Polynomiality of the Striling coefficients of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$ and Fano schemes

We prove that the $d$-dependence of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$, the Chern class of the $\mathrm{GL}(n)$-representation of degree $d$ homogeneous polynomials in $n$ complex variables is polynomial. We also study the asymptotics of the polynomial $d$-dependence of this Chern class. We apply these results to solve a conjecture of Manivel on the degree of varieties of hypersurfaces containing linear subspaces. We also prove new formulas for the degree and Euler characteristics of Fano schemes of lines for generic hypersurfaces. To prove the polynomial dependence of $c(\mathrm{Pol}^d(\mathbb{C}^n))$ we introduce the notion of Striling coefficients. This can be considered as a generalization of Stirling numbers. We express the Stirling coefficients in terms of specializations of monomial symmetric polynomials so we can deduce their polynomiality and, in certain cases, their asymptotic behaviour.

Plücker formulas using equivariant cohomology of coincident root strata

We give a new method to calculate the universal cohomology classes of coincident root loci. We show a polynomial behavior of them and apply this result to prove that generalized Plücker formulas are polynomials in the degree, just as the classical Plücker formulas counting the bitangents and flexes of a degree $d$ generic plane curve. We establish an upper bound for the degrees of these polynomials, and we calculate the leading terms of those whose degrees reach this upper bound. We believe that the paper is understandable without detailed knowledge of equivariant cohomology. It may serve as a demonstration of the use of equivariant cohomology in enumerative geometry through the examples of coincident root strata. We also explain how the equivariant method can be "translated" into the traditional non-equivariant method of resolutions.

Leading terms of generalized Plücker formulas

Generalized Plücker numbers are defined to count certain types of tangent lines of generic degree $d$ complex projective hypersurfaces. They can be computed by identifying them as coefficients of GL(2)-equivariant cohomology classes of certain invariant subspaces, the so-called coincident root strata, of the vector space of homogeneous degree $d$ complex polynomials in two variables. In an earlier paper László M. Fehér and the author gave a new, recursive method for calculating these classes. Using this method, we showed that -- similarly to the classical Plücker formulas counting the bitangents and flex lines of a degree $d$ plane curve -- generalized Plücker numbers are polynomials in the degree $d$. In this paper, by further analyzing our recursive formula, we determine the leading terms of all the generalized Plücker formulas.
