A solvable model of 3d quantum gravity

We consider a model of 3d quantum gravity defined by $n$ copies of a rational Virasoro TQFT with central charge $1/2$, summed over all 3d topologies. This theory is holographically dual to an ensemble of all 2d CFTs with central charge $c=n/2$ and chiral algebra that includes $Vir_{1/2}^n$. We perform the sum over topologies and evaluate the partition function of the bulk theory. We then confirm the holographic duality by matching it to the boundary ensemble for small $n$. We proceed to consider the limit of a large central charge, in which the bulk theory simplifies and condenses to an Abelian phase. In this regime, the model manifests many features expected in semiclassical 3d quantum gravity. In particular, inclusion of all 3d topologies in the bulk sum cures the negativity of the density of states evaluated by the torus partition function. The model also exhibits a Hawking-Page transition, an exponentially suppressed wormhole amplitude, and provides a toy example of the holographic code. We discuss these aspects in detail and conclude with lessons for semiclassical quantum gravity.

Mass formula for topological boundary conditions from TQFT gravity

Mass formulas evaluate the total weighted count of a given class of algebraic structures, such as lattices or codes. We show that 3d TQFTs provide a generalization of this concept: the total weighted count of topological boundary conditions is given by the TQFT partition function averaged over all closed 3d manifolds. This weighted count, which we call the mass, can be interpreted as the renormalized partition function of TQFT gravity. For Abelian TQFTs, the mass formula for topological boundary conditions reduces to the mass formula for particular families of codes. Focusing on the Abelian case, we show how to evaluate the mass for any bosonic theory and consider many explicit examples. We then discuss the non-Abelian generalization and compute the mass for $n + \bar n$ copies of the Ising modular tensor category. Finally, we generalize the construction to five dimensions and compute the mass for Abelian 2-form Chern-Simons theories.

Holographic duality from Howe duality: Chern-Simons gravity as an ensemble of code CFTs

We discuss the holographic correspondence between 3d "Chern-Simons gravity" and an ensemble of 2d Narain code CFTs. Starting from 3d abelian Chern-Simons theory, we construct an ensemble of boundary CFTs defined by gauging all possible maximal subgroups of the bulk one-form symmetry. Each maximal non-anomalous subgroup is isomorphic to a classical even self-dual error-correcting code over $\mathbb Z_p\times \mathbb Z_p$, providing a way to define a boundary "code CFT." The average over the ensemble of such theories is holographically dual to Chern-Simons gravity, a bulk theory summed over 3d topologies sharing the same boundary. In the case of prime $p$, the sum reduces to that over handlebodies, i.e. becomes the Poincaré series akin to that in semiclassical gravity. As the main result of the paper, we show that the mathematical identity underlying this holographic duality can be understood and rigorously proven using the framework of Howe duality over finite fields. This framework is concerned with the representation theory of two commuting groups forming a dual pair: the symplectic group of modular transformations of the boundary, and an orthogonal group mapping codes to each other. Finally, we reformulate the holographic duality as an identity between different averages over quantum stabilizer states, providing an interpretation in terms of quantum information theory.

Holographic description of 4d Maxwell theories and their code-based ensembles

We formulate a precise holographic duality between an ensemble of 4d $U(1)^g$ Maxwell theories living on a spin four-manifold $M_4$ and an Abelian BF-type 2-form gauge theory of level $N$, summed over all five-manifolds with boundary $M_4$. The elements of the boundary ensemble are Abelian gauge theories specified by self-dual symplectic codes over $Z_N$, that parameterize topological boundary conditions in the 5d TQFT. Similarly, the equivalence classes of topologies distinguished by the 5d theory are parameterized by orthogonal self-dual codes. Hence the holographic duality can be reformulated in the language of quantum stabilizer codes. This duality is closely related to the holographic relationship between ensembles of Narain conformal field theories in 2d and level-$N$ Abelian Chern-Simons theories in 3d. In both contexts, the duality extends to correlation functions. In the large-$N$ limit, we find that the boundary ensemble average converges to an integral over the moduli space of the gauge couplings and, when finite, is equal to an Eisenstein series of the orthogonal group, a version of the Siegel-Weil formula that appears in the 2d/3d context. As a spinoff, we clarify the holographic relationship between the gauge group of the 4d N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and the boundary conditions of the singleton sector in the bulk.

