Hypergraphs with minimum positive uniform Turán density

Reiher, Rödl and Schacht [J. London Math. Soc. 97 (2018), 77--97] showed that the uniform Turán density of every $3$-uniform hypergraph is either $0$ or at least $1/27$, and asked whether there exist $3$-uniform hypergraphs with uniform Turán density equal or arbitrarily close to $1/27$. We construct $3$-uniform hypergraphs with uniform Turán density equal to $1/27$.

Quasirandom Latin squares

We prove a conjecture by Garbe et al. [arXiv:2010.07854] by showing that a Latin square is quasirandom if and only if the density of every 2x3 pattern is 1/720+o(1). This result is the best possible in the sense that 2x3 cannot be replaced with 2x2 or 1xN for any N.

Coloring graphs by translates in the circle

The fractional and circular chromatic numbers are the two most studied non-integral refinements of the chromatic number of a graph. Starting from the definition of a coloring base of a graph, which originated in work related to ergodic theory, we formalize the notion of a gyrocoloring of a graph: the vertices are colored by translates of a single Borel set in the circle group, and neighbouring vertices receive disjoint translates. The corresponding gyrochromatic number of a graph always lies between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We investigate basic properties of gyrocolorings. In particular, we construct examples of graphs whose gyrochromatic number is strictly between the fractional chromatic number and the circular chromatic number. We also establish several equivalent definitions of the gyrochromatic number, including a version involving all finite abelian groups.

Ramsey upper density of infinite graph factors

The study of upper density problems on Ramsey theory was initiated by Erdős and Galvin in 1993. In this paper we are concerned with the following problem: given a fixed finite graph $F$, what is the largest value of $λ$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of the complete graph on $\mathbb{N}$ contains a monochromatic infinite $F$-factor whose vertex set has upper density at least $λ$? Here we prove a new lower bound for this problem. For some choices of $F$, including cliques and odd cycles, this new bound is sharp, as it matches an older upper bound. For the particular case where $F$ is a triangle, we also give an explicit lower bound of $1-\frac{1}{\sqrt{7}}=0.62203\dots$, improving the previous best bound of 3/5.

Finding unavoidable colorful patterns in multicolored graphs

We provide multicolored and infinite generalizations for a Ramsey-type problem raised by Bollobás, concerning colorings of $K_n$ where each color is well-represented. Let $χ$ be a coloring of the edges of a complete graph on $n$ vertices into $r$ colors. We call $χ$ $\varepsilon$-balanced if all color classes have $\varepsilon$ fraction of the edges. Fix some graph $H$, together with an $r$-coloring of its edges. Consider the smallest natural number $R_\varepsilon^r(H)$ such that for all $n\geq R_\varepsilon^r(H)$, all $\varepsilon$-balanced colorings $χ$ of $K_n$ contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$ in its coloring. Bollobás conjectured a simple characterization of $H$ for which $R_\varepsilon^2(H)$ is finite, which was later proved by Cutler and Montágh. Here, we obtain a characterization for arbitrary values of $r$, as well as asymptotically tight bounds. We also discuss generalizations to graphs defined on perfect Polish spaces, where the corresponding notion of balancedness is each color class being non-meagre.

On a colored Turán problem of Diwan and Mubayi

Suppose that $R$ (red) and $B$ (blue) are two graphs on the same vertex set of size $n$, and $H$ is some graph with a red-blue coloring of its edges. How large can $R$ and $B$ be if $R\cup B$ does not contain a copy of $H$? Call the largest such integer $\mathrm{mex}(n, H)$. This problem was introduced by Diwan and Mubayi, who conjectured that (except for a few specific exceptions) when $H$ is a complete graph on $k+1$ vertices with any coloring of its edges $\mathrm{mex}(n,H)=\mathrm{ex}(n, K_{k+1})$. This conjecture generalizes Turán's theorem. Diwan and Mubayi also asked for an analogue of Erdős-Stone-Simonovits theorem in this context. We prove the following asymptotic characterization of the extremal threshold in terms of the chromatic number $χ(H)$ and the \textit{reduced maximum matching number} $\mathcal{M}(H)$ of $H$. $$\mathrm{mex}(n, H)=\left(1- \frac{1}{2(χ(H)-1)} - Ω\left(\frac{\mathcal{M}(H)}{χ(H)^2}\right)\right)\frac{n^2}{2}.$$ $\mathcal{M}(H)$ is, among the set of proper $χ(H)$-colorings of $H$, the largest set of disjoint pairs of color classes where each pair is connected by edges of just a single color. The result is also proved for more than $2$ colors and is tight up to the implied constant factor. We also study $\mathrm{mex}(n, H)$ when $H$ is a cycle with a red-blue coloring of its edges, and we show that $\mathrm{mex}(n, H)\lesssim \frac{1}{2}\binom{n}{2}$, which is tight.

