A proposal for the role of higher spin fields in Conformal Cyclic Cosmology

This paper proposes a research program into how the special properties of the cubic chiral higher spin gravity theory may play a role in conformal cyclic cosmology and black hole physics, in particular for the black hole information paradox. The paper is qualitative, raising a number of questions and connections, that may be interesting to pursue in more detail. The proposal is based on a new -- at least not so commonly expressed -- view on the presumptive role of higher spin gauge fields in fundamental physics. In short, it is proposed that the non-unitary time evolution of the cubic chiral higher spin gravity theory is precisely what is needed for bridging the very large entropy gap between aeons in Roger Penrose's cosmological theory CCC.

Investigations into Light-front Quartic Interactions for Massless Fields (I): Non-constructibility of Higher Spin Quartic Amplitudes

The dynamical commutators of the light-front Poincaré algebra yield first order differential equations in the $p^+$ momenta for the interaction vertex operators. The homogeneous solution to the equation for the quartic vertex is studied. Consequences as regards the constructibility assumption of quartic higher spin amplitudes from cubic amplitudes are discussed. The existence of quartic contact interactions unrelated to cubic interactions by Poincaré symmetry indicates that the higher spin S-matrix is not constructible. Thus quartic amplitude based no-go results derived by BCFW recursion for Minkowski higher spin massless fields may be circumvented.

Systematics of Higher-spin Light-front Interactions

The original cubic interaction terms for higher spin gauge fields in four dimensions and their reformulation using Fock space vertex operators is reviewed. As a new result, the complete list of all cubic vertex functions in D=4 is derived. It is observed, contrary to what would have been expected, that the non-linear dynamical Poincaré transformations do not restrict the cubic interactions beyond what is required by kinematics. The role of the SU(1,1) algebra of tracelessness constraints is clarified. It is shown that higher spin fields couple non-minimally to gravity at the cubic level in D=4 light-front dynamics. Based on a detailed analysis of the structure of the light-front Poincaré algebra, the formalism is then generalized to all orders in the interaction. The interacting theory, being a deformation of the free theory, takes the form of a strongly homotopy Lie algebra. It is conjectured that the ensuing recursive equations, if they can be explicitly solved, will encode all interaction data into a denumerable set of functions of p+, the overall transverse momentum structure being fixed already at the kinematical level.

Quartic amplitudes for Minkowski higher spin

The problem of finding general quartic interaction terms between fields of higher helicities on the light-front is discussed from the point of view of calculating the corresponding amplitudes directly from the cubic vertices using BCFW recursion. Amplitude based no-go results that has appeared in the literature are reviewed and discussed and it is pointed out how they may perhaps be circumvented.

Notes on Cubic and Quartic Light-Front Kinematics

The purpose of this short note is to collect a set of formulas pertaining to momentum kinematics for higher spin light-front vertices. At least one of the formulas seems to be previously unknown.

A Riccati type PDE for light-front higher helicity vertices

This paper is based on a curious observation about an equation related to the tracelessness constraints of higher spin gauge fields. The equation also occurs in the theory of continuous spin representations of the Poincaré group. Expressed in an oscillator basis for the higher spin fields, the equation becomes a non-linear partial differential operator of the Riccati type acting on the vertex functions. The consequences of the equation for the cubic vertex is investigated in the light-front formulation of higher spin theory. The classical vertex is completely fixed but there is room for off-shell quantum corrections.

BRST Theory for Continuous Spin

Some puzzling aspects of higher spin field theory in Minkowski space-time, such as the tracelessness constraints and the search for an underlying physical principle, are discussed. A connecting idea might be provided by the recently much researched continuous spin representations of the Poincaré group. The Wigner equations, treated as first class constraints, yields to a four-constraint BRST formulation. The resulting field theory, generalizing free higher spin field theory, is one among a set of higher spin theories that can be related to previous work on unconstrained formulations. In particular, it is conjectured that the unconstrained higher spin theory of Francia and Sagnotti is a limit of a continuous spin theory. Furthermore, a simple analysis of the constraint structure reveals a hint of a physical rationale behind the trace constraints.

