Gauge gravity duality for d-wave superconductors: prospects and challenges

We write down an action for a charged, massive spin two field in a fixed Einstein background. Despite some technical problems, we argue that in an effective field theory framework and in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, this action can be used to study the properties of a superfluid phase transition with a d-wave order parameter in a dual strongly interacting field theory. We investigate the phase diagram and the charge conductivity of the superfluid phase. We also explain how possible couplings between the spin two field and bulk fermions affect the fermion spectral function.

Holographic Fermi arcs and a d-wave gap

We study fermion correlators in a holographic superfluid with a d-wave (spin two) order parameter. We find that, with a suitable bulk Majorana coupling, the Fermi surface is anisotropically gapped. At low temperatures the gap shrinks to four nodal points. At high temperatures the Fermi surface is partially gapped generating four Fermi arcs.

Fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors

We consider fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors. The spectral function of the fermions exhibits several interesting features such as support in displaced Dirac cones and an asymmetric distribution of normal modes. These features are compared to similar ones observed in angle resolved photoemission experiments on high T_c superconductors. Along the way we elucidate some properties of p-wave superconductors in AdS_4 and discuss the construction of SO(4) superconductors.

Notes on the bulk viscosity of holographic gauge theory plasmas

A novel technique is used to compute the bulk viscosity of high temperature holographic gauge theory plasmas with softly broken conformal symmetry. Working in a black hole background which corresponds to a non-trivial solution to the Navier-Stokes equation, and using a Ward identity for the trace of the stress-energy tensor, it is possible to obtain an analytic expression for the bulk viscosity. This can be used to verify the high temperature limit of a conjectured bound on the bulk viscosity for these theories. The bound is saturated when the conformal symmetry-breaking operator becomes marginal.

Pointlike probes of superstring-theoretic superfluids

In analogy with an experimental setup used in liquid helium, we use a pointlike probe to study superfluids which have a gravity dual. In the gravity description, the probe is represented by a hanging string. We demonstrate that there is a critical velocity below which the probe particle feels neither drag nor stochastic forces. Above this critical velocity, there is power-law scaling for the drag force, and the stochastic forces are characterized by a finite, velocity-dependent temperature. This temperature participates in two simple and general relations between the drag force and stochastic forces. The formula we derive for the critical velocity indicates that the low-energy excitations are massless, and they demonstrate the power of stringy methods in describing strongly coupled superfluids.

Sound modes in holographic superfluids

Superfluids support many different types of sound waves. We investigate the relation between the sound waves in a relativistic and a non-relativistic superfluid by using hydrodynamics to calculate the various sound speeds. Then, using a particular holographic scalar gravity realization of a strongly interacting superfluid, we compute first, second and fourth sound speeds as a function of the temperature. The relativistic low temperature results for second sound differ from Landau's well known prediction for the non-relativistic, incompressible case.

Fourth sound of holographic superfluids

We compute fourth sound for superfluids dual to a charged scalar and a gauge field in an AdS_4 background. For holographic superfluids with condensates that have a large scaling dimension (greater than approximately two), we find that fourth sound approaches first sound at low temperatures. For condensates that a have a small scaling dimension it exhibits non-conformal behavior at low temperatures which may be tied to the non-conformal behavior of the order parameter of the superfluid. We show that by introducing an appropriate scalar potential, conformal invariance can be enforced at low temperatures.

Off-center collisions in AdS_5 with applications to multiplicity estimates in heavy-ion collisions

We study the trapped surface produced by an off-center collision of light-like, point-sourced shock waves in anti-de Sitter space. We find an analytic expression for the shape of the trapped surface in the limit where the energy of the shock waves is large and the impact parameter is not too large. We use the area of the trapped surface to estimate a lower bound on the entropy produced in the collision. We compare our results to particle multiplicity measurements in heavy-ion collisions as interpreted through the Glauber model. In an attempt to roughly simulate the effects of asymptotic freedom and confinement in quantum chromodynamics, we also consider the effects of slicing off parts of anti-de Sitter space.