Ramsey upper density of infinite graphs

For a fixed infinite graph $H$, we study the largest density of a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H$ that can be found in every two-coloring of the edges of $K_{\mathbb{N}}$. This is called the Ramsey upper density of $H$, and was introduced by Erdős and Galvin. Recently, the Ramsey upper density of the infinite path was determined. Here, we find the value of this density for all locally finite graphs $H$ up to a factor of 2, answering a question of DeBiasio and McKenney. We also find the exact density for a wide class of bipartite graphs, including all locally finite forests. Our approach relates this problem to the solution of an optimization problem for continuous functions. We show that, under certain conditions, the density depends only on the chromatic number of $H$, the number of components of $H$, and the expansion ratio $|N(I)|/|I|$ of the independent sets of $H$.

Majority Colorings of Sparse Digraphs

A majority coloring of a directed graph is a vertex-coloring in which every vertex has the same color as at most half of its out-neighbors. Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood proved that every digraph has a majority 4-coloring and conjectured that every digraph admits a majority 3-coloring. We verify this conjecture for digraphs with chromatic number at most 6 or dichromatic number at most 3. We obtain analogous results for list coloring: We show that every digraph with list chromatic number at most 6 or list dichromatic number at most 3 is majority 3-choosable. We deduce that digraphs with maximum out-degree at most 4 or maximum degree at most 7 are majority 3-choosable. On the way to these results we investigate digraphs admitting a majority 2-coloring. We show that every digraph without odd directed cycles is majority 2-choosable. We answer an open question posed by Kreutzer et al. negatively, by showing that deciding whether a given digraph is majority 2-colorable is NP-complete. Finally we deal with a fractional relaxation of majority coloring proposed by Kreutzer et al. and show that every digraph has a fractional majority 3.9602-coloring. We show that every digraph with minimum out-degree $Ω\left((1/\varepsilon)^2\ln(1/\varepsilon)\right)$ has a fractional majority $(2+\varepsilon)$-coloring.

Upper density of monochromatic infinite paths

We prove that in every $2$-colouring of the edges of $K_\mathbb{N}$ there exists a monochromatic infinite path $P$ such that $V(P)$ has upper density at least ${(12+\sqrt{8})}/{17} \approx 0.87226$ and further show that this is best possible. This settles a problem of Erdős and Galvin.

The random strategy in Maker-Breaker graph minor games

In a $(1:b)$ biased Maker-Breaker game, how good a strategy is for a player can be measured by the bias range for which its rival can win, choosing an appropriate counterstrategy. Bednarska and Łuczak proved that, in the $H$-subgraph game, the uniformly random strategy for Maker is essentially optimal with high probability. Here we prove an analogous result for the $H$-graph minor game, and we study for which choices of $H$ the random strategy is within a factor of $1+o(1)$ of being optimal.

A Note on the Minimum Number of Edges in Hypergraphs with Property O

An oriented $k$-uniform hypergraph is said to have Property O if for every linear order of the vertex set, there is some edge oriented consistently with the linear order. Recently Duffus, Kay and Rödl investigated the minimum number $f(k)$ of edges in a $k$-uniform hypergaph with Property O. They proved that $k! \leq f(k) \leq (k^2 \ln k) k!$, where the upper bound holds for $k$ sufficiently large. In this short note we improve their upper bound by a factor of $k \ln k$, showing that $f(k) \le \left(\lfloor \frac{k}{2} \rfloor +1 \right) k! - \lfloor \frac{k}{2} \rfloor (k-1)!$ for every $k\geq 3$. We also show that their lower bound is not tight. Furthermore, Duffus, Kay and Rödl also studied the minimum number $n(k)$ of vertices in a $k$-uniform hypergaph with Property O. For $k=3$ they showed $n(3) \in \{6,7,8,9\}$, and asked for the precise value of $n(3)$. Here we show $n(3)=6$.
