Open-boundary integrable quantum circuits with different geometries

We present a complete classification of integrable Yang-Baxter quantum circuits with open boundary conditions and arbitrary circuit geometries. Starting from the standard transfer-matrix construction with two types of staggered inhomogeneities, we derive a general mapping that determines the arrangement of circuit gates in terms of the inhomogeneities and the system size. We conjecture that time-periodic quantum circuits are integrable whenever the local bulk and boundary gates satisfy the Yang-Baxter equation and the same bulk gate is applied exactly once per period to every nearest-neighbor pair of spins. Our construction also provides an algorithm to detect Yang-Baxter integrability for circuits with arbitrary geometries. Furthermore, we introduce a third type of inhomogeneity, denoted by $\rho$, and demonstrate that the minimum possible circuit depth is four. We show that when these $\rho$-inhomogeneities are placed at the endpoints and in their immediate neighborhood, the resulting boundary gates can be interpreted as single gates acting on multiple sites. Our construction is fully general and applies to regular $R$-matrices, both of difference and non-difference type, together with their associated boundary matrices. As an application, we consider two-qubit gates corresponding to 6- and 8-vertex $R$-matrices of non-difference form satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation, and we construct the associated reflection matrices that generate integrable quantum circuits.

Quantum-group-invariant $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ models: Bethe ansatz and finite-size spectrum

We consider the quantum integrable spin chain models associated with the Jimbo R-matrix based on the quantum affine algebra $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$, subject to quantum-group-invariant boundary conditions parameterized by two discrete variables $p=0,\dots, n$ and $\varepsilon = 0, 1$. We develop the analytical Bethe ansatz for the previously unexplored case $\varepsilon = 1$ with any $n$, and use it to investigate the effects of different boundary conditions on the finite-size spectrum of the quantum spin chain based on the rank-$2$ algebra $D^{(2)}_3$. Previous work on this model with periodic boundary conditions has shown that it is critical for the range of anisotropy parameters $0<\gamma<\pi/4$, where its scaling limit is described by a non-compact CFT with continuous degrees of freedom related to two copies of the 2D black hole sigma model. The scaling limit of the model with quantum-group-invariant boundary conditions depends on the parameter $\varepsilon$: similarly as in the rank-$1$ $D^{(2)}_2$ chain, we find that the symmetry of the lattice model is spontaneously broken, and the spectrum of conformal weights has both discrete and continuous components, for $\varepsilon=1$. For $p=1$, the latter coincides with that of the $D^{(2)}_2$ chain, which should correspond to a non-compact brane related to one black hole CFT in the presence of boundaries. For $\varepsilon=0$, the spectrum of conformal weights is purely discrete.

Inequivalent light-cone gauge-fixings of strings on $AdS_n \times S^n$ backgrounds

Light-cone gauge-fixed sigma-models on $AdS_n\times S^n$ backgrounds play an important role in the integrability formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The string spectrum of the sigma-model is gauge-independent, however the Hamiltonian and scattering matrix of the transverse worldsheet fields are not. We study how these change for a large family of inequivalent light-cone gauges, which are interpreted as $T\bar{T}$, $\tilde{J}T_τ$, $JT_σ$ and $J^τ$ deformations. We investigate the moduli space of equivalent light-cone gauges and, specialising to $AdS_5 \times S^5$, compute the different light-cone gauge symmetry algebras, well-known to be $\mathfrak{psu}(2|2)^{\oplus 2} \oplus \mathfrak{u}(1)^{\oplus 2}$ for the standard gauge-fixing. Many integrable deformations require a non-standard light-cone gauge, hence our classification and analysis of inequivalent gauges will be important for analysing such models.

Exact approaches on the string worldsheet

We review different exact approaches to string theory. In the context of the Green-Schwarz superstring, we discuss the action in curved backgrounds and its supercoset formulation, with particular attention to superstring backgrounds of the $AdS_3$ type supported by both Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz fluxes. This is the basis for the discussion of classical integrability, of worldsheet-scattering factorisation in the uniform lightcone gauge, and eventually of the string spectrum through the mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, which for $AdS_3$ backgrounds was only derived and analysed very recently. We then illustrate some aspects of the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz string, and introduce the formalism of Berkovits-Vafa-Witten, which has seen very recent applications to $AdS_3$ physics, which we also briefly review. Finally, we present the relation between M-theory in the discrete lightcone quantisation and decoupling limits of string theory that exhibit non-relativistic behaviours, highlighting the connection with integrable $T\bar{T}$ deformations, as well as the relation between spin-matrix theory and Landau-Lifshitz models. This review is based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School and Workshop 2022 "Taming the string worldsheet" at NORDITA, Stockholm.