Temperature dependence in Krylov space

We consider the recursion method applied to a generic 2pt function of a quantum system and show, in full generality, that the temperature dependence of the corresponding Lanczos coefficients is governed by integrable dynamics. After an appropriate change of variables, Lanczos coefficients with even and odd indices are described by two independent Toda chains, related at the level of the initial conditions. Consistency of the resulting equations can be used to show that certain scale-invariant models necessarily have a degenerate spectrum. We dub this self-consistency-based approach the ''Krylov bootstrap''. The known analytic behavior of the Toda chain at late times translates into analytic control over the 2pt function and Krylov complexity at very low temperatures. We also discuss the behavior of Lanczos coefficients when the temperature is low but not much smaller than the spectral gap, and elucidate the origin of the staggering behavior of Lanczos coefficients in this regime.

Krylov complexity in quantum field theory, and beyond

We study Krylov complexity in various models of quantum field theory: free massive bosons and fermions on flat space and on spheres, holographic models, and lattice models with the UV-cutoff. In certain cases we find asymptotic behavior of Lanczos coefficients, which goes beyond previously observed universality. We confirm that in all cases the exponential growth of Krylov complexity satisfies the conjectural inequality, which generalizes the Maldacena-Shenker-Stanford bound on chaos. We discuss temperature dependence of Lanczos coefficients and note that the relation between the growth of Lanczos coefficients and chaos may only hold for the sufficiently late, truly asymptotic regime governed by the physics at the UV cutoff. Contrary to previous suggestions, we show scenarios when Krylov complexity in quantum field theory behaves qualitatively differently from the holographic complexity.

Quantum Dynamics in Krylov Space: Methods and Applications

The dynamics of quantum systems unfolds within a subspace of the state space or operator space, known as the Krylov space. This review presents the use of Krylov subspace methods to provide an efficient description of quantum evolution and quantum chaos, with emphasis on nonequilibrium phenomena of many-body systems with a large Hilbert space. It provides a comprehensive update of recent developments, focused on the quantum evolution of operators in the Heisenberg picture as well as pure and mixed states. It further explores the notion of Krylov complexity and associated metrics as tools for quantifying operator growth, their bounds by generalized quantum speed limits, the universal operator growth hypothesis, and its relation to quantum chaos, scrambling, and generalized coherent states. A comparison of several generalizations of the Krylov construction for open quantum systems is presented. A closing discussion addresses the application of Krylov subspace methods in quantum field theory, holography, integrability, quantum control, and quantum computing, as well as current open problems.

Global Symmetries, Code Ensembles, and Sums Over Geometries

We consider Abelian topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) in 3d and show that gaugings of invertible global symmetries naturally give rise to additive codes. These codes emerge as nonanomalous subgroups of the 1-form symmetry group, parameterizing the fusion rules of condensable TQFT anyons. The boundary theories dual to TQFTs with the anyons condensed, i.e. with the corresponding symmetry subgroup gauged, are "code" conformal field theories (CFTs). This observation bridges together, in the holographic sense, results on 1-form symmetries of 3d TQFTs with developments connecting codes to 2d CFTs. Building on this relationship, we proceed to consider the ensemble of maximal gaugings (topological boundary conditions) in a general, not necessarily Abelian 3d TQFT, and propose that the resulting ensemble of boundary CFTs has a holographic description as a gravitational theory -- the bulk TQFT summed over topologies.

Comments on the holographic description of Narain theories

We discuss the holographic description of Narain $U(1)^c\times U(1)^c$ conformal field theories, and their potential similarity to conventional weakly coupled gravity in the bulk, in the sense that the effective IR bulk description includes "$U(1)$ gravity" amended with additional light degrees of freedom. Starting from this picture, we formulate the hypothesis that in the large central charge limit the density of states of any Narain theory is bounded by below by the density of states of $U(1)$ gravity. This immediately implies that the maximal value of the spectral gap for primary fields is $Δ_1=c/(2πe)$. To test the self-consistency of this proposal, we study its implications using chiral lattice CFTs and CFTs based on quantum stabilizer codes. First we notice that the conjecture yields a new bound on quantum stabilizer codes, which is compatible with previously known bounds in the literature. We proceed to discuss the variance of the density of states, which for consistency must be vanishingly small in the large-$c$ limit. We consider ensembles of code and chiral theories and show that in both cases the density variance is exponentially small in the central charge.

