KdV-charged black holes

We construct black hole geometries in AdS$_3$ with non-trivial values of KdV charges. The black holes are holographically dual to quantum KdV Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in 2d CFT. They satisfy thermodynamic identity and thus are saddle point configurations of the Euclidean gravity path integral. We discuss holographic calculation of the KdV generalized partition function and show that for a certain value of chemical potentials new geometries, not the conventional BTZ ones, are the leading saddles.

Zero modes of local operators in 2d CFT on a cylinder

Studies of Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in two-dimensional CFTs call for calculation of the expectation values of local operators in highly excited energy eigenstates. This can be done efficiently by representing zero modes of these operators in terms of the Virasoro algebra generators. In this paper we present a pedagogical introduction explaining how this calculation can be performed analytically or using computer algebra. We illustrate the computation of zero modes by a number of examples and list explicit expressions for all local operators from the vacuum family with the dimension of less or equal than eight. Finally, we derive an explicit expression for the quantum KdV generator $Q_7$ in terms of the Virasoro algebra generators. The obtained results can be used for quantitative studies of ETH at finite value of central charge.

Toda chain flow in Krylov space

We show in full generality that time-correlation function of a physical observable analytically continued to imaginary time is a tau-function of integrable Toda hierarchy. Using this relation we show that the singularity along the imaginary axis, which is a generic behavior for quantum non-integrable many-body system, is due to delocalization in Krylov space.

Rate of cluster decomposition via Fermat-Steiner point

In quantum field theory with a mass gap correlation function between two spatially separated operators decays exponentially with the distance. This fundamental result immediately implies an exponential suppression of all higher point correlation functions, but the predicted exponent is not optimal. We argue that in a general quantum field theory the optimal suppression of a three-point function is determined by total distance from the operator locations to the Fermat-Steiner point. Similarly, for the higher point functions we conjecture the optimal exponent is determined by the solution of the Euclidean Steiner tree problem. We discuss how our results constrain operator spreading in relativistic theories.

Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization in 2d CFTs

Infinite-dimensional conformal symmetry in two dimensions leads to integrability of 2d conformal field theories through an infinite tower of local conserved qKdV charges in involution. We discuss the role this integrable structure plays in equilibration of 2d CFTs. We show that in the thermodynamic limit large central charge 2d CFTs satisfy generalized eigenstate thermalization, with the values of qKdV charges forming a complete set of thermodynamically relevant quantities, which unambiguously determine expectation values of all local observables from the vacuum family. Our work settles the question if non-local or quasi-local charges are necessary to describe equilibrium of large central charge 2d CFTs by showing that upon equilibration local physics can be described by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble that only includes qKdV charges. In the case of a general initial state, upon equilibration, emerging Generalized Gibbs Ensemble will include negative chemical potentials and holographically will be described by a quasi-classical black hole with quantum soft hair.

Exact generalized partition function of 2D CFTs at large central charge

We discuss generalized partition function of 2d CFTs decorated by higher qKdV charges on thermal cylinder. We propose that in the large central charge limit qKdV charges factorize such that generalized partition function can be rewritten in terms of auxiliary non-interacting bosons. The explicit expression for the generalized free energy is readily available in terms of the boson spectrum, which can be deduced from the conventional thermal expectation values of qKdV charges. In other words, the picture of the auxiliary non-interacting bosons allows extending thermal one-point functions to the full non-perturbative generalized partition function. We verify this conjecture for the first seven qKdV charges using recently obtained pertrubative results and find corresponding contributions to the auxiliary boson masses. We further extend these results by conjecturing the full spectrum of bosons and find an exact expression for the generalized partition function as a function of infinite tower of chemical potentials in the limit of large central charge.

Stability of Disturbance Based Unified Control

Introduction of renewable generation leads to significant reduction of inertia in power system, which deteriorates the quality of frequency control. This paper suggests a new control scheme utilizing controllable load to deal with low inertia systems. Optimization problem is formulated to minimize the systems deviations from the last economically optimal operating point. The proposed scheme combines frequency control with congestion management and maintaining inter-area flows. The proposed distributed control scheme requires only local measurements and communication with neighbors or between buses participating in inter-area flows. Global asymptotic stability is proved for arbitrary network. Numerical simulations confirm that proposed algorithm can rebalance power and perform congestion management after disturbance with transient performance significantly improved in comparison with the traditional control scheme.

