A diffusion limit for Markov chains with log-linear interaction on a graph

In this paper we establish a diffusion limit for a multivariate continuous time Markov chain whose components are indexed by vertices of a finite graph. The components take values in a common finite set of non-negative integers and evolve subject to a graph based log-linear interaction. We show that if the set of common values of the components expands to the set of all non-negative integers, then a time-scaled and normalised version of the Markov chain converges to a system of interacting Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes reflected at the origin. This limit is akin to heavy traffic limits in queueing (and our model can be naturally interpreted as a queueing model). Our proof draws on developments in queueing theory and relies on martingale methods.

Moderate deviations of many-server queues in the Halfin-Whitt regime and weak convergence methods

This paper obtains logarithmic asymptotics of moderate deviations of the stochastic process of the number of customers in a many--server queue with generally distributed interarrival and service times in the Halfin--Whitt heavy traffic regime. The deviation function is expressed in terms of the solution to a Fredholm equation of the second kind. The proof uses characterisation of large deviation relatively compact sequences of probability measures as exponentially tight ones.

The geometry of big queues

We use Hamilton equations to find optimal paths to big queues in Jackson networks. They are shown to be given by fluid trajectories of the dual network. The fluid equations are shown to be dual to the Hamilton equations. Thus, a version of the extended Onzager-Machlup principle is proved: a fluctuation trajectory is the time reversal of a relaxation trajectory of the dual dynamic. The case of a two-node network is given a geometric treatment.
