Computing all identifiable functions of parameters for ODE models

Parameter identifiability is a structural property of an ODE model for recovering the values of parameters from the data (i.e., from the input and output variables). This property is a prerequisite for meaningful parameter identification in practice. In the presence of nonidentifiability, it is important to find all functions of the parameters that are identifiable. The existing algorithms check whether a given function of parameters is identifiable or, under the solvability condition, find all identifiable functions. However, this solvability condition is not always satisfied, which presents a challenge. Our first main result is an algorithm that computes all identifiable functions without any additional assumptions, which is the first such algorithm as far as we know. Our second main result concerns the identifiability from multiple experiments (with generically different inputs and initial conditions among the experiments). For this problem, we prove that the set of functions identifiable from multiple experiments is what would actually be computed by input-output equation-based algorithms (whether or not the solvability condition is fulfilled), which was not known before. We give an algorithm that not only finds these functions but also provides an upper bound for the number of experiments to be performed to identify these functions. We provide an implementation of the presented algorithms.

More on Galois cohomology, definability and differential algebraic groups

We make further observations on the features of Galois cohomology in the general model theoretic context. We make explicit the connection between forms of definable groups and first cohomology sets with coefficients in a suitable automorphism group. We then use a method of twisting cohomology (inspired on Serre's algebraic twisting) to describe arbitrary fibres in cohomology sequences -- yielding a useful finiteness result on cohomology sets. Applied to the special case of differential fields and Kolchin's constrained cohomology, we prove that the first constrained cohomology set of a differential algebraic group over a bounded, differentially large, field is countable.

Differential Galois cohomology and parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions

Assuming that the differential field $(K,δ)$ is differentially large, in the sense of León Sánchez and Tressl, and "bounded" as a field, we prove that for any linear differential algebraic group $G$ over $K$, the differential Galois (or constrained) cohomology set $H^1_δ(K,G)$ is finite. This applies, among other things, to closed ordered differential fields $K$, in the sense of Singer, and to closed $p$-adic differential fields in the sense of Tressl. As an application, we prove a general existence result for parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions within certain families of fields; if $(K,δ_x,δ_t)$ is a field with two commuting derivations, and $δ_x Z = AZ$ is a parameterized linear differential equation over $K$, and $(K^{δ_x},δ_t)$ is "differentially large" and $K^{δ_x}$ is bounded, and $(K^{δ_x}, δ_t)$ is existentially closed in $(K,δ_t)$, then there is a PPV extension $(L,δ_x,δ_t)$ of $K$ for the equation such that $(K^{δ_x},δ_t)$ is existentially closed in $(L,δ_t)$. For instance, it follows that if the $δ_x$-constants of a formally real differential field $(K,δ_x,δ_t)$ is a closed ordered $δ_t$-field, then for any homogeneous linear $δ_x$-equation over $K$ there exists a PPV extension that is formally real. Similar observations apply to $p$-adic fields.

Relative internality and definable fibrations

We first elaborate on the theory of relative internality in stable theories, focusing on the notion of uniform relative internality (called collapse of the groupoid in an earlier work of the second author), and relating it to orthogonality, triviality of fibrations, the strong canonical base property, differential Galois theory, and GAGA. We prove that $\mathrm{DCF}_0$ does not have the strong canonical base property, correcting an earlier proof. We also prove that the theory $\mathrm{CCM}$ of compact complex manifolds does not have the strong CBP, and initiate a study of the definable Galois theory of projective bundles. In the rest of the paper we study definable fibrations in $\mathrm{DCF}_0$, where the general fibre is internal to the constants, including differential tangent bundles, and geometric linearizations. We obtain new examples of higher rank types orthogonal to the constants.

Pseudofinite groups and VC-dimension

We develop local NIP group theory in the context of pseudofinite groups. In particular, given a sufficiently saturated pseudofinite structure $G$ expanding a group, and left invariant NIP formula $δ(x;\bar{y})$, we prove various aspects of "local fsg" for the right-stratified formula $δ^r(x;\bar{y},u):=δ(x\cdot u;\bar{y})$. This includes a $δ^r$-type-definable connected component, uniqueness of the pseudofinite counting measure as a left-invariant measure on $δ^r$-formulas, and generic compact domination for $δ^r$-definable sets.