Elliptic deformations of the $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3 \times \mathsf{T}^4$ string

With the aim of investigating the existence of an integrable elliptic deformation of strings on $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3 \times \mathsf{T}^4$, we compute the tree-level worldsheet S-matrix of the elliptically-deformed bosonic sigma model on $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3$ in uniform light-cone gauge. The resulting tree-level S-matrix is compatible with the integrability of the model and has interesting features, including a hidden $\mathsf{U}(1)$ symmetry not manifest in the Lagrangian. We find that it cannot be embedded in the known exact integrable R-matrices describing deformations of the undeformed $\mathsf{AdS}_3 \times \mathsf{S}^3 \times \mathsf{T}^4$ light-cone gauge S-matrix including fermions. Therefore, we construct embeddings of the deformed 6-d metric in type II supergravity with constant dilaton and homogeneous fluxes. The simplicity of these solutions suggests they are promising candidates to lead to an integrable string sigma model including fermions.

The $D^{(2)}_{3}$ spin chain and its finite-size spectrum

Using the analytic Bethe ansatz, we initiate a study of the scaling limit of the quasi-periodic $D^{(2)}_3$ spin chain. Supported by a detailed symmetry analysis, we determine the effective scaling dimensions of a large class of states in the parameter regime $γ\in (0,\fracπ{4})$. Besides two compact degrees of freedom, we identify two independent continuous components in the finite-size spectrum. The influence of large twist angles on the latter reveals also the presence of discrete states. This allows for a conjecture on the central charge of the conformal field theory describing the scaling limit of the lattice model.

Flag Integrable Models and Generalized Graded Algebras

We introduce new classes of integrable models that exhibit a structure similar to that of flag vector spaces. We present their Hamiltonians, R-matrices and Bethe-ansatz solutions. These models have a new type of generalized graded algebra symmetry.

Integrable deformations of AdS/CFT

In this paper we study in detail the deformations introduced in [1] of the integrable structures of the AdS$_{2,3}$ integrable models. We do this by embedding the corresponding scattering matrices into the most general solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We show that there are several non-trivial embeddings and corresponding deformations. We work out crossing symmetry for these models and study their symmetry algebras and representations. In particular, we identify a new elliptic deformation of the $\rm AdS_3 \times S^3 \times M^4$ string sigma model.

Introduction to classical and quantum integrability

In these lecture notes we aim for a pedagogical introduction to both classical and quantum integrability. Starting from Liouville integrability and passing through Lax pair and r-matrix we discuss the construction of the conserved charges for classical integrable models taking as example the harmonic oscillator. The construction of these charges for 2D integrable field theories is also discussed using a Lax connection and the Sine-Gordon model as example. On the quantum side, the XXZ spin chain is used to explain the systematic construction of the conserved charges starting from a quantum R-matrix, solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. The diagonalization of these charges is performed using the algebraic Bethe ansatz. At the end, the interpretation of the R-matrix as an S-matrix in a scattering process is also presented. These notes were written for the lectures delivered at the school "Integrability, Dualities and Deformations", that ran from 23 to 27 August 2021 in Santiago de Compostela and virtually.

Spin chains with boundary inhomogeneities

We investigate the effect of introducing a boundary inhomogeneity in the transfer matrix of an integrable open quantum spin chain. We find that it is possible to construct a local Hamiltonian, and to have quantum group symmetry. The boundary inhomogeneity has a profound effect on the Bethe ansatz solution.

Free Fermions, vertex Hamiltonians, and lower-dimensional AdS/CFT

In this paper we first demonstrate explicitly that the new models of integrable nearest-neighbour Hamiltonians recently introduced in PRL 125 (2020) 031604 satisfy the so-called free fermion condition. This both implies that all these models are amenable to reformulations as free fermion theories, and establishes the universality of this condition. We explicitly recast the transfer matrix in free fermion form for arbitrary number of sites in the 6-vertex sector, and on two sites in the 8-vertex sector, using a Bogoliubov transformation. We then put this observation to use in lower-dimensional instances of AdS/CFT integrable R-matrices, specifically pure Ramond-Ramond massless and massive AdS_3, mixed-flux relativistic AdS_3 and massless AdS_2. We also attack the class of models akin to AdS_5 with our free fermion machinery. In all cases we use the free fermion realisation to greatly simplify and reinterpret a wealth of known results, and to provide a very suggestive reformulation of the spectral problem in all these situations.

