Output Feedback MPC with Adaptive Tubes

An output feedback model predictive control (MPC) framework with adaptive tubes is proposed for linear time-invariant systems subject to parametric and additive uncertainties. An adaptive observer provides point estimates of the system state, model parameters, and initial condition, while jointly updating the corresponding sets containing the true parameters and initial state. These estimates parameterize the constrained optimal control problem, enabling constraint tightening, terminal ingredients, and tube geometry to be updated as the estimates evolve. In contrast to standard robust tube-based MPC formulations, the proposed approach does not require a common quadratically stabilizing linear feedback gain across the parametric uncertainty set. As the available uncertainty information improves, the tube geometry evolves accordingly, resulting in an adaptive tube MPC framework with improved performance over time. Recursive feasibility and robust exponential stability are established, and a numerical example is presented.

Adaptive Tube MPC: Beyond a Common Quadratically Stabilizing Feedback Gain

This paper proposes an adaptive tube framework for model predictive control (MPC) of discrete-time linear time-invariant systems subject to parametric uncertainty and additive disturbances. In contrast to conventional tube-based MPC schemes that employ fixed tube geometry and constraint tightening designed for worst-case uncertainty, the proposed approach incorporates online parameter learning to progressively refine the parametric uncertainty set and update the parameter estimates. These updates are used to adapt the components of the MPC optimization problem, including the prediction model, feedback gain, terminal set, and tube cross-sections. As the uncertainty set contracts, the required amount of constraint tightening reduces and the tube shrinks accordingly, yielding less conservative control actions. Recursive feasibility, robust constraint satisfaction, and closed-loop stability are formally established. Furthermore, the framework does not require the existence of a common quadratically stabilizing linear feedback gain for the entire parametric uncertainty set, thereby relaxing a standard assumption in existing tube-based MPC formulations. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Initial Excitation-based Adaptive Observers for Discrete-Time LTI Systems

In practical applications, the efficacy of a control algorithm relies critically on the accurate knowledge of the parameters and states of the underlying system. However, obtaining these quantities in practice is often challenging. Adaptive observers address this issue by performing simultaneous state and parameter estimation using only input-output measurements. While many adaptive observer designs exist for continuous-time systems, their discrete-time counterparts remain relatively unexplored. This paper proposes an initial excitation (IE)-based adaptive observer for discrete-time linear time-invariant systems. In contrast to conventional designs that rely on the persistence of excitation condition, which requires continuous excitation and infinite control effort, the proposed method does not require excitation for infinite time, thus making it more practical for stabilization tasks. We employ a two-layer filtering structure and a normalized gradient descent-based update law for learning the unknown parameters. We also propose modifying the regressors to enhance information extraction, leading to faster convergence. Rigorous theoretical analysis guarantees bounded and exponentially converging estimates of both states and parameters under the IE condition, and simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed design.

Adaptive Output Feedback MPC with Guaranteed Stability and Robustness

This work proposes an adaptive output feedback model predictive control (MPC) framework for uncertain systems subject to external disturbances. In the absence of exact knowledge about the plant parameters and complete state measurements, the MPC optimization problem is reformulated in terms of their estimates derived from a suitably designed robust adaptive observer. The MPC routine returns a homothetic tube for the state estimate trajectory. Sets that characterize the state estimation errors are then added to the homothetic tube sections, resulting in a larger tube containing the true state trajectory. The two-tier tube architecture provides robustness to uncertainties due to imperfect parameter knowledge, external disturbances, and incomplete state information. Additionally, recursive feasibility and robust exponential stability are guaranteed and validated using a numerical example.

Computation of Maximal Admissible Robust Positive Invariant Sets for Linear Systems with Parametric and Additive Uncertainties

In this paper, we address the problem of computing the maximal admissible robust positive invariant (MARPI) set for discrete-time linear time-varying systems with parametric uncertainties and additive disturbances. The system state and input are subjected to hard constraints, and the system parameters and the exogenous disturbance are assumed to belong to known convex polytopes. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the non-empty MARPI set, and explore relevant features of the set that lead to an efficient finite-time converging algorithm with a suitable stopping criterion. The analysis hinges on backward reachable sets defined using recursively computed halfspaces and the minimal RPI set. A numerical example is used to validate the theoretical development.

Adaptive Observers for MIMO Discrete-Time LTI Systems

In this paper, an adaptive observer is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) discrete-time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. Unlike existing MIMO adaptive observer designs, the proposed approach is applicable to LTI systems in their general form. Further, the proposed method uses recursive least square (RLS) with covariance resetting for adaptation that is shown to guarantee that the estimates are bounded, irrespective of any excitation condition, even in the presence of a vanishing perturbation term in the error used for updation in RLS. Detailed analysis for convergence and boundedness has been provided along with simulation results for illustrating the performance of the developed theory.

Adaptive Output Feedback Model Predictive Control

Model predictive control (MPC) for uncertain systems in the presence of hard constraints on state and input is a non-trivial problem, and the challenge is increased manyfold in the absence of state measurements. In this paper, we propose an adaptive output feedback MPC technique, based on a novel combination of an adaptive observer and robust MPC, for single-input single-output discrete-time linear time-invariant systems. At each time instant, the adaptive observer provides estimates of the states and the system parameters that are then leveraged in the MPC optimization routine while robustly accounting for the estimation errors. The solution to the optimization problem results in a homothetic tube where the state estimate trajectory lies. The true state evolves inside a larger outer tube obtained by augmenting a set, invariant to the state estimation error, around the homothetic tube sections. The proof for recursive feasibility for the proposed `homothetic and invariant' two-tube approach is provided, along with simulation results on an academic system.
