The AKLT model on a hexagonal chain is gapped

In 1987, Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki introduced the AKLT spin chain and proved that it has a spectral gap above the ground state. Their concurrent conjecture that the two-dimensional AKLT model on the hexagonal lattice is also gapped remains open. In this paper, we show that the AKLT Hamiltonian restricted to an arbitrarily long chain of hexagons is gapped. The argument is based on explicitly verifying a finite-size criterion which is tailor-made for the system at hand. We also discuss generalizations of the method to the full hexagonal lattice.

Dynamic scaling of the restoration of rotational symmetry in Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnets

We apply imaginary-time evolution, ${\rm e}^{-τH}$, to study relaxation dynamics of gapless quantum antiferromagnets described by the spin-rotation invariant Heisenberg Hamiltonian ($H$). Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we propagate an initial state with maximal order parameter $m^z_s$ (the staggered magnetization) in the $z$ spin direction and monitor the expectation value $\langle m^z_s\rangle $ as a function of the time $τ$. Different system sizes of lengths $L$ exhibit an initial size-independent relaxation of $\langle m^z_s\rangle$ toward its value the spontaneously symmetry-broken state, followed by a size-dependent final decay to zero. We develop a generic finite-size scaling theory which shows that the relaxation time diverges asymptotically as $L^z$ where $z$ is the dynamic exponent of the low energy excitations. We use the scaling theory to develop a way of extracting the dynamic exponent from the numerical finite-size data. We apply the method to spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets on two different lattice geometries; the two-dimensional (2D) square lattice as well as a site-diluted square lattice at the percolation threshold. In the 2D case we obtain $z=2.001(5)$, which is consistent with the known value $z=2$, while for the site-dilutes lattice we find $z=3.90(1)$. This is an improvement on previous estimates of $z\approx 3.7$. The scaling results also show a fundamental difference between the two cases: In the 2D system the data can be collapsed onto a common scaling function even when $\langle m^z_s\rangle$ is relatively large, reflecting the Anderson tower of quantum rotor states with a common dynamic exponent $z=2$. For the diluted lattice, the scaling works only for small $\langle m^z_s\rangle$, indicating a mixture of different relaxation time scaling between the low energy states.

The amplitude mode in three-dimensional dimerized antiferromagnets

The amplitude (Higgs) mode is a ubiquitous collective excitation related to spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry. We combine quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations with stochastic analytic continuation to investigate the dynamics of the amplitude mode in a three-dimensional dimerized quantum spin system. We characterize this mode by calculating the spin and dimer spectral functions near the quantum critical point, finding that both the energies and the intrinsic widths satisfy field-theoretical scaling predictions. While the line width of the spin response is close to that observed in neutron scattering experiments on TlCuCl$_3$, the dimer response is significantly broader. Our results demonstrate that highly non-trivial dynamical properties are accessible by modern QMC and analytic continuation methods.

Magnetic Raman Scattering in Two-Dimensional Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnets: Spectral Shape Anomaly and Magnetostrictive Effects

We calculate the Raman spectrum of the two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet by exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo techniques on clusters of up to 144 sites and, on a 16-site cluster, by considering the phonon-magnon interaction which leads to random fluctuations of the exchange integral. Results are in good agreement with experiments on various high-T_c precursors, such as La_2CuO_4 and YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.2}. In particular, our calculations reproduce the broad lineshape of the two-magnon peak, the asymmetry about its maximum, the existence of spectral weight at high energies, and the observation of nominally forbidden A_{1g} scattering.