Generalized Gibbs Ensemble of 2d CFTs at large central charge in the thermodynamic limit

We discuss partition function of 2d CFTs decorated by higher qKdV charges in the thermodynamic limit when the size of the spatial circle goes to infinity. In this limit the saddle point approximation is exact and at infinite central charge generalized partition function can be calculated explicitly. We show that leading 1/c corrections to free energy can be reformulated as a sum over Young tableaux which we calculate for the first two qKdV charges. Next, we compare generalized ensemble with the "eigenstate ensemble" that consists of a single primary state. At infinite central charge the ensembles match at the level of expectation values of local operators for any values of qKdV fugacities. When the central charge is large but finite, for any values of the fugacities the aforementioned ensembles are distinguishable.

Geometry of quadratic maps via convex relaxation

We consider several basic questions pertaining to the geometry of image of a general quadratic map. In general the image of a quadratic map is non-convex, although there are several known classes of quadratic maps when the image is convex. Remarkably, even when the image is not convex it often exhibits hidden convexity: a surprising efficiency of convex relaxation to address various geometric questions by reformulating them in terms of convex optimization problems. In this paper we employ this strategy and put forward several algorithms that solve the following problems pertaining to the image: verify if a given point does not belong to the image; find the boundary point of the image lying in a particular direction; stochastically check if the image is convex, and if it is not, find a maximal convex subset of the image. Proposed algorithms are implemented in the form of an open-source MATLAB library CAQM, which accompanies the paper. Our results can be used for various problems of discrete optimization, uncertainty analysis, physical applications, and study of power flow equations.

Universality of fast quenches from the conformal perturbation theory

We consider global quantum quenches, a protocol when a continuous field theoretic system in the ground state is driven by a homogeneous time-dependent external interaction. When the typical inverse time scale of the interaction is much larger than all relevant scales except for the UV-cutoff the system's response exhibits universal scaling behavior. We provide both qualitative and quantitative explanations of this universality and argue that physics of the response during and shortly after the quench is governed by the conformal perturbation theory around the UV fixed point. We proceed to calculate the response of one and two-point correlation functions confirming and generalizing universal scalings found previously. Finally, we discuss late time behavior after the quench and argue that all local quantities will equilibrate to their thermal values specified by an excess energy acquired by the system during the quench.

Universality of Quantum Information in Chaotic CFTs

We study the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in chaotic conformal field theories (CFTs) of arbitrary dimensions. Assuming local ETH, we compute the reduced density matrix of a ball-shaped subsystem of finite size in the infinite volume limit when the full system is an energy eigenstate. This reduced density matrix is close in trace distance to a density matrix, to which we refer as the ETH density matrix, that is independent of all the details of an eigenstate except its energy and charges under global symmetries. In two dimensions, the ETH density matrix is universal for all theories with the same value of central charge. We argue that the ETH density matrix is close in trace distance to the reduced density matrix of the (micro)canonical ensemble. We support the argument in higher dimensions by comparing the Von Neumann entropy of the ETH density matrix with the entropy of a black hole in holographic systems in the low temperature limit. Finally, we generalize our analysis to the coherent states with energy density that varies slowly in space, and show that locally such states are well described by the ETH density matrix.

Mechanism of slow equilibration of isolated quantum systems

We discuss the approach toward equilibrium of an isolated quantum system. For a wide class of systems we argue that the time-averaged expectation value of a local operator in any initial state is bounded by the so-called deviation function, which characterizes maximal deviation from the equilibrium for all states with a given value of energy fluctuations. We provide numerical evidence that the bound is approximately saturated by the initial configurations with spatial inhomogeneities at macroscopic level. In this way the deviation function establishes an explicit connection between the macroscopically observed timescales associated with transport and properties of microscopic matrix elements. The form of the deviation function indicates that among the slowest states which saturate the bound there are also those with arbitrarily long equilibration times.