Out-of-equilibrium Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis

Understanding how out-of-equilibrium states thermalize under quantum unitary dynamics is an important problem in many-body physics. In this work, we propose a statistical ansatz for the matrix elements of non-equilibrium initial states in the energy eigenbasis, in order to describe such evolution. The approach is inspired by the Eigenstate Thermalisation Hypothesis (ETH) but the proposed ansatz exhibits different scaling. Importantly, we point out the exponentially small cross-correlations between the observable and the initial state matrix elements that determine relaxation dynamics toward equilibrium. We numerically verify scaling and cross-correlation, point out the emergent universality of the high-frequency behavior, and outline possible generalizations.

TQFT gravity and ensemble holography

We outline a general derivation of holographic duality between "TQFT gravity" - the path integral of a 3d TQFT summed over different topologies - and an ensemble of boundary 2d CFTs. The key idea is to place the boundary ensemble on a Riemann surface of very high genus, where the duality trivializes. The duality relation at finite genus is then obtained by genus reduction. Our derivation is generic and does not rely on an explicit form of the bulk or boundary partition functions. It guarantees unitarity and suggests that the bulk sum should include all possible topologies. In the case of Abelian Chern-Simons theory with compact gauge group we show that the weights of the boundary ensemble are equal, while the bulk sum reduces to a finite sum over equivalence classes of topologies, represented by handlebodies with possible line defects.

Pauli Spectrum and Non-stabilizerness of Typical Quantum Many-Body States

An important question of quantum information is to characterize genuinely quantum (beyond-Clifford) resources necessary for universal quantum computing. Here, we use the Pauli spectrum to quantify how magic, beyond Clifford, typical many-qubit states are. We first present a phenomenological picture of the Pauli spectrum based on quantum typicality and then confirm it for Haar random states. We then introduce filtered stabilizer entropy, a magic measure that can resolve the difference between typical and atypical states. We proceed with the numerical study of the Pauli spectrum of states created by random circuits as well as for eigenstates of chaotic Hamiltonians. We find that in both cases the Pauli spectrum approaches the one of Haar random states, up to exponentially suppressed tails. Our results underscore differences between typical and atypical states from the point of view of quantum information.

Holographic Renyi entropy of 2d CFT in KdV generalized ensemble

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in chaotic two dimensional CFTs is subtle due to infinitely many conserved KdV charges. Previous works have demonstrated that primary CFT eigenstates have flat entanglement spectrum, which is very different from the microcanonical ensemble. This result is an apparent contradiction to conventional ETH, which does not take KdV charges into account. In a companion paper \cite{KdVETHgeneral}, we resolve this discrepancy by studying the subsystem entropy of a chaotic CFT in KdV-generalized Gibbs and microcanonical ensembles. In this paper, we carry out parallel computations in the context of AdS/CFT. We focus on the high density limit, which is equivalent to thermodynamic limit in conformal theories. In this limit holographic Renyi entropy can be computed using the so-called gluing construction. We explicitly study the KdV-generalized microcanonical ensemble with the densities of the first two KdV charges $\langle \mathcal{Q}_1\rangle = q_1,\langle \mathcal{Q}_3\rangle = q_3$ fixed and obeying $q_3-q_1^2 \ll q_1^2$. In this regime we found that the refined Renyi entropy $\tilde{S}_n$ is $n$-independent for $n>n_{cut}$, where $n_{cut}$ depends on $q_1,q_3$. By taking the primary state limit $q_3\to q_1^2$, we recover flat entanglement spectrum characteristic of fixed-area states, in agreement with the primary state behavior. This provides a consistency check of the KdV-generalized ETH in 2d CFTs.

Subsystem entropy in 2d CFT and KdV ETH

We study subsystem entropy in 2d CFTs, for subsystems constituting a finite fraction of the full system. We focus on the extensive contribution, which scales linearly with the subsystem size in the thermodynamic limit. We employ the so-called diagonal approximation to evaluate subsystem entropy for the chaotic CFTs in thermal state (canonical ensemble), microcanonical ensemble, and in a primary state, matching previously known results. We then proceed to find analytic expressions for the subsystem entropy at leading order in $c$, when the global CFT state is the KdV generalized Gibbs ensemble or the KdV microcanonical ensemble. Previous studies of primary eigenstates have shown that, akin to fixed-area states in AdS/CFT, corresponding subsystem entanglement spectrum is flat. This behavior is seemingly in sharp contradiction with the one for the thermal (microcanonical) state, and thus in apparent contradiction with the subsystem Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). In this work, we resolve this issue by comparing the primary state with the KdV (micro)canonical ensemble. We show that the results are consistent with the KdV-generalized version of the subsystem ETH, in which local properties of quantum eigenstates are governed by their values of conserved KdV charges. Our work solidifies evidence for the KdV-generalized ETH in 2d CFTs and emphasizes Renyi entropy as a sensitive probe of the reduced-density matrix.

