Function spaces, time derivatives and compactness for evolving families of Banach spaces with applications to PDEs

We develop a functional framework suitable for the treatment of partial differential equations and variational problems on evolving families of Banach spaces. We propose a definition for the weak time derivative that does not rely on the availability of a Hilbertian structure and explore conditions under which spaces of weakly differentiable functions (with values in an evolving Banach space) relate to classical Sobolev--Bochner spaces. An Aubin--Lions compactness result is proved. We analyse concrete examples of function spaces over time-evolving spatial domains and hypersurfaces for which we explicitly provide the definition of the time derivative and verify isomorphism properties with the aforementioned Sobolev--Bochner spaces. We conclude with the proof of well posedness for a class of nonlinear monotone problems on an abstract evolving space (generalising the evolutionary $p$-Laplace equation on a moving domain or surface) and identify some additional problems that can be formulated with the setting developed in this work.

Weak error analysis for a nonlinear SPDE approximation of the Dean-Kawasaki equation

We consider a nonlinear SPDE approximation of the Dean-Kawasaki equation for independent particles. Our approximation satisfies the physical constraints of the particle system, i.e. its solution is a probability measure for all times (preservation of positivity and mass conservation). Using a duality argument, we prove that the weak error between particle system and nonlinear SPDE is of the order $N^{-1-1/(d/2+1)}\log (N)$. Along the way we show well-posedness, a comparison principle and an entropy estimate for a class of nonlinear regularized Dean-Kawasaki equations with Itô noise. Keywords: Dean-Kawasaki equation, weak error analysis, Laplace duality

Synchronisation for scalar conservation laws via Dirichlet boundary

We provide an elementary proof of geometric synchronisation for scalar conservation laws on a domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Unlike previous results, our proof does not rely on a strict maximum principle, and builds instead on a quantitative estimate of the dissipation at the boundary. We identify a coercivity condition under which the estimates are uniform over all initial conditions, via the construction of suitable super- and sub-solutions. In lack of such coercivity our results build on Lp energy estimates and a Lyapunov structure.

Feedback Loops in Opinion Dynamics of Agent-Based Models with Multiplicative Noise

We introduce an agent-based model for co-evolving opinion and social dynamics, under the influence of multiplicative noise. In this model, every agent is characterized by a position in a social space and a continuous opinion state variable. Agents' movements are governed by positions and opinions of other agents and similarly, the opinion dynamics is influenced by agents' spatial proximity and their opinion similarity. Using numerical simulations and formal analysis, we study this feedback loop between opinion dynamics and mobility of agents in a social space. We investigate the behavior of this ABM in different regimes and explore the influence of various factors on appearance of emerging phenomena such as group formation and opinion consensus. We study the empirical distribution and in the limit of infinite number of agents we derive a corresponding reduced model given by a partial differential equation (PDE). Finally, using numerical examples we show that a resulting PDE model is a good approximation of the original ABM.

Rough homogenization for Langevin dynamics on fluctuating Helfrich surfaces

In this paper, we study different scaling rough path limit regimes in space and time for the Langevin dynamics on a quasi-planar fluctuating Helfrich surfaces. The convergence results of the processes were already proven in the work by Duncan, Elliott, Pavliotis and Stuart (2015). We extend this work by proving the convergence of the Itô and Stratonovich rough path lift. For the rough path limit, there appears, typically, an area correction term to the Itô iterated integrals, and in certain regimes to the Stratonovich iterated integrals. This yields additional information on the homogenization limit and enables to conclude on homogenization results for diffusions driven by the Brownian motion on the membrane using the continuity of the Itô-Lyons map in rough paths topology.

Multilevel Representations of Isotropic Gaussian Random Fields on the Sphere

Series expansions of isotropic Gaussian random fields on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with independent Gaussian coefficients and localized basis functions are constructed. Such representations with multilevel localised structure provide an alternative to the standard Karhunen-Loève expansions of isotropic random fields in terms of spherical harmonics. The basis functions are obtained by applying the square root of the covariance operator to spherical needlets. Localization of the resulting covariance-dependent multilevel basis is shown under decay conditions on the angular power spectrum of the random field. In addition, numerical illustrations are given and an application to random elliptic PDEs on the sphere is analyzed.

Stabilisation of a viscous conservation law by a one-dimensional external force

We study a damped scalar conservation law driven by the sum of a fixed external force and a localised one-dimensional control. The problem is considered in a bounded domain and is supplemented with the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is proved that any solution of the uncontrolled equation can be exponentially stabilised. As a consequence, we obtain the global approximate controllability to trajectories by a one-dimensional localised control.

From interacting agents to density-based modeling with stochastic PDEs

Many real-world processes can naturally be modeled as systems of interacting agents. However, the long-term simulation of such agent-based models is often intractable when the system becomes too large. In this paper, starting from a stochastic spatio-temporal agent-based model (ABM), we present a reduced model in terms of stochastic PDEs that describes the evolution of agent number densities for large populations. We discuss the algorithmic details of both approaches; regarding the SPDE model, we apply Finite Element discretization in space which not only ensures efficient simulation but also serves as a regularization of the SPDE. Illustrative examples for the spreading of an innovation among agents are given and used for comparing ABM and SPDE models.

Linear Parabolic Problems in Random Moving Domains

We consider linear parabolic equations on a random non-cylindrical domain. Utilizing the domain mapping method, we write the problem as a partial differential equation with random coefficients on a cylindrical deterministic domain. Exploiting the deterministic results concerning equations on non-cylindrical domains, we state the necessary assumptions about the velocity filed and in addition, about the flow transformation that this field generates. In this paper we consider both cases, the uniformly bounded with respect to the sample and log-normal type transformation. In addition, we give an explicit example of a log-normal type transformation and prove that it does not satisfy the uniformly bounded condition. We define a general framework for considering linear parabolic problems on random non-cylindrical domains. As the first example, we consider the heat equation on a random tube domain and prove its well-posedness. Moreover, as the other example we consider the parabolic Stokes equation which illustrates the case when it is not enough just to study the plain-back transformation of the function, but instead to consider for example the Piola type transformation, in order to keep the divergence free property.

A domain mapping approach for elliptic equations posed on random bulk and surface domains

In this article, we analyse the domain mapping method approach to approximate statistical moments of solutions to linear elliptic partial differential equations posed over random geometries including smooth surfaces and bulk-surface systems. In particular, we present the necessary geometric analysis required by the domain mapping method to reformulate elliptic equations on random surfaces onto a fix deterministic surface using a prescribed stochastic parametrisation of the random domain. An abstract analysis of a finite element discretisation coupled with a Monte-Carlo sampling is presented for the resulting elliptic equations with random coefficients posed over the fixed curved reference domain and optimal error estimates are derived. The results from the abstract framework are applied to a model elliptic problem on a random surface and a coupled elliptic bulk-surface system and the theoretical convergence rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Evolving surface finite element methods for random advection-diffusion equations

In this paper, we introduce and analyse a surface finite element discretization of advection-diffusion equations with uncertain coefficients on evolving hypersurfaces. After stating unique solvability of the resulting semi-discrete problem, we prove optimal error bounds for the semi-discrete solution and Monte Carlo samplings of its expectation in appropriate Bochner spaces. Our theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments in two and three space dimensions.
