Broadband on-chip Half Maxwell Fisheye

In this article, we report on the design and the experimental evidence of a Half Maxwell Fish Eye (HMFE), for Silicon Photonics and working at telecommunication wavelength. It is designed by implementing a Graded Photonic Crystal operating in the non-resonant metamaterial regime. The results of 3D Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulations (FDTD) show an excellent broadband focusing capacity. It has been urther fabricated via the Silicon On Insulator (SOI) platform for its compatibility with CMOS technology. Experimentally, its performances are firstly investigated by the means of a fan-shaped set output waveguides. Next, Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) characterisation confirms the wavefront curving inside the HMFE lens. Quantitative analysis of the SNOM results demonstrates its excellent focusing performances: the Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) is $0.466λ_0$ at $λ_0=1550$nm, while the thickness of the lens is $3.18λ_0$.

Direct dark mode excitation by symmetry matching of a single-particle based metasurface

This paper makes evidence for direct dark mode excitation mechanism in a metasurface structure. The dark mode excitation mechanism is entirely determined by structures' symmetry and does not depend on near-field coupling between elements. In our examples, we consider single element based metasurface composed of two V antennas connected in an anti-symmetric arrangement. Both experimental and modeling results show an efficient excitation of magnetic dipolar mode in such structures. The direct dark mode excitation mechanism provides a design that is more robust with respect to technology imperfections. The considered approach opens promising perspectives for new type of nanostructure designs and greatly relaxes fabrication constraints for the optical domain.

Using PT-symmetry for switching applications

This work introduces a new class of PT-symmetry grating assisted devices for switching or modulation applications. Their operation is based on a four-wave interaction, thus marking a step in the further development of PT-symmetry devices which currently are essentially based on two-wave interactions. A remarkable feature of the new device is that all their properties also hold for the case of imperfect PT-symmetry operation, corresponding to the important practical case of fixed losses.

Plasmon ruler with gold nanorod dimers: utilizing the second-order resonance

The idea of utilizing the second-order plasmon resonance of the gold nanorod π-dimers for plasmon rulers is introduced. We report on a qualitatively different dependence of the plasmon resonance shift on the interparticle distance for the first- and second-order longitudinal modes, extending the working range of plasmon rulers up to the distance values of 400 nm.
