Quantitative ergodic theorems and their number-theoretic applications

We present a survey of ergodic theorems for actions of algebraic and arithmetic groups recently established by the authors, as well as some of their applications. Our approach is based on spectral methods employing the unitary representation theory of the groups involved. This allows the derivation of ergodic theorems with a rate of convergence, an important phenomenon which does not arise in classical ergodic theory. Quantitative ergodic theorems give rise to new and previously inaccessible applications, and we demonstrate the remarkable diversity of such applications by presenting several number-theoretic results. These include, in particular, general uniform error estimates in lattice points counting problems, explicit estimates in sifting problems for almost-prime points on symmetric varieties, bounds for exponents of intrinsic Diophantine approximation, and results on fast distribution of dense orbits on homogeneous spaces.

Amenable equivalence relations and the construction of ergodic averages for group actions

We present a general new method for constructing pointwise ergodic sequences on countable groups, which is applicable to amenable as well as to non-amenable groups and treats both cases on an equal footing. The principle underlying the method is that both cases can be viewed as instances of the general ergodic theory of amenable equivalence relations.

von-Neumann and Birkhoff ergodic theorems for negatively curved groups

We prove maximal inequalities for concentric ball and spherical shell averages on a general Gromov hyperbolic group, in arbitrary probability preserving actions of the group. Under an additional condition, satisfied for example by all groups acting isometrically and properly discontinuously on CAT(-1) spaces, we prove a pointwise ergodic theorem with respect to a sequence of probability measures supported on concentric spherical shells.

A horospherical ratio ergodic theorem for actions of free groups

We prove a ratio ergodic theorem for amenable equivalence relations satisfying a strong form of the Besicovich covering property. We then use this result to study general non-singular actions of non-abelian free groups and establish a ratio ergodic theorem for averages along horospheres.

Ergodic theory and the duality principle on homogeneous spaces

We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for the action of a discrete lattice subgroup in a connected algebraic Lie group, on infinite volume homogeneous algebraic varieties. Under suitable necessary conditions, our results are quantitative, namely we establish rates of convergence in the mean and pointwise ergodic theorems, which can be estimated explicitly. Our results give a precise and in most cases optimal quantitative form to the duality principle governing dynamics on homogeneous spaces. We illustrate their scope in a variety of equidistribution problems.

Metric Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties

We develop the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups and prove results analogous to the classical Khinchin and Jarnik theorems. In full generality our results establish simultaneous Diophantine approximation with respect to several completions, and Diophantine approximation over general number fields using S-algebraic integers. In several important examples, the metric results we obtain are optimal. The proof uses quantitative equidistribution properties of suitable averaging operators, which are derived from spectral bounds in automorphic representations.

Pointwise ergodic theorems beyond amenable groups

We prove pointwise and maximal ergodic theorems for probability measure preserving (p.m.p.) actions of any countable group, provided it admits an essentially free, weakly mixing amenable action of stable type $III_1$. We show that this class contains all irreducible lattices in connected semisimple Lie groups without compact factors. We also establish similar results when the stable type is $III_λ$, $0 < λ< 1$, under a suitable hypothesis. Our approach is based on the following two principles. First, we show that it is possible to generalize the ergodic theory of p.m.p. actions of amenable groups to include p.m.p. amenable equivalence relations. Second, we show that it is possible to reduce the proof of ergodic theorems for p.m.p. actions of a general group to the proof of ergodic theorems in an associated p.m.p. amenable equivalence relation, provided the group admits an amenable action with the properties stated above.

