Grassmannian flows and applications to non-commutative non-local and local integrable systems

We present a method for linearising classes of matrix-valued nonlinear partial differential equations with local and nonlocal nonlinearities. Indeed we generalise a linearisation procedure originally developed by Pöppe based on solving the corresponding underlying linear partial differential equation to generate an evolutionary Hankel operator for the `scattering data', and then solving a linear Fredholm equation akin to the Marchenko equation to generate the evolutionary solution to the nonlinear partial differential system. Our generalisation involves inflating the underlying linear partial differential system for the scattering data to incorporate corresponding adjoint, reverse time or reverse space-time data, and it also allows for Hankel operators with matrix-valued kernels. With this approach we show how to linearise the matrix nonlinear Schrödinger and modified Korteweg de Vries equations as well as nonlocal reverse time and/or reverse space-time versions of these systems. Further, we formulate a unified linearisation procedure that incorporates all these systems as special cases. Further still, we demonstrate all such systems are example Fredholm Grassmannian flows.

The quantum auxiliary linear problem & Darboux-Backlund transformations

We explore the notion of the quantum auxiliary linear problem and the associated problem of quantum Backlund transformations (BT). In this context we systematically construct the analogue of the classical formula that provides the whole hierarchy of the time components of Lax pairs at the quantum level for both closed and open integrable lattice models. The generic time evolution operator formula is particularly interesting and novel at the quantum level when dealing with systems with open boundary conditions. In the same frame we show that the reflection K-matrix can also be viewed as a particular type of BT, fixed at the boundaries of the system. The q-oscillator (q-boson) model, a variant of the Ablowitz-Ladik model, is then employed as a paradigm to illustrate the method. Particular emphasis is given to the time part of the quantum BT as possible connections and applications to the problem of quantum quenches as well as the time evolution of local quantum impurities are evident. A discussion on the use of Bethe states as well as coherent states and the path integral formulation for the study of the time evolution is also presented.

Discretizations of the generalized AKNS scheme

We consider space discretizations of the matrix Zakharov-Shabat AKNS scheme, in particular the discrete matrix non-linear Scrhrödinger (DNLS) model, and the matrix generalization of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) model, which is the more widely acknowledged discretization. We focus on the derivation of solutions via local Darboux transforms for both discretizations, and we derive novel solutions via generic solutions of the associated discrete linear equations. The continuum analogue is also discussed, and as an example we identify solutions of the matrix NLS equation in terms of the heat kernel. In this frame we also derive a discretization of the Burgers equation via the analogue of the Cole-Hopf transform. Using the basic Darboux transforms for each scheme we identify both matrix DNLS-like and AL hierarchies, i.e. we extract the associated Lax pairs, via the dressing process. We also discuss the global Darboux transform, which is the discrete analogue of the integral transform, through the discrete Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko (GLM) equation. The derivation of the discrete matrix GLM equation and associated solutions are also presented together with explicit linearizations. Particular emphasis is given in the discretization schemes, i.e. forward/backward in the discrete matrix DNLS scheme versus symmetric in the discrete matrix AL model.

Solitons: conservation laws & dressing methods

We review some of the fundamental notions associated to the theory of solitons. More precisely, we focus on the issue of conservation laws via the existence of the Lax pair and also on methods that provide solutions to partial or ordinary differential equations that are associated to discrete or continuous integrable systems. The Riccati equation associated to a given continuous integrable system is also solved and hence suitable conserved quantities are derived. The notion of the Darboux-Backlund transformation is introduced and employed in order to obtain soliton solutions for specific examples of integrable equations. The Zakharov-Shabat dressing scheme and the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation are also introduced. Via this method generic solutions are produced, and integrable hierarchies are explicitly derived. Various discrete and continuous integrable models are employed as examples such as the Toda chain, the discrete non-linear Schrodinger model, the Korteweg-de Vries and non-linear Schrodinger equations as well as the sine-Gordon and Liouville models.

Time evolution in quantum systems and stochastics

The time evolution problem for non-self adjoint second order differential operators is studied by means of the path integral formulation. Explicit computation of the path integral via the use of certain underlying stochastic differential equations, which naturally emerge when computing the path integral, leads to a universal expression for the associated measure regardless of the form of the differential operators. The discrete non-linear hierarchy (DNLS) is then considered and the corresponding hierarchy of solvable, in principle, SDEs is extracted. The first couple members of the hierarchy correspond to the discrete stochastic transport and heat equations. The discrete stochastic Burgers equation is also obtained through the analogue of the Cole-Hopf transformation. The continuum limit is also discussed.

