Some numerical and algorithmical probelms in the asymptotic representation theory

The article presents the results of experiments in computation of statistical values related to Young diagrams, including the estimates on maximum and average (by Plancherel distribution) dimension of irreducible representation of symmetric group $S_n$. The computed limit shapes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional diagrams distributed by Richardson statistics are presented as well.

Does there exist the Lebesgue measure in the infinite-dimensional space?

We study the sigma-finite measures in the space of vector-valued distributions on the manifold $X$ with Laplace transform $$Ψ(f)=\exp\{-θ\int_X\ln||f(x)||dx\}, θ>0.$$ We also consider the weak limit of Haar measures on the Cartan subgroup of the group $SL(n,{\Bbb R})$ when $n$ tends to infinity. The measure in the limit is called {\it infinite dimensional Lebesgue measure}. It is invariant under the linear action of some infinite-dimensional Abelian group which is an analog of Cartan subgroup. The measure also is closely related to the Poisson--Dirichlet measures well known in combinatorics and probability theory. The only known example of the analogous asymptotical behavior of the uniform measure on the homogeneous manifold is {\it classical Maxwell-Poincaré lemma} which asserts that the weak limit of uniform measures on the Euclidean sphere of appropriate radius as dimension tends to infinity is the standard infinite-dimensional Gaussian measure and white noise, but in our situation all the measures are no more finite but sigma-finite.

L.V.Kantorovich and Linear Programming

I want to write about what I know and remember about the activities of Leonid Vital'evich Kantorovich, an outstanding scientist of the 20th century; about his dramatic struggle for recognition of his mathematical economic theories; about the initial stage of the history of linear programming; about beautuful Kantorovich metric, about the creation of a new area of mathematical activity related to economic applications, which is called sometimes operation research, sometimes mathematical economics, sometimes linear and convex programming, or economic cybernetics, etc.; about its place in the modern mathematical landscape; and, finally, about several personal impressions of this distinguished scientist. The notes in no way pretend to exhaust these topics.

Algebraic Polymorphisms

In this paper we consider a special class of polymorphisms with invariant measure, - (cf.[1])- the algebraic polymorphisms of compact groups. A general polymorphism is -- by definition -- a many-valued map with invariant measure, and the conjugate operator of a polymorphism is a Markov operator (i.e., a positive operator on $L^2$ of norm 1 which preserves the constants). In the algebraic case a polymorphism is a correspondence in the sense of algebraic geometry, but here we investigate it from a dynamical point of view. The most important examples are the algebraic polymorphisms of torus, where we introduce a parametrization of the semigroup of toral polymorphisms in terms of rational matrices and describe the spectra of the corresponding Markov operators.

Twisted Burnside theorem for type II_1 groups: an example

The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the following conjecture of Fel'shtyn and Hill, which is a generalization of the classical Burnside theorem: Let G be a countable discrete group, f its automorphism, R(f) the number of f-conjugacy classes (Reidemeister number), S(f):=# Fix (f^) the number of f-invariant equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations. If one of R(f) and S(f) is finite, then it is equal to the other. This conjecture plays a very important role in the theory of twisted conjugacy classes having a long history and has very serious consequences in Dynamics, while its proof needs rather fine results from Functional and Non-commutative Harmonic Analysis. It was proved for finitely generated groups of type I in a previous paper. In the present paper this conjecture is disproved for non-type I groups. More precisely, an example of a group and its automorphism is constructed such that the number of fixed irreducible representations is greater than the Reidemeister number. But the number of fixed finite-dimensional representations (i.e. the number of invariant finite-dimensional characters) in this example coincides with the Reidemeister number.

Harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group

Let S be the group of finite permutations of the naturals 1,2,... The subject of the paper is harmonic analysis for the Gelfand pair (G,K), where G stands for the product of two copies of S while K is the diagonal subgroup in G. The spherical dual to (G,K) (that is, the set of irreducible spherical unitary representations) is an infinite-dimensional space. For such Gelfand pairs, the conventional scheme of harmonic analysis is not applicable and it has to be suitably modified. We construct a compactification of S called the space of virtual permutations. It is no longer a group but it is still a G-space. On this space, there exists a unique G-invariant probability measure which should be viewed as a true substitute of Haar measure. More generally, we define a 1-parameter family of probability measures on virtual permutations, which are quasi-invariant under the action of G. Using these measures we construct a family {T_z} of unitary representations of G depending on a complex parameter z. We prove that any T_z admits a unique decomposition into a multiplicity free integral of irreducible spherical representations of (G,K). Moreover, the spectral types of different representations (which are defined by measures on the spherical dual) are pairwise disjoint. Our main result concerns the case of integral values of parameter z: then we obtain an explicit decomposition of T_z into irreducibles. The case of nonintegral z is quite different. It was studied by Borodin and Olshanski, see e.g. the survey math.RT/0311369.

