Time-Dependent Integrability from Gauge Theory, I

Solvable time-dependent systems provide important settings for studying non-equilibrium physics, where exact results are rare. They are also useful for benchmarking quantum simulations, which can directly probe real-time dynamics beyond the reach of conventional numerical approaches. In this paper, we show that the four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory offers a natural and unifying framework for constructing such systems. Focusing on classically integrable field theories, we consider a generalization of the four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory in which the usual holomorphic one-form is replaced by a more general, spacetime-dependent one-form. This yields a systematic procedure for generating time-dependent integrable field theories and establishes a universal relation: for every theory obtained in this way, the allowed time dependence coincides with the one-loop renormalization group flow. Despite the explicit time dependence, these theories retain Lax integrability and remain solvable by inverse scattering methods. Our construction applies to both ultralocal and non-ultralocal theories and extends previously known time-dependent sigma models to a much broader class of integrable systems. It also admits rewriting as dilaton gravity coupled to matter, producing a large family of classically integrable dilaton gravity theories in two dimensions. We also comment on connections to time-dependent integrable models studied recently in condensed matter physics and non-autonomous integrable systems arising from dimensionally-reduced Einstein gravity.

Crosscap Defects

We introduce a novel class of defects, termed crosscap defects, in conformal field theory (CFT) in general dimensions. These arise from quotienting the spacetime by a $Z_2$ automorphism, and provide higher-codimension generalisations of CFT on real projective space ($RP^{d}$). Crosscap defects extend along a $p$-dimensional fixed locus of the $Z_2$ action and preserve an $SO(p+1,1)\times PO(d-p)$ subgroup of the conformal group. The two-point functions of operators in this setup exhibit three operator product expansion channels: bulk, image, and defect. These lead to several crosscap crossing equations, which we present. We analyse conformal block decompositions and show that the blocks are identical to defect CFT blocks up to a redefinition of cross ratios. As concrete examples, we study crosscap defects in the $O(N)$ model at the Gaussian and Wilson--Fisher fixed points in the $\varepsilon$-expansion. We compute explicitly the associated CFT data as a function of $p$ and find that, unlike standard defects, displacement and tilt operators are absent for generic $p$. They provide examples of defect conformal manifolds without exactly marginal operators.

1-loop renormalisability of integrable sigma-models from 4d Chern-Simons theory

Large families of integrable 2d sigma-models have been constructed at the classical level, partly motivated by the utility of integrability on the string worldsheet. It is natural to ask whether these theories are renormalisable at the quantum level, and whether they define quantum integrable field theories. By considering examples, a folk theorem has emerged: the classically integrable sigma-models always turn out to be renormalisable, at least at 1-loop order. We prove this theorem for a large class of models engineered on surface defects in the 4d Chern-Simons theory by Costello and Yamazaki. We derive the flow of the 'twist 1-form' (a 4d coupling constant that distinguishes different 2d models), proving earlier conjectures and extending previous results. Our approach is general, using the 'universal' form of 2d integrable models' UV divergences in terms of their Lax connection and reinterpreting the result in the language of 4d Chern-Simons. These results apply equally to rational, trigonometric and elliptic models.

An elliptic integrable deformation of the Principal Chiral Model

We introduce a new elliptic integrable $σ$-model in the form of a two-parameter deformation of the Principal Chiral Model on the group $\text{SL}_{\mathbb{R}}(N)$, generalising a construction of Cherednik for $N=2$ (up to reality conditions). We exhibit the Lax connection and $\mathcal{R}$-matrix of this theory, which depend meromorphically on a spectral parameter valued in the torus. Furthermore, we explain the origin of this model from an equivariant semi-holomorphic 4-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on the torus. This approach opens the way for the construction of a large class of elliptic integrable $σ$-models, with the deformed Principal Chiral Model as the simplest example.

Geometry of the spectral parameter and renormalisation of integrable $σ$-models

In the past few years, the unifying frameworks of 4-dimensional Chern-Simons theory and affine Gaudin models have allowed for the systematic construction of a large family of integrable $σ$-models. These models depend on the data of a Riemann surface $C$ (here of genus 0 or 1) and of a meromorphic 1-form $ω$ on $C$, which encodes the geometry of their spectral parameter and the analytic structure of their Lax connection. The main subject of this paper is the renormalisation of these theories and in particular two conjectures describing their 1-loop RG-flow in terms of the 1-form $ω$. These conjectures were put forward in [2010.07879] and [2106.09781] and were proven in a variety of cases. After extending the proposal of [2010.07879] to the elliptic setup (with $C$ of genus 1), we establish the equivalence of these two conjectures and discuss some of their applications. Moreover, we check their veracity on an explicit example, namely an integrable elliptic deformation of the Principal Chiral Model on $\text{SL}_N(\mathbb{R})$.

Socially Intelligent Interfaces for Increased Energy Awareness in the Home

This paper describes how home appliances might be enhanced to improve user awareness of energy usage. Households wish to lead comfortable and manageable lives. Balancing this reasonable desire with the environmental and political goal of reducing electricity usage is a challenge that we claim is best met through the design of interfaces that allows users better control of their usage and unobtrusively informs them of the actions of their peers. A set of design principles along these lines is formulated in this paper. We have built a fully functional prototype home appliance with a socially aware interface to signal the aggregate usage of the users peer group according to these principles, and present the prototype in the paper.
