On large queue lengths in generalised Jackson networks

This paper proves a large deviation principle (LDP) for the stationary distribution of queue lengths in a subcritical generalised Jackson network assuming a Cramer condition on the interarrival and service times. The deviation function is given by the quasipotential.

Moderate deviations of many--server queues, idempotent processes and quasipotentials

A Large Deviation Principle (LDP) is established for the stationary distribution of the number of customers in a many--server queue in heavy traffic for a moderate deviation scaling akin to the Halfin--Whitt regime. The interarrival and service times are assumed generally distributed. The deviation function is given by a quasipotential. It is related to the longterm idempotent distribution of the large deviation limit of the number-in-the-system process. New results on the trajectorial LDP for that process are also obtained. Proofs rely on the characterisation of large deviation relatively compact sequences as exponentially tight ones and use methods of weak convergence and idempotent processes. Another contribution of the paper concerns bounds on the higher--order moments of counting renewal processes.

Large deviation limits of invariant measures

This paper is concerned with the general theme of relating the Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for the invariant measures of stochastic processes to the associated sample path LDP. It is shown that if the sample path deviation function possesses certain structure and the invariant measures are exponentially tight, then the LDP for the invariant measures is implied by the sample path LDP, no other properties of the stochastic processes in question being material. As an application, we obtain an LDP for the stationary distributions of jump diffusions. Methods of large deviation convergence and idempotent probability play an integral part.

On the metastability of a loss network with diminishing rates

A trajectorial large deviation principle is established in a mean field thermodynamic limit for a multiclass loss network with diminishing rates, which may have several stable equilibria. The large deviation limit is identified as a unique solution to a maxingale problem with a Markov property. The invariant measure of the network process obeys a large deviation principle as well. The network is metastable in that it spends exponentially long periods of time in the neighbourhoods of stable equilibria. A specific case of a two--class network with two stable equilibria and one unstable equilibrium is examined.

Large deviations of the long term distribution of a non Markov process

We prove that the long term distribution of the queue length process in an ergodic generalised Jackson network obeys the Large Deviation Principle with a deviation function given by the quasipotential. The latter is related to the unique long term idempotent distribution, which is also a stationary idempotent distribution, of the large deviation limit of the queue length processes. The proof draws on developments in queueing network stability and idempotent probability.

On long term investment optimality

We study the problem of optimal long term portfolio selection with a view to beat a benchmark. Two kinds of objectives are considered. One concerns the probability of outperforming the benchmark and seeks either to minimise the decay rate of the probability that the portfolio exceeds the benchmark or to maximise the decay rate that the portfolio falls short. The other criterion concerns the growth rate of the risk-sensitive utility of wealth which has to be either minimised, for the risk-averse investor, or maximised, for the risk-seeking investor. It is assumed that the mean returns and volatilities of the securities are affected by an economic factor, possibly, in a nonlinear fashion. The economic factor and the benchmark are modelled with general Itô differential equations. The results identify optimal portfolios and produce decay, or growth, rates. The portfolios have the form of time-homogeneous functions of the economic factor. Furthermore, a uniform treatment is given to the out- and under- performance probability optimisation as well as to the risk-averse and risk-seeking optimisation. In particular, it is shown that there exists a portfolio that optimises the decay rates of both the outperfomance probability and the underperformance probability. Whereas earlier research on the subject has relied on the techniques of stochastic optimal control and dynamic programming, in this contribution the quantities of interest are studied directly by employing the methods of the large deviation theory. The key to the analysis is to recognise the setup in question as a case of coupled diffusions with time scale separation, with the economic factor representing "the fast process".

On minimising a portfolio's shortfall probability

We obtain a lower asymptotic bound on the decay rate of the probability of a portfolio's underperformance against a benchmark over a large time horizon. It is assumed that the prices of the securities are governed by geometric Brownian motions with the coefficients depending on an economic factor, possibly nonlinearly. The economic factor is modelled with a general Ito equation. The bound is shown to be tight. More specifically, epsilon-optimal portfolios are obtained under additional conditions.

On large deviations of coupled diffusions with time scale separation

We consider two Ito equations that evolve on different time scales. The equations are fully coupled in the sense that all coefficients may depend on both the "slow" and the "fast" processes and the diffusion terms may be correlated. The diffusion term in the "slow" process is small. A large deviation principle is obtained for the joint distribution of the slow process and of the empirical measure of the fast process. By projecting on the slow and fast variables, we arrive at new results on large deviations in the averaging framework and on large deviations of the empirical measures of ergodic diffusions, respectively. The proof of the main result relies on the property that exponential tightness implies large deviation relative compactness. The identification of the large deviation rate function is accomplished by analysing the large deviation limit of an exponential martingale.

On the $M_t/M_t/K_t+M_t$ queue in heavy traffic

The focus of this paper is on the asymptotics of large-time numbers of customers in time-periodic Markovian many-server queues with customer abandonment in heavy traffic. Limit theorems are obtained for the periodic number-of-customers processes under the fluid and diffusion scalings. Other results concern limits for general time-dependent queues and for time-homogeneous queues in steady state.

On the Limit Law of a Random Walk Conditioned to Reach a High Level

We consider a random walk with a negative drift and with a jump distribution which under Cramér's change of measure belongs to the domain of attraction of a spectrally positive stable law. If conditioned to reach a high level and suitably scaled, this random walk converges in law to a nondecreasing Markov process which can be interpreted as a spectrally-positive Lévy %-Khinchin process conditioned not to overshoot level one.

On many-server queues in heavy traffic

We establish a heavy-traffic limit theorem on convergence in distribution for the number of customers in a many-server queue when the number of servers tends to infinity. No critical loading condition is assumed. Generally, the limit process does not have trajectories in the Skorohod space. We give conditions for the convergence to hold in the topology of compact convergence. Some new results for an infinite server are also provided.

A large deviation principle for join the shortest queue

We consider a join-the-shortest-queue model which is as follows. There are $K$ single FIFO servers and $M$ arrival processes. The customers from a given arrival process can be served only by servers from a certain subset of all servers. The actual destination is the server with the smallest weighted queue length. The arrival processes are assumed to obey a large deviation principle while the service is exponential. A large deviation principle is established for the queue-length process. The action functional is expressed in terms of solutions to mathematical programming problems. The large deviation limit point is identified as a weak solution to a system of idempotent equations. Uniqueness of the weak solution is proved by establishing trajectorial uniqueness.

Stochastic processes in random graphs

We study the asymptotics of large, moderate and normal deviations for the connected components of the sparse random graph by the method of stochastic processes. We obtain the logarithmic asymptotics of large deviations of the joint distribution of the number of connected components, of the sizes of the giant components, and of the numbers of the excess edges of the giant components. For the supercritical case, we obtain the asymptotics of normal deviations and the logarithmic asymptotics of large and moderate deviations of the joint distribution of the number of components, of the size of the largest component, and of the number of the excess edges of the largest component. For the critical case, we obtain the logarithmic asymptotics of moderate deviations of the joint distribution of the sizes of connected components and of the numbers of the excess edges. Some related asymptotics are also established. The proofs of the large and moderate deviation asymptotics employ methods of idempotent probability theory. As a byproduct of the results, we provide some additional insight into the nature of phase transitions in sparse random graphs.