Stochastic analysis & discrete quantum systems

We explore the connections between the theories of stochastic analysis and discrete quantum mechanical systems. Naturally these connections include the Feynman-Kac formula, and the Cameron-Martin-Girsanov theorem. More precisely, the notion of the quantum canonical transformation is employed for computing the time propagator, in the case of generic dynamical diffusion coefficients. Explicit computation of the path integral leads to a universal expression for the associated measure regardless of the form of the diffusion coefficient and the drift. This computation also reveals that the drift plays the role of a super potential in the usual super-symmetric quantum mechanics sense. Some simple illustrative examples such as the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the multidimensional Black-Scholes model are also discussed. Basic examples of quantum integrable systems such as the quantum discrete non-linear hierarchy (DNLS) and the XXZ spin chain are presented providing specific connections between quantum (integrable) systems and stochastic differential equations (SDEs). The continuum limits of the SDEs for the first two members of the NLS hierarchy turn out to be the stochastic transport and the stochastic heat equations respectively. The quantum Darboux matrix for the discrete NLS is also computed as a defect matrix and the relevant SDEs are derived.

Non-commutative NLS-type hierarchies: dressing & solutions

We consider the generalized matrix non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) hierarchy. By employing the universal Darboux-dressing scheme we derive solutions for the hierarchy of integrable PDEs via solutions of the matrix Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation, and we also identify recursion relations that yield the Lax pairs for the whole matrix NLS-type hierarchy. These results are obtained considering either matrix-integral or general $n^{th}$ order matrix-differential operators as Darboux-dressing transformations. In this framework special links with the Airy and Burgers equations are also discussed. The matrix version of the Darboux transform is also examined leading to the non-commutative version of the Riccati equation. The non-commutative Riccati equation is solved and hence suitable conserved quantities are derived. In this context we also discuss the infinite dimensional case of the NLS matrix model as it provides a suitable candidate for a quantum version of the usual NLS model. Similarly, the non-commutitave Riccati equation for the general dressing transform is derived and it is naturally equivalent to the one emerging from the solution of the auxiliary linear problem.

Time-like boundary conditions in the NLS model

We focus on the non-linear Schrodinger model and we extend the notion of space-time dualities in the presence of integrable time-like boundary conditions. We identify the associated time-like `conserved' quantities and Lax pairs as well as the corresponding boundary conditions. In particular, we derive the generating function of the space components of the Lax pairs in the case of time-like boundaries defined by solutions of the reflection equation. Analytical conditions on the boundary Lax pair lead to the time like-boundary conditions. The time-like dressing is also performed for the first time, as an effective means to produce the space components of the Lax pair of the associated hierarchy. This is particularly relevant in the absence of a classical r-matrix, or when considering complicated underlying algebraic structures. The associated time Riccati equations and hence the time-like conserved quantities are also derived. We use as the main paradigm for this purpose the matrix NLS-type hierarchy.

Grassmannian flows and applications to nonlinear partial differential equations

We show how solutions to a large class of partial differential equations with nonlocal Riccati-type nonlinearities can be generated from the corresponding linearized equations, from arbitrary initial data. It is well known that evolutionary matrix Riccati equations can be generated by projecting linear evolutionary flows on a Stiefel manifold onto a coordinate chart of the underlying Grassmann manifold. Our method relies on extending this idea to the infinite dimensional case. The key is an integral equation analogous to the Marchenko equation in integrable systems, that represents the coodinate chart map. We show explicitly how to generate such solutions to scalar partial differential equations of arbitrary order with nonlocal quadratic nonlinearities using our approach. We provide numerical simulations that demonstrate the generation of solutions to Fisher--Kolmogorov--Petrovskii--Piskunov equations with nonlocal nonlinearities. We also indicate how the method might extend to more general classes of nonlinear partial differential systems.

Partial differential systems with nonlocal nonlinearities: Generation and solutions

We develop a method for generating solutions to large classes of evolutionary partial differential systems with nonlocal nonlinearities. For arbitrary initial data, the solutions are generated from the corresponding linearized equations. The key is a Fredholm integral equation relating the linearized flow to an auxiliary linear flow. It is analogous to the Marchenko integral equation in integrable systems. We show explicitly how this can be achieved through several examples including reaction-diffusion systems with nonlocal quadratic nonlinearities and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a nonlocal cubic nonlinearity. In each case we demonstrate our approach with numerical simulations. We discuss the effectiveness of our approach and how it might be extended.