Energy loss in a strongly coupled thermal medium and the gauge-string duality

We review methods developed in the gauge-string duality to treat energy loss by energetic probes of a strongly coupled thermal medium. After introducing the black hole description of the thermal medium, we discuss the trailing string behind a heavy quark and the drag force that it implies. We then explain how to solve the linearized Einstein equations in the presence of the trailing string and extract from the solutions the energy density and the Poynting vector of the dual gauge theory. We summarize some efforts to compare these calculations to heavy ion phenomenology.

Nonlinear viscous hydrodynamics in various dimensions using AdS/CFT

We compute coefficients of two-derivative terms in the hydrodynamic energy momentum tensor of a viscous fluid which has an AdS_D dual with D between 3 and 7. For the case of D=3 we obtain an exact AdS_3 black hole solution, valid to all orders in a derivative expansion, dual to a perfect fluid in 1+1 dimensions.

Entanglement Induced Fluctuations of Cold Bosons

We show that due to entanglement, quantum fluctuations may differ significantly from statistical fluctuations. We calculate quantum fluctuations of the particle number and of the energy in a sub-volume of a system of bosons in a pure state, and briefly discuss the possibility of measuring them. We find that energy fluctuations have a non-extensive nature.

Entropy production in collisions of gravitational shock waves and of heavy ions

We calculate the area of a marginally trapped surface formed by a head-on collision of gravitational shock waves in AdS_D. We use this to obtain a lower bound on the entropy produced after the collision. A comparison to entropy production in heavy ion collisions is included. We also discuss an O(D-2) remnant of conformal symmetry which is present in a class of gravitational shock wave collisions in AdS_D and which might be approximately realized (with D=5) in central heavy-ion collisions.

Linearized hydrodynamics from probe-sources in the gauge-string duality

We study the response of an infinite, asymptotically static N=4 plasma to a generic localized source in the probe approximation. At large distances, the energy momentum tensor of the plasma includes a term which satisfies the constitutive relations of linearized hydrodynamics, but it can also include a non-hydrodynamical term which contributes at the same order as viscous corrections, or even at leading order in some cases. The conditions for the appearance of a laminar wake far behind the source and its relevance for phenomenological models used to explain di-hadron correlations are discussed. We also consider the energy momentum tensor near the source, where the hydrodynamical approximation can be expected to break down. Our analysis encompasses a wide range of sources which are localized in the bulk of AdS, including trailing strings, mesonic and baryonic configurations of strings, and point particles.

Shock waves from heavy-quark mesons in AdS/CFT

We calculate the far-field stress-energy tensor of a quark gluon plasma due to a heavy-quark meson moving through it, using a semi-classical description in string theory of the meson as a string hanging into anti-de Sitter space. We find that these mesons create a shock wave but no diffusion wake, in contrast to single heavy quarks described via a trailing string, where the diffusion wake is strong. If thermal QCD responds similarly to heavy quarks and heavy quarkonia, the presence or suppression of the diffusion wake constitutes a prediction which can in principle be checked in heavy-ion collisions.

Universality of the diffusion wake in the gauge-string duality

As a particle moves through a fluid, it may generate a laminar wake behind it. In the gauge-string duality, we show that such a diffusion wake is created by a heavy quark moving through a thermal plasma and that it has a universal strength when compared to the total drag force exerted on the quark by the plasma. The universality extends over all asymptotically anti-de Sitter supergravity constructions with arbitrary scalar matter. We discuss how these results relate to the linearized hydrodynamic approximation and how they bear on our understanding of di-hadron correlators in heavy ion collisions.

Energy disturbances due to a moving quark from gauge-string duality

Using AdS/CFT, we calculate the energy density of a quark moving through a thermal state of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. Relying on previous work for momentum-space representations as well as asymptotic behaviors, we Fourier transform to position space and exhibit a sonic boom at a speed larger than the speed of sound. Nontrivial structure is found at small length scales, confirming earlier analytical work by the authors.
