Ultrafast perturbation of magnetic domains by optical pumping in a ferromagnetic multilayer

Ultrafast optical pumping of spatially nonuniform magnetic textures is known to induce far-from-equilibrium spin transport effects. Here, we use ultrafast x-ray diffraction with unprecedented dynamic range to study the laser-induced dynamics of labyrinth domain networks in ferromagnetic CoFe/Ni multilayers. We detected azimuthally isotropic, odd order, magnetic diffraction rings up to 5th order. The amplitudes of all three diffraction rings quench to different degrees within 1.6 ps. In addition, all three of the detected diffraction rings both broaden by 15% and radially contract by 6% during the quench process. We are able to rigorously quantify a 31% ultrafast broadening of the domain walls via Fourier analysis of the order-dependent quenching of the three detected diffraction rings. The broadening of the diffraction rings is interpreted as a reduction in the domain coherence length, but the shift in the ring radius, while unambiguous in its occurrence, remains unexplained. In particular, we demonstrate that a radial shift explained by domain wall broadening can be ruled out. With the unprecedented dynamic range of our data, our results provide convincing evidence that labyrinth domain structures are spatially perturbed at ultrafast speeds under far-from-equilibrium conditions, albeit the mechanism inducing the perturbations remains yet to be clarified.

Angular X-ray Cross-Correlation Analysis Applied to the Scattering Data in 3D Reciprocal Space from a Single Crystal

We propose an application of the Angular X-ray Cross-Correlation Analysis (AXCCA) to the scattered intensity distribution measured in three-dimensional (3D) reciprocal space from a single crystalline sample. Contrary to the conventional application of AXCCA, when averaging over many two-dimensional (2D) diffraction patterns collected from different randomly oriented samples is required, the proposed approach gives an insight into the structure of a single specimen. This is particularly useful in studies of defect-reach samples that are unlikely to have the same structure. Here, we demonstrate an example of a qualitative structure determination of a colloidal crystal on the simulated as well as experimentally measured 3D scattered intensity distributions.

Unravelling structural rearrangement of polymer colloidal crystals under dry sintering conditions

Structural rearrangement of polystyrene colloidal crystals under dry sintering conditions has been revealed by in situ grazing incidence X-ray scattering. Measured diffraction patterns were analysed using distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) theory and the structural parameters of as-grown colloidal crystals of three different particle sizes were determined for in-plane and out-of-plane directions in a film. By analysing the temperature evolution of diffraction peak positions, integrated intensities, and widths the detailed scenario of structural rearrangement of crystalline domains at a nanoscale has been revealed, including thermal expansion, particle shape transformation and crystal amorphisation. Based on DWBA analysis we demonstrate that in the process of dry sintering the shape of colloidal particles in a crystal transforms from a sphere to a polyhedron. Our results deepen the understanding of thermal annealing of polymer colloidal crystals as an efficient route to the design of new nano-materials.

Water Window Ptychographic Imaging with Characterized Coherent X-rays

We report on a ptychographical coherent diffractive imaging experiment in the water window with focused soft X-rays at $500~\mathrm{eV}$. An X-ray beam with high degree of coherence was selected for ptychography at the P04 beamline of the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source. We measured the beam coherence with the newly developed non-redundant array method. A pinhole $2.6~\mathrm{μm}$ in size selected the coherent part of the beam and was used for ptychographic measurements of a lithographically manufactured test sample and fossil diatom. The achieved resolution was $53~\mathrm{nm}$ for the test sample and only limited by the size of the detector. The diatom was imaged at a resolution better than $90~\mathrm{nm}$.