Space & time discontinuities in Liouville theory and the deformed oscillator model

We consider the deformed harmonic oscillator as a discrete version of the Liouville theory and study this model in the presence of local integrable defects. From this, the time evolution of the defect degrees of freedom are determined, found in the form of the local equations of motion. We also revisit the continuous Liouville theory, deriving its local integrals of motion and comparing these with previous results from the sine-Gordon point of view. Finally, the generic Backlund type relations are presented, corresponding to the implementation of time-like and space-like impurities in the continuum model. Finally, we consider the interface of the Liouville theory with the free massless theory. With the appropriate choice of the defect (Darboux) matrix we are able to derive the hetero-Backlund transformation for the Liouville theory.

Darboux-Backlund transformations, dressing & impurities in multi-component NLS

We consider the discrete and continuous vector non-linear Schrodinger (NLS) model. We focus on the case where space-like local discontinuities are present, and we are primarily interested in the time evolution on the defect point. This in turn yields the time part of a typical Darboux-Backlund transformation. Within this spirit we then explicitly work out the generic Backlund transformation and the dressing associated to both discrete and continuous spectrum, i.e. the Darboux transformation is expressed in the matrix and integral representation respectively.

Classical integrable defects as quasi Bäcklund transformations

We consider the algebraic setting of classical defects in discrete and continuous integrable theories. We derive the "equations of motion" on the defect point via the space-like and time-like description. We then exploit the structural similarity of these equations with the discrete and continuous Backlund transformations. And although these equations are similar they are not exactly the same to the Backlund transformations. We also consider specific examples of integrable models to demonstrate our construction, i.e. the Toda chain and the sine-Gordon model. The equations of the time (space) evolution of the defect (discontinuity) degrees of freedom for these models are explicitly derived.

Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures in an integrable hierarchy and space-time duality

We define and illustrate the novel notion of dual integrable hierarchies, on the example of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy. For each integrable nonlinear evolution equation (NLEE) in the hierarchy, dual integrable structures are characterized by the fact that the zero-curvature representation of the NLEE can be realized by two Hamiltonian formulations stemming from two distinct choices of the configuration space, yielding two inequivalent Poisson structures on the corresponding phase space and two distinct Hamiltonians. This is fundamentally different from the standard bi-Hamiltonian or generally multitime structure. The first formulation chooses purely space-dependent fields as configuration space; it yields the standard Poisson structure for NLS. The other one is new: it chooses purely time-dependent fields as configuration space and yields a different Poisson structure at each level of the hierarchy. The corresponding NLEE becomes a {\it space} evolution equation. We emphasize the role of the Lagrangian formulation as a unifying framework for deriving both Poisson structures, using ideas from covariant field theory. One of our main results is to show that the two matrices of the Lax pair satisfy the same form of ultralocal Poisson algebra (up to a sign) characterized by an $r$-matrix structure, whereas traditionally only one of them is involved in the classical $r$-matrix method. We construct explicit dual hierarchies of Hamiltonians, and Lax representations of the triggered dynamics, from the monodromy matrices of either Lax matrix. An appealing procedure to build a multi-dimensional lattice of Lax pair, through successive uses of the dual Poisson structures, is briefly introduced.

Scattering in Twisted Yangians

We study the bulk and boundary scattering of the sl(N) twisted Yangian spin chain via the solution of the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit. Explicit expressions for the scattering amplitudes are obtained and the factorization of the bulk scattering is shown. The issue of defects in twisted Yangians is also briefly discussed.

A classical variant of the vertex algebra & the auxiliary linear problem

We propose a classical analogue of the vertex algebra in the context of classical integrable field theories. We use this fundamental notion to describe the auxiliary function of the linear auxiliary problem as a classical vertex operator. Then using the underlying algebra satisfied by the auxiliary function together with the linear auxiliary problem we identify the local integrals of motion, which by construction are in involution. The time components of the Lax pair are also identified in terms of the classical vertex operators. Systems in the presence of point like defects as well as systems on the semi-infinite line are investigated. Specific examples associated to the classical Yangian and twisted Yangian are also presented.

The sl(N) twisted Yangian: bulk-boundary scattering & defects

We consider the sl(N) twisted Yangian quantum spin chain. In particular, we study the bulk and boundary scattering of the model via the solution of the Bethe ansatz equations in the thermodynamic limit. Local defects are also implemented in the model and the associated transmission amplitudes are derived through the relevant Bethe ansatz equations.

Jumps and twists in affine Toda field theories

The concept of point-like "jump" defects is investigated in the context of affine Toda field theories. The Hamiltonian formulation is employed for the analysis of the problem. The issue is also addressed when integrable boundary conditions ruled by the classical twisted Yangian are present. In both periodic and boundary cases explicit expressions of conserved quantities as well as the relevant Lax pairs and sewing conditions are extracted. It is also observed that in the case of the twisted Yangian the bulk behavior is not affected by the presence of the boundaries.
