The Mullins-Sekerka problem via the method of potentials

It is shown that the two-dimensional Mullins-Sekerka problem is well-posed in all subcritical Sobolev spaces $H^r(\mathbb{R})$ with $r\in(3/2,2).$ This is the first result where this issue is established in an unbounded geometry. The novelty of our approach is the use of potential theory to formulate the model as an evolution problem with nonlinearities expressed by singular integral operators.

The Muskat problem with surface tension and equal viscosities in subcritical $L_p$-Sobolev spaces

In this paper we establish the well-posedness of the Muskat problem with surface tension and equal viscosities in the subcritical Sobolev spaces $W^s_p(\mathbb{R})$, where ${p\in(1,2]}$ and ${s\in(1+1/p,2)}$. This is achieved by showing that the mathematical model can be formulated as a quasilinear parabolic evolution problem in $W^{\overline{s}-2}_p(\mathbb{R})$, where ${\overline{s}\in(1+1/p,s)}$. Moreover, we prove that the solutions become instantly smooth and we provide a criterion for the global existence of solutions.

Well-posedness and stability results for a quasilinear periodic Muskat problem

We study the Muskat problem describing the spatially periodic motion of two fluids with equal viscosities under the effect of gravity in a vertical unbounded two-dimensional geometry. We first prove that the classical formulation of the problem is equivalent to a nonlocal and nonlinear evolution equation expressed in terms of singular integrals and having only the interface between the fluids as unknown. Secondly, we show that this evolution equation has a quasilinear structure, which is at a formal level not obvious, and we also disclose the parabolic character of the equation. Exploiting these aspects, we establish the local well-posedness of the problem for arbitrary initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{S})$, with $s\in(3/2,2)$, determine a new criterion for the global existence of solutions, and uncover a parabolic smoothing property. Besides, we prove that the zero steady-state solution is exponentially stable.

On the particle motion in geophysical deep water waves traveling over uniform currents

We describe a family of exact Gerstner type solutions for the geophysical equatorial deep water wave problem in the f-plane approximation. These Gerstner type waves are two-dimensional and travel with constant speed over a uniform horizontal current. The particle paths in the presence and absence of the Coriolis force are also analyzed in dependence of the current strength.

On periodic water waves with Coriolis effects and isobaric streamlines

In this paper we prove that solutions of the f-plane approximation for equatorial geophysical deep water waves, which have the property that the pressure is constant along the streamlines and do not possess stagnation points, are Gerstner-type waves. Furthermore, for waves traveling over a flat bed, we prove that there are only laminar flow solutions with these properties.

On the well-posedness of a mathematical model describing water-mud interaction

In this paper we consider a mathematical model describing the two-phase interaction between water and mud in a water canal when the width of the canal is small compared to its depth. The mud is treated as a non-Netwonian fluid and the interface between the mud and fluid is allowed to move under the influence of gravity and surface tension. We reduce the mathematical formulation, for small boundary and initial data, to a fully nonlocal and nonlinear problem and prove its local well-posedness by using abstract parabolic theory.

Steady internal water waves with a critical layer bounded by the wave surface

In this paper we construct small amplitude periodic internal waves traveling at the boundary region between two rotational and homogeneous fluids with different densities. Within a period, the waves we obtain have the property that the gradient of the stream function associated to the fluid beneath the interface vanishes, on the wave surface, at exactly two points. Furthermore, there exists a critical layer which is bounded from above by the wave profile. Besides, we prove, without excluding the presence of stagnation points, that if the vorticity function associated to each fluid in part is real-analytic, bounded, and non-increasing, then capillary-gravity steady internal waves are a priori real-analytic. Our new method provides the real-analyticity of capillary and capillary-gravity waves with stagnation points traveling over a homogeneous rotational fluid under the same restrictions on the vorticity function.

On particle trajectories in linear deep-water waves

We determine the phase portrait of a Hamiltonian system of equations describing the motion of the particles in linear deep-water waves. The particles experience in each period a forward drift which decreases with greater depth.

Analysis of a mathematical model describing necrotic tumor growth

In this paper we study a model describing the growth of necrotic tumors in different regimes of vascularisation. The tumor consists of a necrotic core of death cells and a surrounding nonnecrotic shell. The corresponding mathematical formulation is a moving boundary problem where both boundaries delimiting the nonnecrotic shell are allowed to evolve in time.We determine all radially symmetric stationary solutions of the problem and reduce the moving boundary problem into a nonlinear evolution. Parabolic theory provides us the perfect context in order to show local well-posed of the problem for small initial data.

A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition for the Muskat problem

In this paper we consider the evolution of two fluid phases in a porous medium. The fluids are separated from each other and also the wetting phase from air by interfaces which evolve in time. We reduce the problem to an abstract evolution equation. A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition characterizes the parabolicity regime of the problem and allows us to establish a general well-posedness result and to study stability properties of flat steady-states. When considering surface tension effects at the interface between the fluids and if the more dense fluid lies above, we find bifurcating finger-shaped equilibria which are all unstable.

Bifurcation analysis for a free boundary problem modeling tumor growth

In this paper we deal with a free boundary problem modeling the growth of nonnecrotic tumors. The tumor is treated as an incompressible fluid, the tissue elasticity is neglected and no chemical inhibitor species are present. We re-express the mathematical model as an operator equation and by using a bifurcation argument we prove that there exist stationary solutions of the problem which are not radially symmetric.

Well-posedness and stability analysis for a moving boundary problem modelling the growth of nonnecrotic tumors

We study a moving boundary problem describing the growth of nonnecrotic tumors in different regimes of vascularisation. This model consists of two decoupled Dirichlet problem, one for the rate at which nutrient is added to the tumor domain and one for the pressure inside the tumor. These variables are coupled by a relation which describes the dynamic of the boundary. By re-expressing the problem as an abstract evolution equation, we prove local well-posedness in the small Hoelder spaces context. Further on, we use the principle of linearised stability to characterise the stability properties of the unique radially symmetric equilibrium of the problem.
