Theory, phenomenology, and experimental avenues for dark showers: a Snowmass 2021 report

In this work, we consider the case of a strongly coupled dark/hidden sector, which extends the Standard Model (SM) by adding an additional non-Abelian gauge group. These extensions generally contain matter fields, much like the SM quarks, and gauge fields similar to the SM gluons. We focus on the exploration of such sectors where the dark particles are produced at the LHC through a portal and undergo rapid hadronization within the dark sector before decaying back, at least in part and potentially with sizeable lifetimes, to SM particles, giving a range of possibly spectacular signatures such as emerging or semi-visible jets. Other, non-QCD-like scenarios leading to soft unclustered energy patterns or glueballs are also discussed. After a review of the theory, existing benchmarks and constraints, this work addresses how to build consistent benchmarks from the underlying physical parameters and present new developments for the PYTHIA Hidden Valley module, along with jet substructure studies. Finally, a series of improved search strategies is presented in order to pave the way for a better exploration of the dark showers at the LHC.

Novel flavour-changing neutral currents in the top quark sector

We demonstrate that flavour-changing neutral currents in the top sector, mediated by leptophilic scalars at the electroweak scale, can easily arise in scenarios of new physics, and in particular in composite Higgs models. We moreover show that such interactions are poorly constrained by current experiments, while they can be searched for at the LHC in rare top decays and, more generally, in the channels $pp\to tS(S)+j$, with $S\to\ell^+\ell^-$. We provide dedicated analyses in this respect, obtaining that cut-off scales as large as $Λ\sim$ 90 TeV can be probed with an integrated luminosity of $\mathcal{L} = 150$ fb$^{-1}$.

Study of interference effects in the search for flavour-changing neutral current interactions involving the top quark and a photon or a $Z$ boson at the LHC

Flavour-changing neutral-current interactions of the top quark can be searched for in top-quark pair production with one top quark decaying to an up-type quark and a neutral boson, and they can be searched for in the single production of a top quark in association with such a boson. Both processes interfere if an additional up-type quark is produced in the case of single production. The impact of these interference effects on searches for flavour-changing neutral currents at the LHC is studied for the case where the neutral boson is a photon or a $Z$ boson. Interference effects are found to be smaller than variations of the renormalisation and factorisation scales.

Search for flavour-changing neutral currents $tZ$ interactions in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV with ATLAS

A search for flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) processes in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is presented. The analysed data collected during the years of 2015 and 2016 corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$. A search considering top-quark pair-production events is performed, with one top-quark decaying through the dominant Standard Model (SM) mode $t$ $\to$ $Wb$, and the other through the $t$ $\to$ $qZ$ ($q$=$u$,$c$) FCNC channel. The data are consistent with the SM expectation and the observed and expected upper limits on the branching ratio of $t$ $\to$ $uZ$ and $t$ $\to$ $cZ$ are set at 95% confidence level representing an improvement of about a factor 3 compared with the Run-1 data results from the ATLAS Collaboration.