Approximate subgroups with bounded VC-dimension

We combine the fundamental results of Breuillard, Green, and Tao on the structure of approximate groups, together with "tame" arithmetic regularity methods based on work of the authors and Terry, to give a structure theorem for finite subsets $A$ of arbitrary groups $G$ where $A$ has "small tripling" and bounded VC-dimension: Roughly speaking, up to a small error, $A$ will be a union of a bounded number of translates of a coset nilprogression of bounded rank and step (see Theorem 2.1). We also prove a stronger result in the setting of bounded exponent (see Theorem 2.2). Our results extend recent work of Martin-Pizarro, Palacín, and Wolf on finite stable sets of small tripling.

Remarks on theories of free algebras and modules

We ask some questions and make some observations about the (complete) theory T (infinity, V) of free algebras in V on infinitely many generators, where V is a variety in the sense of universal algebra. We focus on the case T(infinity, R) where V is the variety of R-modules (R a ring). Building on work in Kucera-Pillay we characterize when all models of T(infinity, R) are free, projective, flat, as well as when T(infinity,R) is categorical in a higher power.

Model Theory of Proalgebraic Groups

We lay the foundations for a model theoretic study of proalgebraic groups. Our axiomatization is based on the tannakian philosophy. Through a tensor analog of skeletal categories we are able to consider neutral tannakian categories with a fibre functor as many-sorted first order structures. The class of diagonalizable proalgebraic groups is analyzed in detail. We show that the theory of a diagonalizable proalgebraic group $G$ is determined by the theory of the base field and the theory of the character group of $G$. Some initial steps towards a comprehensive study of types are also made.

A note on the effective listing of complete types

We use the "geometric axioms" point of view to give an effective listing of the complete types of the theory $DCF_{0}$ of differentially closed fields of characteristic $0$. This gives another account of observations made in earlier papers.

Some model theory and topological dynamics of p-adic algebraic groups

We initiate the study of p-adic algebraic groups G from the stability-theoretic and definable topological-dynamical points of view, that is, we consider invariants of the action of G on its space of types over Q_p in the language of fields. We consider the additive and multiplicative groups of Q_p and Z_p, the group of upper triangular invertible 2\times 2 matrices, SL(2,Z_p), and, our main focus, SL(2,Q_p). In all cases we identify f-generic types (when they exist), minimal subflows, and idempotents. Among the main results is that the ``Ellis group" of SL(2,Q_p)$ is the profinite completion of Z, yielding a counterexample to Newelski's conjecture with new features: G = G^{00} = G^{000} but the Ellis group is infinite. A final section deals with the action of SL(2,Q_p) on the type-space of the projective line over Q_p.

Amenability, definable groups, and automorphism groups

We prove several theorems relating amenability of groups in various categories (discrete, definable, topological, automorphism group) to model-theoretic invariants (quotients by connected components, Lascar Galois group, G-compactness, ...). For example, if $M$ is a countable, $ω$-categorical structure and $Aut(M)$ is amenable, as a topological group, then the Lascar Galois group $Gal_{L}(T)$ of the theory $T$ of $M$ is compact, Hausdorff (also over any finite set of parameters), that is $T$ is G-compact. An essentially special case is that if $Aut(M)$ is extremely amenable, then $Gal_{L}(T)$ is trivial, so, by a theorem of Lascar, the theory $T$ can be recovered from its category $Mod(T)$ of models. On the side of definable groups, we prove for example that if $G$ is definable in a model $M$, and $G$ is definably amenable, then the connected components ${G^{*}}^{00}_{M}$ and ${G^{*}}^{000}_{M}$ coincide, answering positively a question from an earlier paper of the authors. We also take the opportunity to further develop the model-theoretic approach to topological dynamics, obtaining for example some new invariants for topological groups, as well as allowing a uniform approach to the theorems above and the various categories.

