Inverse-Designed Superchiral Hot Spot in Dielectric Meta-Cavity Toward Ultra-Compact Enantioselective Detection

Chiral nanophotonic structures have garnered considerable interest in recent years due to their potential to enhance the efficacy of chirality-sensitive biomolecular detection. Designing metaplatforms to enhance chiroptical signals under linearly polarized excitation is particularly appealing due to the minimal chiral background and the ease of controlling excitation polarization. Here, a novel two-step inverse design scheme for dielectric lossless metasurfaces with superchiral hot spots is proposed. The method extends the local density of field enhancements for non-chiral fields into the chiral regime and significantly surpasses previous enhancements in superchiral field generation. It has been demonstrated that by leveraging the excitation of high quality factor modes with small mode volumes, it is theoretically possible to convert linearly polarized plane waves into a superchiral hot spot with record-high enhancement in the near-field optical chirality up to 10^4. A prototype is successfully implemented using advanced nanofabrication technologies. The optical characterization of the prototype demonstrates a 10^2-fold enhancement in optical chirality. The findings of this study unveil novel prospects for chiral spectroscopy with ultra-compact devices, underscoring the role of machine learning and physics-based inverse design in the development of cutting-edge, functional photonic structures.

Role of Coherence in Polarization Response of Hybrid Monolayer MoS$_2$-Gold Nanoparticle Systems

Monolayers of transition metal dichacogenides show strong second-order nonlinearity and symmetry-driven selection rules from their three-fold lattice symmetry. This process resembles the valley-contrasting selection rules for photoluminescence in these materials. However, the underlying physical mechanisms fundamentally differ since second harmonic generation is a coherent process, whereas photoluminescence is incoherent, leading to distinct interactions with photonic nanoresonators. In this study, we investigate the far-field circular polarization properties of second harmonic generation from MoS$_2$ monolayers resonantly interacting with spherical gold nanoparticles. Our results indicate that the coherence of the second harmonic allows its polarization to be mostly preserved, unlike in an incoherent process, where the polarization is scrambled. These findings provide important insights for future applications in valleytronics and quantum nanooptics, where both coherent and incoherent processes can be probed in such hybrid systems without altering sample geometry or operational wavelength.

Femtosecond laser direct-write photoconductive patterns on tellurite glass

We report the formation of arbitrary photoconductive patterns made of tellurium (Te) nanocrystals by exposing a tellurite (TeO2-based) glass to femtosecond laser pulses. During this process, Te/TeO2-glass nanocomposite interfaces with photoconductive properties form on the tellurite glass substrate. We show that these laser-written patterns have a highly reproducible photo-response, from the near ultraviolet (263 nm) to the visible spectrum, stable over a few months. Specifically, high responsivity (16.55 A/W) and detectivity (5.25*10^11 Jones) of a single laser-written line pattern are measured for an illumination dose of 0.07 mW/cm^2 at 400 nm. This work illustrates a pathway for locally turning a tellurite glass into functional photoconductor of arbitrary shape, without adding materials and using a single laser process step.