Counterterms in Gravity in the Light-Front Formulation and a D=2 Conformal-like Symmetry in Gravity

In this paper we discuss gravity in the light-front formulation (light-cone gauge) and show how possible counterterms arise. We find that Poincare invariance is not enough to find the three-point counterterms uniquely. Higher-spin fields can intrude and mimic three-point higher derivative gravity terms. To select the correct term we have to use the remaining reparametrization invariance that exists after the gauge choice. We finally sketch how the corresponding programme for N=8 Supergravity should work.

Mechanical Models for Higher Spin Gauge Fields

Returning to an old idea of a certain two-particle relativistic harmonic oscillator as an underlying mechanical model for higher spin gauge fields, various space-time pictures are discussed for the propagation and the interactions.

Towards Unifying Structures in Higher Spin Gauge Symmetry

This article is expository in nature, outlining some of the many still incompletely understood features of higher spin field theory. We are mainly considering higher spin gauge fields in their own right as free-standing theoretical constructs and not circumstances where they occur as part of another system. Considering the problem of introducing interactions among higher spin gauge fields, there has historically been two broad avenues of approach. One approach entails gauging a non-Abelian global symmetry algebra, in the process making it local. The other approach entails deforming an already local but Abelian gauge algebra, in the process making it non-Abelian. In cases where both avenues have been explored, such as for spin 1 and 2 gauge fields, the results agree (barring conceptual and technical issues) with Yang-Mills theory and Einstein gravity. In the case of an infinite tower of higher spin gauge fields, the first approach has been thoroughly developed and explored by M. Vasiliev, whereas the second approach, after having lain dormant for a long time, has received new attention by several authors lately. In the present paper we briefly review some aspects of the history of higher spin gauge fields as a backdrop to an attempt at comparing the gauging vs. deforming approaches. A common unifying structure of strongly homotopy Lie algebras underlying both approaches will be discussed. The modern deformation approach, using BRST-BV methods, will be described as far as it is developed at the present time. The first steps of a formulation in the categorical language of operads will be outlined. A few aspects of the subject that seems not to have been thoroughly investigated are pointed out.

Structure of Higher Spin Gauge Interactions

In a previous paper, higher spin gauge field theory was formulated in an abstract way, essentially only keeping enough machinery to discuss "gauge invariance" of an "action". The approach could be thought of as providing an interface (or syntax) towards an implementation (or semantics) yet to be constructed. The structure then revealed turns out to be that of a strongly homotopy Lie algebra. In the present paper, the framework will be connected to more conventional field theoretic concepts. The Fock complex vertex operator implementation of the interactions in the BRST-BV formulation of the theory will be elaborated. The relation between the vertex order expansion and homological perturbation theory will be clarified. A formal non-obstruction argument is reviewed. The syntactically derived sh-Lie algebra structure is semantically mapped to the Fock complex implementation and it is shown that the recursive equations governing the higher order vertices are reproduced. Global symmetries and subsidiary conditions are discussed and as a result the tracelessness constraints are discarded. Thus all equations needed to compute the vertices to any order are collected. The framework is general enough to encompass all possible interaction terms. Finally, the abstract framework itself will be strengthened by showing that it can be naturally phrased in terms of the theory of categories.

Quantum Computation: A Computer Science Perspective

The theory of quantum computation is presented in a self contained way from a computer science perspective. The basics of classical computation and quantum mechanics is reviewed. The circuit model of quantum computation is presented in detail. Throughout there is an emphasis on the physical as well as the abstract aspects of computation and the interplay between them. This report is presented as a Master's thesis at the department of Computer Science and Engineering at G{ö}teborg University, G{ö}teborg, Sweden. The text is part of a larger work that is planned to include chapters on quantum algorithms, the quantum Turing machine model and abstract approaches to quantum computation.