Fock factorizations, and decompositions of the $L^2$ spaces over general Levy processes

We explicitly construct and study an isometry between the spaces of square integrable functionals of an arbitrary Levy process and a vector-valued Gaussian white noise. In particular, we obtain explicit formulas for this isometry at the level of multiplicative functionals and at the level of orthogonal decompositions, as well as find its kernel. We consider in detail the central special case: the isometry between the $L^2$ spaces over a Poisson process and the corresponding white noise. The key role in our considerations is played by the notion of measure and Hilbert factorizations and related notions of multiplicative and additive functionals and logarithm. The obtained results allow us to introduce a canonical Fock structure (an analogue of the Wiener--Ito decomposition) in the $L^2$ space over an arbitrary Levy process. An application to the representation theory of current groups is considered. An example of a non-Fock factorization is given.

Frobenius-Schur functions

The present paper is a detailed version of math/0003031. We introduce and study a new basis in the algebra of symmetric functions. The elements of this basis are called the Frobenius-Schur functions (FS-functions, for short). Our main motivation for studying the FS-functions is the fact that they enter a formula expressing the combinatorial dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This formula plays a key role in the asymptotic character theory of the symmetric groups. The FS-functions are inhomogeneous, and their top homogeneous components coincide with the conventional Schur functions. The FS-functions are best described in the super realization of the algebra of symmetric functions. As supersymmetric functions, the FS-functions can be characterized as a solution to an interpolation problem. Our main result is a simple determinantal formula for the transition coefficients between the FS-functions and the Schur functions. We also establish the FS analogs for a number of basic facts concerning the Schur functions: Jacobi-Trudi formula together with its dual form; combinatorial formula (expression in terms of tableaux); Giambelli formula and the Sergeev-Pragacz formula. All these results hold for a large family of bases interpolating between the FS-functions and the ordinary Schur functions.

Frobenius-Schur functions: summary of results

We introduce and study a family of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call the Frobenius-Schur functions. These functions are indexed by partitions and differ from the conventional Schur functions in lower terms only. Our interest in these new functions comes from the fact that they provide an explicit expression for the dimension of a skew Young diagram in terms of the Frobenius coordinates. This is important for the asymptotic theory of the characters of the symmetric groups. Our main result is a surprisingly simple determinantal expression of the Frobenius-Schur functions in terms of the conventional Schur functions. Other results include certain generating series, the Giambelli formula, vanishing properties and interpolation, a combinatorial formula (representation in terms of tableaux), and a Sergeev-Pragacz-type formula. Actually, we deal with a wider class of inhomogeneous symmetric functions which we call multiparameter Schur functions. These functions depend on an arbitrary doubly infinite sequence of parameters and interpolate between the Frobenius--Schur functions and the conventional Schur functions. This paper contains the statements of the results and the main formulas. Proofs will be given in an expanded version of the paper which will be posted in the arXiv.

Ergodic properties of Erdös measure, the entropy of the goldenshift, and related problems

We define a two-sided analog of Erdös measure on the space of two-sided expansions with respect to the powers of the golden ratio, or, equivalently, the Erdös measure on the 2-torus. We construct the transformation (goldenshift) preserving both Erdös and Lebesgue measures on $\Bbb T^2$ which is the induced automorphism with respect to the ordinary shift (or the corresponding Fibonacci toral automorphism) and proves to be Bernoulli with respect to both measures in question. This provides a direct way to obtain formulas for the entropy dimension of the Erdös measure on the interval, its entropy in the sense of Garsia-Alexander-Zagier and some other results. Besides, we study central measures on the Fibonacci graph, the dynamics of expansions and related questions.

Bijective arithmetic codings of hyperbolic automorphisms of the 2-torus, and binary quadratic forms

We study the arithmetic codings of hyperbolic automorphisms of the 2-torus, i.e. the continuous mappings acting from a certain symbolic space of sequences with a finite alphabet endowed with an appropriate structure of additive group onto the torus which preserve this structure and turn the two-sided shift into a given automorphism of the torus. This group is uniquely defined by an automorphism, and such an arithmetic coding is a homomorphism of that group onto the 2-torus. The necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of a bijective arithmetic coding is obtained; it is formulated in terms of a certain binary quadratic form constructed by means of a given automorphism. Furthermore, we describe all bijective arithmetic codings in terms the Dirichlet group of the corresponding quadratic field. The minimum of that quadratic form over the nonzero elements of the lattice coincides with the minimal possible order of the kernel of a homomorphism described above.
