, which is parameterized by the region between two explicit hyperbolas, such that there is no pure state for the ferroelectric six-vertex model of any slope $(s, t) \in \mathfrak{H}$. Second, we show that there is a unique pure state for this model of any slope $(s, t)$ on the boundary $\partial \mathfrak{H}$ of $\mathfrak{H}$. These results confirm predictions of Bukman-Shore from 1995.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Intersection Numbers and Principal Strata Volumes of Quadratic Differentials

In this paper we analyze the large genus asymptotics for intersection numbers between $ψ$-classes, also called correlators, on the moduli space of stable curves. Our proofs proceed through a combinatorial analysis of the recursive relations (Virasoro constraints) that uniquely determine these correlators, together with a comparison between the coefficients in these relations with the jump probabilities of a certain asymmetric simple random walk. As an application of this result, we provide the large genus limits for Masur-Veech volumes and area Siegel-Veech constants associated with principal strata in the moduli space of quadratic differentials. These confirm predictions of Delecroix-Goujard-Zograf-Zorich from 2019.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Volumes of Strata of Abelian Differentials

In this paper we consider the large genus asymptotics for Masur-Veech volumes of arbitrary strata of Abelian differentials. Through a combinatorial analysis of an algorithm proposed in 2002 by Eskin-Okounkov to exactly evaluate these quantities, we show that the volume $ν_1 \big( \mathcal{H}_1 (m) \big)$ of a stratum indexed by a partition $m = (m_1, m_2, \ldots , m_n)$ is $\big( 4 + o(1) \big) \prod_{i = 1}^n (m_i + 1)^{-1}$ as $2g - 2 = \sum_{i = 1}^n m_i$ tends to $\infty$. This confirms a prediction of Eskin-Zorich and generalizes some of the recent results of Chen-Moeller-Zagier and Sauvaget, who established these limiting statements in the special cases $m = 1^{2g - 2}$ and $m = (2g - 2)$, respectively. We also include an Appendix by Anton Zorich that uses our main result to deduce the large genus asymptotics for Siegel-Veech constants that count certain types of saddle connections.

Large Genus Asymptotics for Siegel-Veech Constants

In this paper we consider the large genus asymptotics for two classes of Siegel-Veech constants associated with an arbitrary connected stratum $\mathcal{H} (α)$ of Abelian differentials. The first is the saddle connection Siegel-Veech constant $c_{\text{sc}}^{m_i, m_j} \big( \mathcal{H} (α) \big)$ counting saddle connections between two distinct, fixed zeros of prescribed orders $m_i$ and $m_j$, and the second is the area Siegel-Veech constant $c_{\text{area}} \big( \mathcal{H}(α) \big)$ counting maximal cylinders weighted by area. By combining a combinatorial analysis of explicit formulas of Eskin-Masur-Zorich that express these constants in terms of Masur-Veech strata volumes, with a recent result for the large genus asymptotics of these volumes, we show that $c_{\text{sc}}^{m_i, m_j} \big( \mathcal{H} (α) \big) = (m_i + 1) (m_j + 1) \big( 1 + o(1) \big)$ and $c_{\text{area}} \big( \mathcal{H}(α) \big) = \frac{1}{2} + o(1)$, both as $|α| = 2g - 2$ tends to $\infty$. The former result confirms a prediction of Zorich and the latter confirms one of Eskin-Zorich in the case of connected strata.

Limit Shapes and Local Statistics for the Stochastic Six-Vertex Model

In this paper we consider the stochastic six-vertex model on a cylinder with arbitrary initial data. First, we show that it exhibits a limit shape in the thermodynamic limit, whose density profile is given by the entropy solution to an explicit, non-linear conservation law that was predicted by Gwa-Spohn in 1992 and by Reshetikhin-Sridhar in 2018. Then, we show that the local statistics of this model around any continuity point of its limit shape are given by an infinite-volume, translation-invariant Gibbs measure of the appropriate slope.

GOE Statistics for Levy Matrices

In this paper we establish eigenvector delocalization and bulk universality for Lévy matrices, which are real, symmetric, $N \times N$ random matrices $\textbf{H}$ whose upper triangular entries are independent, identically distributed $α$-stable laws. First, if $α\in (1, 2)$ and $E \in \mathbb{R}$ is any energy bounded away from $0$, we show that every eigenvector of $\textbf{H}$ corresponding to an eigenvalue near $E$ is completely delocalized and that the local spectral statistics of $\textbf{H}$ around $E$ converge to those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) as $N$ tends to $\infty$. Second, we show for almost all $α\in (0, 2)$, there exists a constant $c(α) > 0$ such that the same statements hold if $|E| < c (α)$.

Stochasticization of Solutions to the Yang-Baxter Equation

In this paper we introduce a procedure that, given a solution to the Yang-Baxter equation as input, produces a stochastic (or Markovian) solution to (a possibly dynamical version of) the Yang-Baxter equation. We then apply this "stochasticization procedure" to obtain three new, stochastic solutions to several different forms of the Yang-Baxter equation. The first is a stochastic, elliptic solution to the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation; the second is a stochastic, higher rank solution to the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation; and the third is a stochastic solution to a dynamical variant of the tetrahedron equation.
