Signature flip in deceleration parameter: A thermodynamic phase transition?

Using the Hayward-Kodama temperature for the apparent horizon, it is found that matter content in the Universe is not thermodynamically stable, and the entry to the late accelerated expansion is actually a second order phase transition. The cosmological model used for the purpose is one that imitates the $\Lambda$CDM model, the favoured model for the present Universe.

Raychaudhuri equation in scalar-tensor theory

Implications of the Raychaudhuri equation in focusing of geodesic congruences are studied in the framework of scalar--tensor theory of gravity. Specifically, we investigate the Brans--Dicke theory and Bekenstein's scalar field theory. In both of these theories, we deal with a static spherically symmetric distribution and a spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model as specific examples. We find that it is possible to violate the convergence condition under reasonable physical assumptions. This leads to the possibility of avoiding a singularity.

The Raychaudhuri equation for a quantized timelike geodesic congruence

A recent attempt to arrive at a quantum version of Raychaudhuri's equation is looked at critically. It is shown that the method, and even the idea, has some inherent problems. The issues are pointed out here. We have also shown that it is possible to salvage the method in some limited domain of applicability. Although no generality can be claimed, a quantum version of the equation should be useful in the context of ascertaining the existence of a singularity in the quantum regime. The equation presented in the present work holds for arbitrary $n + 1$ dimensions. An important feature of the Hamiltonian in the operator form is that it admits a self-adjoint extension quite generally. Thus, the conservation of probability is ensured.

Limiting distribution of periodic position measurements of a quantum harmonic oscillator

We consider a particle in harmonic oscillator potential, whose position is periodically measured with an instrument of finite precision. We show that the distribution of the measured positions tends to a limiting distribution when the number of measurements tends to infinity. We derive the expression for the limiting position distribution and validate it with numerical simulation.

Apollo's Voyage: A New Take on Dynamics in Rotating Frames

We first demonstrate how our general intuition of pseudoforces has to navigate around several pitfalls in rotating frames. And then, we proceed to develop an intuitive understanding of the different components of the pseudoforces in most general accelerating (rotating and translating) frames: we show that it is not just a sum of the contributions coming from translation and rotation separately, but there is yet another component that is a more complicated combination of the two. Finally, we demonstrate using a simple example, how these dynamical equations can be used in such frames.

Self Similar Collapse and the Raychaudhuri equation

The role of the Raychaudhuri equation in studying gravitational collapse is discussed. A self-similar distribution of a scalar field along with an imperfect fluid in a conformally flat spacetime is considered for the purpose. The general focusing condition is found out and verified against the available exact solutions. The connection between the Raychaudhuri equation and the critical phenomena is also explored.

Reconstruction of $f(R)$ gravity models for an accelerated universe using Raychaudhuri equation

A new strategy for the reconstruction of $f(R)$ gravity models have been attempted using Raychaudhuri equation. Two examples, one for an eternally accelerating universe and the other for one that mimics a $Λ$CDM expansion history have been worked out. For both the cases, the relevant $f=f(R)$ could be found out analytically. In the first case, $f(R)$ is found to be a combination of power-law terms and in the expression for the second case involves hypergeometric functions. The evolution history of the universe, given as specific values of the kinematical quantities like the jerk or the deceleration parameter, serve as the input. It is found that the corresponding $f(R)$ gravity models, in both the examples, are not viable options.

Holographic dark energy: constraints on the interaction from diverse observational data sets

The present work deals with holographic dark energy models with Hubble horizon as the infra-red cut-off. The interaction rate between dark energy and dark matter has been reconstructed with three different choices of the interaction term. It is shown that the coupling parameter of the interaction term should evolve with redshift to allow the successful transition from decelerated to accelerated phase of expansion. Constraints on the model parameters are obtained from Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis using the supernova distance modulus data and observational measurements of the Hubble parameter. Results show that the model with the coupling parameter increasing with redshift (z) or equivalently decreasing with the evolution, are ruled out. On the other hand, coupling parameters, increasing or slowly varying with the evolution, are consistent with the observed evolution scenario. A Bayesian evidence calculation has been carried out for statistical selection of the reconstructed models. Though the kinematical parameters are well behaved for these models, the physical variables which determine the nature of the components in the matter sector, are not at all realistic. We have concluded that the existence of spatial curvature is essential for this particular type of dark energy models.

Heun polynomials and exact solutions for the massless Dirac particle in the C-metric

The equation of motion of a massless Dirac particle in the C-metric leads to the general Heun equation (GHE) for the radial and the polar variables. The GHE, under certain parametric conditions, has been cast in terms of a new set of $su(1,1)$ generators involving differential operators of \emph{degrees} $\pm 1/2$ and $0$. Additional \emph{Heun polynomials} are obtained using this new algebraic structure and are used to construct some exact solutions for the radial and the polar parts of the Dirac equation.

On Spectrum Generating Algebra of the Heun Operator

The Heun operator has been cast, in terms of the elements of an underlying $su(1,1)$ algebra, under specific parametric conditions, for the purpose of spectrum generation. These elements are differential operators of \emph{degrees} $\pm 1/2$ and $0$. It is found that the regular singularities at $0$ and $\infty$ of the general Heun equation must be \emph{elementary} under the required parametric conditions. The spectrum generation has been demonstrated through a set of examples.

Laser Plasma Interaction and Non-classical Properties of Radiation Field

We show by explicit calculations that non-classical states of the radiation field can be produced by allowing short term interaction between a coherent state of the radiation field with plasma. Whereas, long term interaction, which thermalizes the radiation field, can produce non-classical states of the radiation field only at sufficiently small temperatures. A measure of k-th order squeezing, stricter than the one proposed by Zhang et al, is used to check the emergence of squeezing. It is also shown that photons in the considered thermalized field would follow super-Poissonian statistics.

An analytically solvable time dependent Jaynes Cummings model

Using the underlying su(2) algebra of the Jaynes-Cummings Model (JCM), we construct a time dependent interaction term that allows analytical solution for even off-resonance conditions. Exact solutions for the time evolution of any state has been found. The effect of detuning on the Rabi oscillations and the collapse and revival of inversion is indicated. It is also shown that at resonance, the time dependent JCM is analytically solvable for an arbitrary interaction term.
