Controlling propagation of spatial coherence for enhanced imaging through scattering media

It is known that a spatially partially coherent light field produces better imaging contrast compared to a spatially coherent field and that the contrast increases as the spatial coherence length of the field becomes smaller. The transverse spatial coherence length of most spatially partially coherent fields increases upon propagation. As a result, the field produces progressively decreasing image quality at subsequent transverse planes. By controlling the propagation of spatial coherence, we demonstrate enhanced image quality at different transverse planes along the propagation direction through a scattering medium. Using a source with propagation-invariant spatial coherence function, we report experimental observations of imaging different transverse planes with equal contrast over a significant distance. Furthermore, we generate a spatially partially coherent source that can be tailored to have minimum-possible transverse coherence area at the plane of the object to be imaged, and using this source, we demonstrate imaging spatially separated transverse planes with maximum possible image contrast.

Intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states and measures of two-particle quantum correlations

Recently, a basis-invariant measure of coherence known as the intrinsic degree of coherence has been established for classical and single-particle quantum states [JOSA B {\bf 36}, 2765 (2019)]. Using the same mathematical construction, in this article, we define the intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states and demonstrate its usefulness in quantifying two-particle quantum correlations and entanglement. In this context, first of all, we show that the intrinsic degree of coherence of a two-qubit state puts an upper bound on the violations of Bell inequalities that can be achieved with the state and that a two-qubit state with intrinsic degree of coherence less than $1/\sqrt{3}$ cannot violate Bell inequalities. We then show that the quantum discord of a two-qubit state, which quantifies the amount of quantum correlations available in the two-qubit state for certain tasks, is bounded from above by the intrinsic degree of coherence of the state. Next, in the context of two-particle entanglement, we show that the range of values that the concurrence of a two-qubit state can take is decided by the intrinsic degree of coherence of the two-qubit state together with that of the individual qubits. Finally, for the polarization two-qubit states generated by parametric down-conversion of a pump photon, we propose an experimental scheme for measuring the intrinsic degree of coherence of two-qubit states. We also present our theoretical study showing how the intrinsic degree of coherence of a pump photon dictates the maximum intrinsic degree of coherence of the generated two-qubit state.

Generation of Gaussian Schell-model fields as mixtures of their coherent modes

Gaussian Schell-model fields are examples of spatially partially coherent fields, which in recent years have found several unique applications. The existing techniques for generating Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) fields are based on introducing randomness in a spatially completely coherent field and are limited in terms of control and precision with which GSM fields can be generated. In contrast, we demonstrate an experimental technique that is based on the coherent mode representation of GSM fields. By generating individual coherent modes and mixing them in proportion fixed by their coherent mode representation, we experimentally demonstrate generation of several GSM fields. Since our technique involves only mixing of coherent eigenmodes and does not involve introducing randomness from outside, it provides much better control and precision with which GSM fields with a given set of parameter could be generated.

Intrinsic degree of coherence of classical and quantum states

In the context of the 2-dimensional (2D) polarization states of light, the degree of polarization P2 is equal to the maximum value of the degree of coherence over all possible bases. Therefore, P2 can be referred to as the intrinsic degree of coherence of a 2D state. In addition to (i) the maximum degree of coherence interpretation, P2 also has the following interpretations: (ii) it is the Frobenius distance between the state and the maximally incoherent identity state, (iii) it is the norm of the Bloch-vector representing the state, (iv) it is the distance to the center-of-mass in a configuration of point masses with magnitudes equal to the eigenvalues of the state, (v) it is the visibility in a polarization interference experiment, and (vi) it is the weightage of the pure part of the state. Among these six interpretations of P2, the Bloch vector norm, Frobenius distance, and center of mass interpretations have previously been generalized to derive an analogous basis-independent measure PN for N-dimensional (ND) states. In this article, by extending the concepts of visibility, degree of coherence, and weightage of pure part to ND spaces, we show that these three remaining interpretations of P2 also generalize to the same quantity PN , establishing PN as the intrinsic degree of coherence of ND states. We then extend PN to the N -> Infinity limit to quantify the intrinsic degree of coherence P_Infinity of infinite-dimensional states in the orbital angular momentum (OAM), photon number, and position-momentum degrees of freedom.

