Topological G$_{2}$ and Spin(7) strings at 1-loop from double complexes

We study the topological $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ strings at 1-loop. We define new double complexes for supersymmetric NSNS backgrounds of string theory using generalised geometry. The 1-loop partition function then has a target-space interpretation as a particular alternating product of determinants of Laplacians, which we have dubbed the analytic torsion. In the case without flux where these backgrounds have special holonomy, we reproduce the worldsheet calculation of the $G_2$ string and give a new prediction for the $Spin(7)$ string. We also comment on connections with topological strings on Calabi-Yau and K3 backgrounds.

Higher curvature Bianchi identities, generalised geometry and $L_{\infty}$ algebras

The Bianchi identities for bosonic fluxes in supergravity can receive higher derivative quantum and string corrections, the most well known being that of Heterotic theory $d H = \tfrac{1}{4}α'(\text{tr } F^2 - \text{tr } R^2)$. Less studied are the modifications at order $R^4$ that may arise, for example, in the Bianchi identity for the seven-form flux of M theory compactifications. We argue that such corrections appear to be incompatible with the exceptional generalised geometry description of the lower order supergravity, and seem to imply a gauge algebra for the bosonic potentials that cannot be written in terms of an (exceptional) Courant bracket. However, we show that this algebra retains the form of an $L_{\infty}$ gauge field theory, which terminates at a level ten multibracket for the case involving just the seven-form flux.

Supersymmetric AdS backgrounds and weak generalised holonomy

We study supersymmetric AdS$_D$ backgrounds of eleven-dimensional or type II supergravity preserving $\mathcal{N}$ supersymmetries using generalised geometry. We show that a large class correspond precisely to spaces admitting a generalised $G_{D,\mathcal{N}}$ structure with a weak integrability condition, which we call "weak generalised holonomy". This class contains all such backgrounds with odd $D$, but for even $D$ we must impose a technical assumption concerning the inner products of Killing spinors. It is known that all compact smooth solutions are included, though our analysis is purely local. We show that the Killing superalgebras of such backgrounds are isomorphic to the standard $\mathcal{N}$-extended AdS$_D$ superalgebras, and give a geometric proof of the existence of isometries of the internal spaces which realise the AdS R-symmetry, as often assumed in explicit studies of such solutions.

M-theoretic Lichnerowicz formula and supersymmetry

A suitable generalisation of the Lichnerowicz formula can relate the squares of supersymmetric operators to the effective action, the Bianchi identities for fluxes, and some equations of motion. Recently, such formulae have also been shown to underlie the (generalised) geometry of supersymmetric theories. In this paper, we derive an M-theoretic Lichnerowicz formula that describes eleven-dimensional supergravity together with its higher-derivative couplings. The first corrections to the action appear at eight-derivative level, and the construction yields two different supersymmetric invariants, each with a free coefficient. We discuss the restriction of our construction to seven-dimensional internal spaces, and implications for compactifications on manifolds of $G_2$ holonomy. Inclusion of fluxes and computation of contributions with higher than eight derivatives are also discussed.

Supersymmetric Backgrounds, the Killing Superalgebra, and Generalised Special Holonomy

We prove that, for M theory or type II, generic Minkowski flux backgrounds preserving $\mathcal{N}$ supersymmetries in dimensions $D\geq4$ correspond precisely to integrable generalised $G_{\mathcal{N}}$ structures, where $G_{\mathcal{N}}$ is the generalised structure group defined by the Killing spinors. In other words, they are the analogues of special holonomy manifolds in $E_{d(d)} \times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry. In establishing this result, we introduce the Kosmann-Dorfman bracket, a generalisation of Kosmann's Lie derivative of spinors. This allows us to write down the internal sector of the Killing superalgebra, which takes a rather simple form and whose closure is the key step in proving the main result. In addition, we find that the eleven-dimensional Killing superalgebra of these backgrounds is necessarily the supertranslational part of the $\mathcal{N}$-extended super-Poincaré algebra.