A quantum annealing approach to the minimum distance problem of quantum codes

Quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs) is at the heart of fault-tolerant quantum computing. As the size of quantum platforms is expected to grow, one of the open questions is to design new optimal codes of ever-increasing size. A related challenge is to ``certify'' the quality of a given code by evaluating its minimum distance, a quantity characterizing code's capacity to preserve quantum information. This problem is known to be NP-hard. Here we propose to harness the power of contemporary quantum platforms to address this question, and in this way help design quantum platforms of the future. Namely, we introduce an approach to compute the minimum distance of quantum stabilizer codes by reformulating the problem as a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem and leveraging established QUBO algorithms and heuristics as well as quantum annealing (QA) to address the latter. The reformulation as a QUBO introduces only a logarithmic multiplicative overhead in the required number of variables. We demonstrate practical viability of our method by comparing the performance of purely classical algorithms with the D-Wave Advantage 4.1 quantum annealer as well as hybrid quantum-classical algorithm Qbsolv. We found that the hybrid approach demonstrates competitive performance, on par with the best available classical algorithms to solve QUBO. In a practical sense, the QUBO-based approach is currently lagging behind the best deterministic minimal distance algorithms, however this advantage may disappear as the size of the platforms grows.

Emergence of unitary symmetry of microcanonically truncated operators in chaotic quantum systems

We study statistical properties of matrix elements of observables written in the energy eigenbasis and truncated to small microcanonical windows. We present numerical evidence indicating that for all few body operators in chaotic many-body systems, truncated below certain energy scale, collective statistical properties of matrix elements exhibit emergent unitary symmetry. Namely, we show that below certain scale the spectra of the truncated operators exhibit universal behavior, matching our analytic predictions, which are numerically testable for system sizes beyond exact diagonalization. We discuss operator and system-size dependence of the energy scale of emergent unitary symmetry and put our findings in context of previous works exploring emergence of random-matrix behavior at small energy scales.

Estimation of equilibration time scales from nested fraction approximations

We consider an autocorrelation function of a quantum mechanical system through the lens of the so-called recursive method, by iteratively evaluating Lanczos coefficients, or solving a system of coupled differential equations in the Mori formalism. We first show that both methods are mathematically equivalent, each offering certain practical advantages. We then propose an approximation scheme to evaluate the autocorrelation function, and use it to estimate the equilibration time $τ$ for the observable in question. With only a handful of Lanczos coefficients as the input, this scheme yields an accurate order of magnitude estimate of $τ$, matching state-of-the-art numerical approaches. We develop a simple numerical scheme to estimate the precision of our method. We test our approach using several numerical examples exhibiting different relaxation dynamics. Our findings provide a new practical way to quantify the equilibration time of isolated quantum systems, a question which is both crucial and notoriously difficult.

Holographic description of Narain CFTs and their code-based ensembles

We provide a precise relation between an ensemble of Narain conformal field theories (CFTs) with central charge $c=n$, and a sum of $(U(1) \times U(1))^n$ Chern-Simons theories on different handlebody topologies. We begin by reviewing the general relation of additive codes to Narain CFTs. Then we describe a holographic duality between any given Narain theory and a pure Chern-Simons theory on a handlebody manifold. We proceed to consider an ensemble of Narain theories, defined in terms of an ensemble of codes of length $n$ over ${\mathbb Z}_k \times {\mathbb Z}_k$ for prime $k$. We show that averaging over this ensemble is holographically dual to a level-$k$ $(U(1) \times U(1))^n$ Chern-Simons theory, summed over a finite number of inequivalent classes of handlebody topologies. In the limit of large $k$ the ensemble approaches the ensemble of all Narain theories, and its bulk dual becomes equivalent to "U(1)-gravity" - the sum of the pertubative part of the Chern-Simons wavefunction over all possible handlebodies - providing a bulk microscopic definition for this theory. Finally, we reformulate the sum over handlebodies in terms of Hecke operators, paving the way for generalizations.