A note on groups definable in the p-adic field

It is known that a group G definable in the field of p-adic numbers is definably locally isomorphic to the group of Q_p-points of a connected algebraic group H defined over Q_p. We show that if H is commutative then G is commutative-by-finite. It follows in particular that any one-dimensional group definable in Q_p is commutative-by-finite. The results extend to groups definable in p-adically closed fields.

Universal covers of commutative finite Morley rank groups

We give an algebraic description of the structure of the analytic universal cover of a complex abelian variety which suffices to determine the structure up to isomorphism. More generally, we classify the models of theories of "universal covers" of rigid divisible commutative finite Morley rank groups.

Topological dynamics and the complexity of strong types

We develop topological dynamics for the group of automorphisms of a monster model of any given theory. In particular, we find strong relationships between objects from topological dynamics (such as the generalized Bohr compactification introduced by Glasner) and various Galois groups of the theory in question, obtaining essentially new information about them, e.g. we present the closure of the identity in the Lascar Galois group of the theory as the quotient of a compact, Hausdorff group by a dense subgroup. We apply this to describe the complexity of bounded, invariant equivalence relations, obtaining comprehensive results, subsuming and extending the existing results and answering some open questions from earlier papers. We show that, in a countable theory, any such relation restricted to the set of realizations of a complete type over $\emptyset$ is type-definable if and only if it is smooth. Then we show a counterpart of this result for theories in an arbitrary (not necessarily countable) language, obtaining also new information involving relative definability of the relation in question. As a final conclusion we get the following trichotomy. Let $\mathfrak{C}$ be a monster model of a countable theory, $p \in S(\emptyset)$, and $E$ be a bounded, (invariant) Borel (or, more generally, analytic) equivalence relation on $p(\mathfrak{C})$. Then, exactly one of the following holds: (1) $E$ is relatively definable (on $p(\mathfrak{C})$), smooth, and has finitely many classes, (2) $E$ is not relatively definable, but it is type-definable, smooth, and has $2^{\aleph_0}$ classes, (3) $E$ is not type definable and not smooth, and has $2^{\aleph_0}$ classes. All the results which we obtain for bounded, invariant equivalence relations carry over to the case of bounded index, invariant subgroups of definable groups.

Generalized Picard-Vessiot extensions and differential Galois cohomology

In an earlier paper it was proved that if a differential field $(K,δ)$ is algebraically closed and closed under Picard-Vessiot extensions then every differential algebraic principal homogeneous space over K for a linear differential algebraic group G over K has a K-rational point (in fact if and only if). This paper explores whether and if so, how, this can be extended to (a) several derivations, (b) one automorphism. Under a natural notion of "generalized Picard-Vessiot extension" (in the case of several derivations), we give a counterexample. We also have a counterexample in the case of one automorphism. We also formulate and prove some positive statements in the case of several derivations.

Embedded Picard-Vessiot extensions

We prove that if T is a theory of large, bounded, fields of characteristic zero, with almost quantifier elimination, and T_D is the model companion of T + "D is a derivation", then for any model U of T_D, and differential subfield K of U whose field of constants is a model of T, and linear differential equation DY = AY over K, there is a Picard-Vessiot extension L of K for the equation which is embedded in U over K Likewise for logarithmic differential equations over K on connected algebraic groups over the constants of K and the corresponding strongly normal extensions of K.

Stable groups and expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+,0)$

We show that if $G$ is a sufficiently saturated stable group of finite weight with no infinite, infinite-index, chains of definable subgroups, then $G$ is superstable of finite $U$-rank. Combined with recent work of Palacin and Sklinos, we conclude that $(\mathbb{Z},+,0)$ has no proper stable expansions of finite weight. A corollary of this result is that if $P\subseteq\mathbb{Z}^n$ is definable in a finite dp-rank expansion of $(\mathbb{Z},+,0)$, and $(\mathbb{Z},+,0,P)$ is stable, then $P$ is definable in $(\mathbb{Z},+,0)$. In particular, this answers a question of Marker on stable expansions of the group of integers by sets definable in Presburger arithmetic.