The Poisson boundary of CAT(0) cube complex groups

We consider a finite-dimensional, locally finite CAT(0) cube complex X admitting a co-compact properly discontinuous countable group of automorphisms G. We construct a natural compact metric space B(X) on which G acts by homeomorphisms, the action being minimal and strongly proximal. Furthermore, for any generating probability measure on G, B(X) admits a unique stationary measure, and when the measure has finite logarithmic moment, it constitutes a compact metric model of the Poisson boundary. We identify a dense G-delta subset of B(X) on which the action of G is Borel-amenable, and describe the relation of these two spaces to the Roller boundary. Our construction can be used to give a simple geometric proof of Property A for the complex. Our methods are based on direct geometric arguments regarding the asymptotic behavior of half-spaces and their limiting ultrafilters, which are of considerable independent interest. In particular we analyze the notions of median and interval in the complex, and use the latter in the proof that B(X) is the Poisson boundary via the strip criterion developed by V. Kaimanovich.

Splitting fields of elements in arithmetic groups

We prove that the number of unimodular integral matrices in a norm ball whose characteristic polynomial has Galois group different than the full symmetric group is of strictly lower order of magnitude than the number of all such matrices in the ball, as the radius increases. More generally, we prove a similar result for the Galois groups associated with elements in any connected semisimple linear algebraic group defined and simple over a number field $F$. Our method is based on the abstract large sieve method developed by Kowalski, and the study of Galois groups via reductions modulo primes developed by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina. The two key ingredients are a uniform quantitative lattice point counting result, and a non-concentration phenomenon for lattice points in algebraic subvarieties of the group variety, both established previously by the authors. The results answer a question posed by Rivin and by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina, who have considered Galois groups of random products of elements in algebraic groups.

Lifting, restricting and sifting integral points on affine homogeneous varieties

In a previous paper {GN2} an effective solution of the lattice point counting problem in general domains in semisimple S-algebraic groups and affine symmetric varieties was established. The method relies on the mean ergodic theorem for the action of G on G/Gamma, and implies uniformity in counting over families of lattice subgroups admitting a uniform spectral gap. In the present paper we extend some methods developed in {NS} and use them to establish several useful consequences of this property, including : Effective upper bounds on lifting for solutions of congruences in affine homogeneous varieties, effective upper bounds on the number of integral points on general subvarieties of semisimple group varieties, effective lower bounds on the number of almost prime points on symmetric varieties, and effective upper bounds on almost prime solutions of Linnik-type congruence problems in homogeneous varieties.

On Arnold's and Kazhdan's equidistribution problems

We consider isometric actions of lattices in semisimple algebraic groups on (possibly non-compact) homogeneous spaces with (possibly infinite) invariant Radon measure. We assume that the action has a dense orbit, and demonstrate two novel and non-classical dynamical phenomena that arise in this context. The first is the existence of a mean ergodic theorem even when the invariant measure is infinite, which implies the existence of an associated limiting distribution, possibly different than the invariant measure. The second is uniform quantitative equidistribution of all orbits in the space, which follows from a quantitative mean ergodic theorem for such actions. In turn, these results imply quantitative ratio ergodic theorems for isometric actions of lattices. This sheds some unexpected light on certain equidistribution problems posed by Arnol'd and also on the equidistribution conjecture for dense subgroups of isometries formulated by Kazhdan. We briefly describe the general problem regarding ergodic theorems for actions of lattices on homogeneous spaces and its solution via the duality principle \cite{GN2}, and give a number of examples to demonstrate our results. Finally, we also prove results on quantitative equidistribution for transitive actions.

Geometric covering arguments and ergodic theorems for free groups

We present a new approach to the proof of ergodic theorems for actions of free groups based on geometric covering and asymptotic invariance arguments. Our approach can be viewed as a direct generalization of the classical geometric covering and asymptotic invariance arguments used in the ergodic theory of amenable groups. We use this approach to generalize the existing maximal and pointwise ergodic theorems for free group actions to a large class of geometric averages which were not accessible by previous techniques. Some applications of our approach to other groups and other problems in ergodic theory are also briefly discussed.

Diophantine approximation and automorphic spectrum

The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.