Convexity of Solvability Set of Power Distribution Networks

The solvability set of a power network - the set of all power injection vectors for which the corresponding Power Flow equations admit a solution - is central to power systems stability and security, as well as to the tightness of Optimal Power Flow relaxations. Whenever the solvability set is convex, this allows for substantial simplifications of various optimization and risk assessment algorithms. In this paper we focus on the solvability set of power distribution networks and prove convexity of the full solvability set (real and reactive powers) for tree homogeneous networks with the same r/x ratio for all elements. We also show this result can not be improved: once the network is not homogeneous, the convexity is immediately lost. It is nevertheless the case that if the network is almost homogeneous, a substantial practically-important part of the solvability set is still convex. Finally, we prove convexity of real solvability set (only real powers) for any tree network as well as for purely resistive networks with arbitrary topology.

On the Convexity of Image of a Multidimensional Quadratic Map

We study convexity of image of a general multidimensional quadratic map. We split the full image into two parts by an appropriate hyperplane such that one part is compact, and formulate a sufficient condition for convexity of the compact part. We propose a way to identify such convex parts of the full image which can be used in practical applications. By shifting the hyperplane to infinity we extend the sufficient condition for convexity to apply to the full image of the quadratic map. As a related result, we formulate a novel condition for the joint numerical range of m-tuple of hermitian matrices to be convex. Finally, we illustrate our findings by considering several examples. In particular we prove convexity of solvability set for the Power Flow equations in case of DC networks.

The 3d Stress-Tensor Bootstrap

We study the conformal bootstrap for 4-point functions of stress tensors in parity-preserving 3d CFTs. To set up the bootstrap equations, we analyze the constraints of conformal symmetry, permutation symmetry, and conservation on the stress-tensor 4-point function and identify a non-redundant set of crossing equations. Studying these equations numerically using semidefinite optimization, we compute bounds on the central charge as a function of the independent coefficient in the stress-tensor 3-point function. With no additional assumptions, these bounds numerically reproduce the conformal collider bounds and give a general lower bound on the central charge. We also study the effect of gaps in the scalar, spin-2, and spin-4 spectra on the central charge bound. We find general upper bounds on these gaps as well as tighter restrictions on the stress-tensor 3-point function coefficients for theories with moderate gaps. When the gap for the leading scalar or spin-2 operator is sufficiently large to exclude large N theories, we also obtain upper bounds on the central charge, thus finding compact allowed regions. Finally, assuming the known low-lying spectrum and central charge of the critical 3d Ising model, we determine its stress-tensor 3-point function and derive a bound on its leading parity-odd scalar.

Canonical Universality

Isolated quantum system in a pure state may be perceived as thermal if only substantially small fraction of all degrees of freedom is probed. We propose that in a chaotic quantum many-body system all states with sufficiently small energy fluctuations are approximately thermal. We refer to this hypothesis as Canonical Universality (CU). The CU hypothesis complements the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) which proposes that for chaotic systems individual energy eigenstates are thermal. Integrable and MBL systems do not satisfy CU. We provide theoretical and numerical evidence supporting the CU hypothesis.

Charting the space of 3D CFTs with a continuous global symmetry

We study correlation functions of a conserved spin-1 current $J_μ$ in three dimensional Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). We investigate the constraints imposed by permutation symmetry and current conservation on the form of three point functions $\langle J_μJ_ν\mathcal O_{Δ,\ell}\rangle $ and the four point function $\langle J_μJ_νJ_ρJ_σ\rangle $ and identify the minimal set of independent crossing symmetry conditions. We obtain a recurrence relation for conformal blocks for generic spin-1 operators in three dimensions. In the process, we improve several technical points, facilitating the use of recurrence relations. By applying the machinery of the numerical conformal bootstrap we obtain universal bounds on the dimensions of certain light operators as well as the central charge. Highlights of our results include numerical evidence for the conformal collider bound and new constraints on the parameters of the critical $O(2)$ model. The results obtained in this work apply to any unitary, parity-preserving three dimensional CFT.

Canonical Typicality of Energy Eigenstates of an Isolated Quantum System

Currently there are two main approaches to describe how quantum statistical physics emerges from an isolated quantum many-body system in a pure state: Canonical Typicality (CT) and Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). These two approaches has different but overlapping areas of validity, phenomenology and set of physical outcomes. In this paper we discuss the relation between CT and ETH and propose a formulation of ETH in terms of the reduced density matrix. We provide strong numerical evidences for the proposal.