Factorization identities and algebraic Bethe ansatz for $D^{(2)}_{2}$ models

We express $D^{(2)}_{2}$ transfer matrices as products of $A^{(1)}_{1}$ transfer matrices, for both closed and open spin chains. We use these relations, which we call factorization identities, to solve the models by algebraic Bethe ansatz. We also formulate and solve a new integrable XXZ-like open spin chain with an even number of sites that depends on a continuous parameter, which we interpret as the rapidity of the boundary.

Yang-Baxter and the Boost: splitting the difference

In this paper we continue our classification of regular solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation using the method based on the spin chain boost operator developed in \cite{deLeeuw:2019zsi}. We provide details on how to find all non-difference form solutions and apply our method to spin chains with local Hilbert space of dimensions two, three and four. We classify all $16\times 16$ solutions which exhibit $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus \mathfrak{su}(2)$ symmetry, which include the one-dimensional Hubbard model and the $S$-matrix of the ${\rm AdS}_5 \times {\rm S}^5$ superstring sigma model. In all cases we find interesting novel solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation.

New integrable 1D models of superconductivity

In this paper we find new integrable one-dimensional lattice models of electrons. We classify all such nearest-neighbour integrable models with su(2)xsu(2) symmetry following the procedure first introduced in arXiv:1904.12005. We find 12 R-matrices of difference form, some of which can be related to known models such as the XXX spin chain and the free Hubbard model, and some are new models. In addition, integrable generalizations of the Hubbard model are found by keeping the kinetic term of the Hamiltonian and adding all terms which preserve fermion number. We find that most of the new models can not be diagonalized using the standard nested Bethe Ansatz.

Classifying nearest-neighbour interactions and deformations of AdS

We classify all regular solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of eight-vertex type. Regular solutions correspond to spin chains with nearest-neighbour interactions. We find a total of four independent solutions. Two are related to the usual six- and eight-vertex models that have R-matrices of difference form. We find two completely new solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, which are manifestly of non-difference form. These new solutions contain the S-matrices of the AdS2 and AdS3 integrable models as a special case. Consequently, we can classify all possible integrable deformations of eight-vertex type of these holographic integrable systems.

Towards the solution of an integrable $D_2^{(2)}$ spin chain

Two branches of integrable open quantum-group invariant $D_{n+1}^{(2)}$ quantum spin chains are known. For one branch (epsilon=0), a complete Bethe ansatz solution has been proposed. However, the other branch (epsilon=1) has so far resisted solution. In an effort to address this problem, we consider here the simplest case n=1. We propose a Bethe ansatz solution, which however is not complete, as it describes only the transfer-matrix eigenvalues with odd degeneracy. We also consider a proposal for the missing eigenvalues.

The spectrum of quantum-group-invariant transfer matrices

Integrable open quantum spin-chain transfer matrices constructed from trigonometric R-matrices associated to affine Lie algebras $\hat g$, and from certain K-matrices (reflection matrices) depending on a discrete parameter p, were recently considered in arXiv:1802.04864 and arXiv:1805.10144. It was shown there that these transfer matrices have quantum group symmetry corresponding to removing the p-th node from the $\hat g$ Dynkin diagram. Here we determine the spectrum of these transfer matrices by using analytical Bethe ansatz, and we determine the dependence of the corresponding Bethe equations on p. We propose formulas for the Dynkin labels of the Bethe states in terms of the numbers of Bethe roots of each type.We also briefly study how duality transformations are implemented on the Bethe ansatz solutions.

Surveying the quantum group symmetries of integrable open spin chains

Using anisotropic R-matrices associated with affine Lie algebras $\hat g$ (specifically, $A_{2n}^{(2)}, A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, B_n^{(1)}, C_n^{(1)}, D_n^{(1)}$) and suitable corresponding K-matrices, we construct families of integrable open quantum spin chains of finite length, whose transfer matrices are invariant under the quantum group corresponding to removing one node from the Dynkin diagram of $\hat g$. We show that these transfer matrices also have a duality symmetry (for the cases $C_n^{(1)}$ and $D_n^{(1)}$) and additional $Z_2$ symmetries that map complex representations to their conjugates (for the cases $A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, B_n^{(1)}, D_n^{(1)}$). A key simplification is achieved by working in a certain "unitary" gauge, in which only the unbroken symmetry generators appear. The proofs of these symmetries rely on some new properties of the R-matrices. We use these symmetries to explain the degeneracies of the transfer matrices.
