OTFS -- A Mathematical Foundation for Communication and Radar Sensing in the Delay-Doppler Domain

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a framework for communication and active sensing that processes signals in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. This paper explores three key features of the OTFS framework, and explains their value to applications. The first feature is a compact and sparse DD domain parameterization of the wireless channel, where the parameters map directly to physical attributes of the reflectors that comprise the scattering environment, and as a consequence these parameters evolve predictably. The second feature is a novel waveform / modulation technique, matched to the DD channel model, that embeds information symbols in the DD domain. The relation between channel inputs and outputs is localized, non-fading and predictable, even in the presence of significant delay and Doppler spread, and as a consequence the channel can be efficiently acquired and equalized. By avoiding fading, the post equalization SNR remains constant across all information symbols in a packet, so that bit error performance is superior to contemporary multi-carrier waveforms. Further, the OTFS carrier waveform is a localized pulse in the DD domain, making it possible to separate reflectors along both delay and Doppler simultaneously, and to achieve a high-resolution delay-Doppler radar image of the environment. In other words, the DD parameterization provides a common mathematical framework for communication and radar. This is the third feature of the OTFS framework, and it is ideally suited to intelligent transportation systems involving self-driving cars and unmanned ground/aerial vehicles which are self/network controlled. The OTFS waveform is able to support stable and superior performance over a wide range of user speeds.

Modulation Diversity in Fading Channels with Quantized Receiver

In this paper, we address the design of codes which achieve modulation diversity in block fading single-input single-output (SISO) channels with signal quantization at receiver and low-complexity decoding. With an unquantized receiver, coding based on algebraic rotations is known to achieve modulation coding diversity. On the other hand, with a quantized receiver, algebraic rotations may not guarantee diversity. Through analysis, we propose specific rotations which result in the codewords having equidistant component-wise projections. We show that the proposed coding scheme achieves maximum modulation diversity with a low-complexity minimum distance decoder and perfect channel knowledge. Relaxing the perfect channel knowledge assumption we propose a novel training/estimation and receiver control technique to estimate the channel. We show that our coding/training/estimation scheme and minimum distance decoding achieve an error probability performance similar to that achieved with perfect channel knowledge.

Precoding by Pairing Subchannels to Increase MIMO Capacity with Discrete Input Alphabets

We consider Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels with discrete input alphabets. We propose a non-diagonal precoder based on the X-Codes in \cite{Xcodes_paper} to increase the mutual information. The MIMO channel is transformed into a set of parallel subchannels using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and X-Codes are then used to pair the subchannels. X-Codes are fully characterized by the pairings and a $2\times 2$ real rotation matrix for each pair (parameterized with a single angle). This precoding structure enables us to express the total mutual information as a sum of the mutual information of all the pairs. The problem of finding the optimal precoder with the above structure, which maximizes the total mutual information, is solved by {\em i}) optimizing the rotation angle and the power allocation within each pair and {\em ii}) finding the optimal pairing and power allocation among the pairs. It is shown that the mutual information achieved with the proposed pairing scheme is very close to that achieved with the optimal precoder by Cruz {\em et al.}, and is significantly better than Mercury/waterfilling strategy by Lozano {\em et al.}. Our approach greatly simplifies both the precoder optimization and the detection complexity, making it suitable for practical applications.

MIMO Precoding with X- and Y-Codes

We consider a time division duplex (TDD) $n_t \times n_r$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with channel state information (CSI) at both the transmitter and receiver. We propose X- and Y-Codes to achieve high multiplexing and diversity gains at low complexity. The proposed precoding schemes are based upon the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel matrix which transforms the MIMO channel into parallel subchannels. Then X- and Y-Codes are used to improve the diversity gain by pairing the subchannels, prior to SVD precoding. In particular, the subchannels with good diversity are paired with those having low diversity gains. Hence, a pair of channels is jointly encoded using a $2 \times 2$ real matrix, which is fixed {\em a priori} and does not change with each channel realization. For X-Codes these matrices are 2-dimensional rotation matrices parameterized by a single angle, while for Y-Codes, these matrices are 2-dimensional upper left triangular matrices. The complexity of the maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) for both X- and Y-Codes is low. Specifically, the decoding complexity of Y-Codes is the same as that of a scalar channel. Moreover, we propose X-, Y-Precoders with the same structure as X-, Y-Codes, but the encoding matrices adapt to each channel realization. The optimal encoding matrices for X-, Y-Codes/Precoders are derived analytically. Finally, it is observed that X-Codes/Precoders perform better for well-conditioned channels, while Y-Codes/Precoders perform better for ill-conditioned channels, when compared to other precoding schemes in the literature.
