On numerical equivalence for algebraic cobordism

We define and study the notion of numerical equivalence on algebraic cobordism cycles. We prove that algebraic cobordism modulo numerical equivalence is a finitely generated module over the Lazard ring, and it reproduces the Chow group modulo numerical equivalence. We show this theory defines an oriented Borel-Moore homology theory on schemes and oriented cohomology theory on smooth varieties. We compare it with homological equivalence and smash-equivalence for cobordism cycles. For the former, we show that homological equivalence on algebraic cobordism is strictly finer than numerical equivalence, answering negatively the integral cobordism analogue of the standard conjecture $(D)$. For the latter, using Kimura finiteness on cobordism motives, we partially resolve the cobordism analogue of a conjecture by Voevodsky on rational smash-equivalence and numerical equivalence.

Fourier-Mukai transformation on algebraic cobordism

We define a notion of Fourier-Mukai transform on algebraic cobordism cycles with $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficients on an abelian variety. We use this to produce a Beauville decomposition of algebraic cobordism and study its consequences, including a decomposition of the cobordism motive of an abelian variety.

Tensor functor from Smooth Motives to motives over a base

Recently, Levine constructed a DG category whose homotopy category is equivalent to the full subcategory of motives over a base-scheme $S$ generated by the motives of smooth projective $S$-schemes, assuming that $S$ is itself smooth over a perfect field. In his construction, the tensor structure required $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficients. The author has previously shown how to provide a tensor structure on the homotopy category mentioned above, when $S$ is semi-local and essentially smooth over a field of characteristic zero, extending Levine's tensor structure with $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficients. In this article, it is shown that, under these conditions, the fully faithful functor $ρ_S$ that Levine constructed from his category of smooth motives to the category $DM_S$ of motives over a base (defined by Cisinski-Déglise) is a tensor functor.

Tensor Structure on Smooth Motives

Grothendieck first defined the notion of a "motif" as a way of finding a universal cohomology theory for algebraic varieties. Although this program has not been realized, Voevodsky has constructed a triangulated category of geometric motives over a perfect field, which has many of the properties expected of the derived category of the conjectural abelian category of motives. The construction of the triangulated category of motives has been extended by Cisinski-Déglise to a triangulated category of motives over a base-scheme $S$. Recently, Bondarko constructed a DG category of motives, whose homotopy category is equivalent to Voevodsky's category of effective geometric motives, assuming resolution of singularities. Soon after, Levine extended this idea to construct a DG category whose homotopy category is equivalent to the full subcategory of motives over a base-scheme $S$ generated by the motives of smooth projective $S$-schemes, assuming that $S$ is itself smooth over a perfect field. In both constructions, the tensor structure requires $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficients. In my thesis, I show how to provide a tensor structure on the homotopy category mentioned above, when $S$ is semi-local and essentially smooth over a field of characteristic zero. This is done by defining a pseudo-tensor structure on the DG category of motives constructed by Levine, which induces a tensor structure on its homotopy category.

Evasiveness and the Distribution of Prime Numbers

We confirm the eventual evasiveness of several classes of monotone graph properties under widely accepted number theoretic hypotheses. In particular we show that Chowla's conjecture on Dirichlet primes implies that (a) for any graph $H$, "forbidden subgraph $H$" is eventually evasive and (b) all nontrivial monotone properties of graphs with $\le n^{3/2-ε}$ edges are eventually evasive. ($n$ is the number of vertices.) While Chowla's conjecture is not known to follow from the Extended Riemann Hypothesis (ERH, the Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet's $L$ functions), we show (b) with the bound $O(n^{5/4-ε})$ under ERH. We also prove unconditional results: (a$'$) for any graph $H$, the query complexity of "forbidden subgraph $H$" is $\binom{n}{2} - O(1)$; (b$'$) for some constant $c>0$, all nontrivial monotone properties of graphs with $\le cn\log n+O(1)$ edges are eventually evasive. Even these weaker, unconditional results rely on deep results from number theory such as Vinogradov's theorem on the Goldbach conjecture. Our technical contribution consists in connecting the topological framework of Kahn, Saks, and Sturtevant (1984), as further developed by Chakrabarti, Khot, and Shi (2002), with a deeper analysis of the orbital structure of permutation groups and their connection to the distribution of prime numbers. Our unconditional results include stronger versions and generalizations of some result of Chakrabarti et al.