Counting lattice points

For a locally compact second countable group G and a lattice subgroup Gamma, we give an explicit quantitative solution of the lattice point counting problem in general domains in G, provided that i) G has finite upper local dimension, and the domains satisfy a basic regularity condition, ii) the mean ergodic theorem for the action of G on G/Gamma holds, with a rate of convergence. The error term we establish matches the best current result for balls in symmetric spaces of simple higher-rank Lie groups, but holds in much greater generality. In addition, it holds uniformly over families of lattices satisfying a uniform spectral gap. Applications include counting lattice points in general domains in semisimple S-algebraic groups, counting rational points on group varieties with respect to a height function, and quantitative angular (or conical) equidistribution of lattice points in symmetric spaces and in affine symmetric varieties. The mean ergodic theorems which we establish are based on spectral methods, including the spectral transfer principle and the Kunze-Stein phenomenon. We prove appropriate analogues of both of these results in the set-up of adele groups, and they constitute a necessary step in our proof of quantitative results in counting rational points.

Prime and almost prime integral points on principal homogeneous spaces

We develop the affine sieve in the context of orbits of congruence subgroups of semi-simple groups acting linearly on affine space. In particular we give effective bounds for the saturation numbers for points on such orbits at which the value of a given polynomial has few prime factors. In many cases these bounds are of the same quality as what is known in the classical case of a polynomial in one variable and the orbit is the integers. When the orbit is the set of integral matrices of a fixed determinant we obtain a sharp result for the saturation number, and thus establish the Zariski density of matrices all of whose entries are prime numbers. Among the key tools used are explicit approximations to the generalized Ramanujan conjectures for such groups and sharp and uniform counting of points on such orbits when ordered by various norms.

Invariant rigid geometric structures and smooth projective factors

We consider actions of non-compact simple Lie groups preserving an analytic rigid geometric structure of algebraic type on a compact manifold. The structure is not assumed to be unimodular, so an invariant measure may not exist. Ergodic stationary measures always exist, and when such a measure has full support, we show the following. 1) Either the manifold admits a smooth equivariant map onto a homogeneous projective variety, defined on an open dense conull invariant set, or the Lie algebra of the Zariski closure of the Gromov representation of the fundamental group contains a Lie subalgebra isomorphic to the Lie algebra of the acting group. As a corollary, a smooth non-trivial homogeneous projective factor does exist whenever the fundamental group of $M$ admits only virtually solvable linear representations, and thus in particular when $M$ is simply connected, regardless of the real rank. 2) There exist explicit examples showing that analytic rigid actions of certain simple groups (of real rank one) may indeed fail to have a smooth projective factor. 3) It is possible to generalize Gromov's theorem on the algebraic hull of the representation of the fundamental group of the manifold to the case of analytic rigid non-unimodular structures, for actions of simple groups of any real rank. An important ingredient in the proofs is a generalization of Gromov's centralizer theorem beyond the case of invariant measures.

The ergodic theory of lattice subgroups

We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for general families of averages on a semisimple algebraic (or S-algebraic) group G, together with an explicit rate of convergence when the action has a spectral gap. Given any lattice in G, we use the ergodic theorems for G to solve the lattice point counting problem for general domains in G, and prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for arbitrary measure-preserving actions of the lattice, together with explicit rates of convergence when a spectral gap is present. We also prove an equidistribution theorem in arbitrary isometric actions of the lattice. For the proof we develop a general method to derive ergodic theorems for actions of a locally compact group G, and of a lattice subgroup Gamma, provided certain natural spectral, geometric and regularity conditions are satisfied by the group G, the lattice Gamma, and the domains where the averages are supported. In particular, we establish the general principle that under these conditions a quantitative mean ergodic theorem for a family of averages gives rise to a quantitative solution of the lattice point counting problem in their supports. We demonstrate the new explicit error terms that we obtain by a variety of examples.

Pointwise ergodic theorems for actions of groups

The survey presents the main developments obtained over the last decade regarding pointwise ergodic theorems for measure preserving actions of locally compact groups. The survey includes an exposition of the solutions to a number of long standing open problems in ergodic theory, some of which are very recent and have not yet appeared elsewhere.
