Hypergeometric solutions to coupled Klein-Gordon equations in cosmology with small-field excursions

The Klein-Gordon equation is a second order differential equation that appears in a variety of applications in mathematics, physics and engineering. This equation is often solved using numerical methods, since a general analytical solution is unattainable. However, one can find very useful analytical solutions for some special cases. In cosmology, the Klein-Gordon equation of a field can explain the physics of inflation and has important consequences on understanding the origin and evolution of the universe. An analytical solution to the Klein-Gordon equation in cosmology has been obtained in the small-field excursion approximation, and it turns out that the solution can be written in terms of the confluent hypergeometric limit function. In this work, we derive this result again while showing the details of the calculations and then generalize to the case of two coupled Klein-Gordon equations. We show that the solution of this coupled system can be written in terms of Kummer's hypergeometric limit function while considering minimal assumptions. We carry out a full numerical calculation of the coupled system and compare it to the results from the analytical expressions.

Spectral Fusion for Identifying Early State Exclusion in Symmetric Quantum Spin Chains

Perfect state transfer (PST) in one-dimensional quantum spin chains provides a natural setting in which quantum information transport can be analyzed using spectral methods. In the single-excitation subspace, the dynamics of a chain with nearest-neighbor interactions are governed by a Jacobi matrix, allowing questions of state transfer to be formulated in terms of eigenvalue distributions and symmetry properties of eigenvectors. In this work, we investigate the phenomenon of \emph{early state exclusion} (ESE), whereby the overlap of the time-evolved state with the initial state vanishes at a time strictly earlier than the first occurrence of perfect state transfer. Building on earlier constructions of Hamiltonians exhibiting PST with and without ESE, we provide explicit Jacobi matrix realizations for arbitrary odd-length chains and establish general conditions under which ESE occurs or does not occur. We propose the process of \emph{spectral fusion} (SF) to build infinite families of such Hamiltonians. These results broaden the known class of spin chains displaying early state exclusion and further clarify the role of spectral structure of the Hamiltonians.

Early State Exclusion in 7-Qubit Spin Chains

The existence of infinite families of $N \times N$ Jacobi matrices representing the Hamiltonians of quantum spin chains with and without early state exclusion (ESE) has been shown to exist for any even $N \geq 4$. However, their existence for odd $N \geq 7$ has remained an open problem. In Section 3, we consider a chain of qubits experiencing nearest-neighbor interactions with environmental effects and present infinite families of $7 \times 7$ Jacobi matrices with and without ESE.

A Theorem of Joseph-Alfred Serret and its Relation to Perfect Quantum State Transfer

In this paper we recast the Serret theorem about a characterization of palindromic continued fractions in the context of polynomial continued fractions. Then, using the relation between symmetric tridiagonal matrices and polynomial continued fractions we give a quick exposition of the mathematical aspect of the perfect quantum state transfer problem.
