Dimensional Control of the Coherence Time of Scattered Light in Cold Atom Clouds

Cold atomic clouds are promising platforms for generating correlated photons, but multiple scattering and associated Doppler broadening limit their temporal coherence. Here we demonstrate that cloud geometry provides a powerful means to extend the coherence time of scattered light. In the experiment, intensity-correlation measurements show that an elongated (quasi-1D) cloud exhibits systematically longer coherence times than a spherical (3D) cloud of the same on-axis optical thickness, as a direct consequence of the suppression of multiple scattering in the elongated geometry. Random-walk simulations reproduce this trend and further show that elongation drives the coherence time toward the single-scattering limit. The combined results establish cloud geometry as a robust control parameter for temporal coherence in cold-atom ensembles, with potential applications in quantum optics and communication.

Photonic bands and normal mode splitting in optical lattices interacting with cavities

Strong collective interaction of atoms with an optical cavity causes normal mode splitting of the cavity's resonances, whose width is given by the collective coupling strength. At low optical density of the atomic cloud the intensity distribution of light in the cavity is ruled by the cavity's mode function, which is solely determined by its geometry. In this regime the dynamics of the coupled atom-cavity system is conveniently described by the open Dicke model, which we apply to calculating normal mode splitting generated by periodically ordered clouds in linear and ring cavities. We also show how to use normal mode splitting as witness for Wannier-Bloch oscillations in the tight-binding limit. At high optical density the atomic distribution contributes to shaping the mode function. This regime escapes the open Dicke model, but can be treated by a transfer matrix model provided the saturation parameter is low. Applying this latter model to an atomic cloud periodically ordered into a one-dimensional lattice, we observe the formation of photonic bands gaps competing with the normal mode splitting. We discuss the limitations of both models and point out possible pathways to generalized theories.

Van der Waals dephasing for Dicke subradiance in cold atomic clouds

We investigate numerically the role of near-field dipole-dipole interactions on the late emission dynamics of large disordered cold atomic samples driven by a weak field. Previous experimental and numerical studies of subradiance in macroscopic samples have focused on low-density samples of pure two-level atoms, without internal structure, which corresponds to a scalar representation of the light. The cooperative nature of the late emission of light is then governed by the resonant optical depth. Here, by considering the vectorial nature of the light, we show the detrimental role of the near-field terms on cooperativity in higher-density samples. The observed reduction in the subradiant lifetimes is interpreted as a signature of the inhomogeneous broadening due to the near-field contributions, in analogy with the Van der Waals dephasing phenomenon for superradiance.

Intensity fluctuations signature of 3D Anderson localization of light

Apart from the difficulty of producing highly scattering samples, a major challenge in the observation of Anderson localization of 3D light is identifying an unambiguous signature of the phase transition in experimentally feasible situations. In this letter we establish a clear correspondence between the collapse of the conductance, the increase in intensity fluctuations at the localization transition and the scaling analysis results based on the Thouless number, thus connecting the macroscopic and microscopic approaches of localization. Furthermore, the transition thus inferred is fully compatible both with the results based on the eigenvalue analysis of the microscopic description and with the effective-medium Ioffe-Regel criterion.