Two-shot measurement of spatial coherence

We propose and demonstrate an interferometric scheme for measuring the two-dimensional two-point cross-spectral density function in a two-shot manner. Our scheme comprises a Michelson interferometer with a converging lens in one of the arms of the interferometer, and the crosss-pectral density function of an input optical field gets encoded in the intensity distribution of the output interferograms. This scheme works for any cross-spectral density function that is real and that depends on the spatial coordinates only through their difference. Using this scheme, we report measurements of several lab-synthesized cross-spectral density functions with very good agreement with theory. Our measurement technique can be very important for applications that are based on utilizing the partial spatial coherence properties of optical fields.

Angular Schmidt spectrum of entangled photons: derivation of an exact formula and experimental characterization for non-collinear phase matching

We derive an exact formula for the angular Schmidt spectrum of the orbital angular momentum (OAM)-entangled states produced by parametric down-conversion (PDC). We show that our formula yields true theoretical spectrum without any convergence issue as has been the case with the previously derived formulas. Furthermore, we use this formula to experimentally characterize the angular Schmidt spectrum for non-collinear PDC. We report the measurements of very broad angular Schmidt spectra corresponding to angular Schmidt numbers up to 233, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest number reported so far. Our studies can be very important for OAM-based quantum information applications.

Single-shot measurement of the orbital-angular-momentum spectrum of light

The existing methods for measuring the orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) spectrum suffer from issues such as poor efficiency, strict interferometric stability requirements, and too much loss. Furthermore, most techniques inevitably discard part of the field and measure only a post-selected portion of the true spectrum. Here, we propose and demonstrate an interferometric technique for measuring the true OAM spectrum of optical fields in a single-shot manner. Our technique directly encodes the OAM-spectrum information in the azimuthal intensity profile of the output interferogram. In the absence of noise, the spectrum can be fully decoded using a single acquisition of the output interferogram, and, in the presence of noise, acquisition of two suitable interferograms is sufficient for the purpose. As an important application of our technique, we demonstrate measurements of the angular Schmidt spectrum of the entangled photons produced by parametric down-conversion and report a broad spectrum with the angular Schmidt number 82.1.

Efficient generation of propagation-invariant spatially-stationary partially coherent fields

We propose and demonstrate a novel method for generating propagation-invariant spatially-stationary fields in a controllable manner. Our method relies on producing incoherent mixtures of plane waves using planar primary sources that are spatially completely uncorrelated. The strengths of the individual plane waves in the mixture decide the exact functional form of the generated coherence function. We use LEDs as the primary incoherent sources and experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by generating several spatially-stationary fields, including a new type, which we refer to as the "region-wise spatially-stationary field." We also experimentally demonstrate the propagation-invariance of these fields, which is an extremely interesting and useful property of such fields. Our work should have important implications for applications that exploit the spatial coherence properties either in a transverse plane or in a propagation-invariant manner, such as correlation holography, wide-field OCT, and imaging through turbulence.

Transfer of temporal coherence in parametric down-conversion

We show that in parametric down-conversion the coherence properties of a temporally partially coherent pump field get entirely transferred to the down-converted entangled two-photon field. Under the assumption that the frequency-bandwidth of the down-converted signal-idler photons is much larger than that of the pump, we derive the temporal coherence functions for the down-converted field, for both infinitely-fast and time-averaged detection schemes. We show that in each scheme the coherence function factorizes into two separate coherence functions with one of them carrying the entire statistical information of the pump field. In situations in which the pump is a Gaussian Schell-model field, we derive explicit expressions for the coherence functions. Finally, we show that the concurrence of time-energy-entangled two-qubit states is bounded by the degree of temporal coherence of the pump field. This study can have important implications for understanding how correlations of the pump field manifest as two-particle entanglement as well as for harnessing energy-time entanglement for long-distance quantum communication protocols.
