Decoupling momentum and energy relaxation rates in cuprate strange metals via giant THz nonlinearities

Understanding the $T$-linear normal-state resistivity of cuprates remains a central physics challenge. The associated momentum relaxation rate, $\Gamma_M$, saturates near the conjectured ``Planckian" bound $\Gamma_M\sim kT/\hbar$, but the mechanism underlying the anomalous scattering remains unresolved. Here we employ nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy to systematically study La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ across a broad temperature and doping range. We measure the normal-state third-order susceptibility, $|\chi^{(3)}|\approx 6\times10^{-9}$ m$^2$/V$^2$, among the largest in the THz regime, enabling direct access to the rarely measured electronic energy relaxation rate, $\Gamma_E$. Strikingly, $\Gamma_E$ is 10-40 times smaller than $\Gamma_M$, revealing that the scatterings responsible for momentum loss and $T$-linear resistivity do not remove appreciable energy from the electrons. While $\Gamma_M (T)$ is consistent with quasi-elastic scattering from bosonic modes above their characteristic energy scale, this is incompatible with the increasing temperature dependence of $\Gamma_E(T)$. Our results exclude phonons as the source of $T$-linear resistivity and impose strong constraints on possible mechanisms.

Fermi surface transformation at the pseudogap critical point of a cuprate superconductor

The nature of the pseudogap phase remains a major barrier to our understanding of cuprate high-temperature superconductivity. Whether or not this metallic phase is defined by any of the reported broken symmetries, the topology of its Fermi surface remains a fundamental open question. Here we use angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) to measure the Fermi surface of the cuprate Nd-LSCO. Above the critical doping $p^*$ -- outside of the pseudogap phase -- we fit the ADMR data and extract a Fermi surface geometry that is in quantitative agreement with angle-resolved photoemission. Below $p^*$ -- within the pseudogap phase -- the ADMR is qualitatively different, revealing a clear transformation of the Fermi surface. Changes in the quasiparticle lifetime across $p^*$ are ruled out as the cause of this transformation. Instead we find that our data are most consistent with a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by a $Q=(π, π)$ wavevector.

BCS $d$-wave behavior in the THz electrodynamic response of electron-doped cuprate superconductors

Although cuprate superconductors have been intensively studied for the past decades, there is no consensus regarding the microscopic origin of their superconductivity. In this work, we measure the low-energy electrodynamic response of slightly underdoped and overdoped La$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films using time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy to determine the temperature and field dependence of the superfluid spectral weight. We show that the temperature dependence obeys the relation \textit{n$_s$} $\propto$ $1-(T/T_c)^2$, typical for dirty limit BCS-like $d$-wave superconductors. Furthermore, the magnetic field dependence was found to follow a sublinear $\sqrt{B}$ form, which supports predictions based on a $d$-wave symmetry for the superconducting gap. These observations imply that the superconducting order in these electron-doped cuprates can be well described in terms of a disordered BCS $d$-wave formalism.