Generalised Structures for $\mathcal{N}=1$ AdS Backgrounds

We expand upon a claim made in a recent paper [arXiv:1411.5721] that generic minimally supersymmetric AdS backgrounds of warped flux compactifications of Type II and M theory can be understood as satisfying a straightforward weak integrability condition in the language of $E_{d(d)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry. Namely, they are spaces admitting a generalised $G$-structure set by the Killing spinor and with constant singlet generalised intrinsic torsion.

Supersymmetric Backgrounds and Generalised Special Holonomy

We define intrinsic torsion in generalised geometry and use it to introduce a new notion of generalised special holonomy. We then consider generic warped supersymmetric flux compactifications of M theory and Type II of the form $\mathbb{R}^{D-1,1}\times M$. Using the language of $E_{d(d)}\times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry, we show that, for $D\geq 4$, preserving minimal supersymmetry is equivalent to the manifold $M$ having generalised special holonomy and list the relevant holonomy groups. We conjecture that this result extends to backgrounds preserving any number of supersymmetries. As a prime example, we consider $\mathcal{N}=1$ in $D=4$. The corresponding generalised special holonomy group is $SU(7)$, giving the natural M theory extension to the notion of a $G_2$ manifold, and, for Type II backgrounds, reformulating the pure spinor $SU(3)\times SU(3)$ conditions as an integrable structure.

Generalised geometry for string corrections

We present a general formalism for incorporating the string corrections in generalised geometry, which necessitates the extension of the generalised tangent bundle. Not only are such extensions obstructed, string symmetries and the existence of a well-defined effective action require a precise choice of the (generalised) connection. The action takes a universal form given by a generalised Lichnerowitz--Bismut theorem. As examples of this construction we discuss the corrections linear in $α'$ in heterotic strings and the absence of such corrections for type II theories.

$E_{d(d)} \times \mathbb{R}^+$ Generalised Geometry, Connections and M theory

We show that generalised geometry gives a unified description of bosonic eleven-dimensional supergravity restricted to a $d$-dimensional manifold for all $d\leq7$. The theory is based on an extended tangent space which admits a natural $E_{d(d)} \times \mathbb{R}^+$ action. The bosonic degrees of freedom are unified as a "generalised metric", as are the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries, while the local $O(d)$ symmetry is promoted to $H_d$, the maximally compact subgroup of $E_{d(d)}$. We introduce the analogue of the Levi--Civita connection and the Ricci tensor and show that the bosonic action and equations of motion are simply given by the generalised Ricci scalar and the vanishing of the generalised Ricci tensor respectively. The formalism also gives a unified description of the bosonic NSNS and RR sectors of type II supergravity in $d-1$ dimensions. Locally the formulation also describes M theory variants of double field theory and we derive the corresponding section condition in general dimension. We comment on the relation to other approaches to M theory with $E_{d(d)}$ symmetry, as well as the connections to flux compactifications and the embedding tensor formalism.

Supergravity as Generalised Geometry II: $E_{d(d)} \times \mathbb{R}^+$ and M theory

We reformulate eleven-dimensional supergravity, including fermions, in terms of generalised geometry, for spacetimes that are warped products of Minkowski space with a $d$-dimensional manifold $M$ with $d\leq7$. The reformation has a $E_{d(d)} \times \mathbb{R}^+$ structure group and is has a local $\tilde{H}_d$ symmetry, where $\tilde{H}_d$ is the double cover of the maximally compact subgroup of $E_{d(d)}$. The bosonic degrees for freedom unify into a generalised metric, and, defining the generalised analogue $D$ of the Levi-Civita connection, one finds that the corresponding equations of motion are the vanishing of the generalised Ricci tensor. To leading order, we show that the fermionic equations of motion, action and supersymmetry variations can all be written in terms of $D$. Although we will not give the detailed decompositions, this reformulation is equally applicable to type IIA or IIB supergravity restricted to a $(d-1)$-dimensional manifold. For completeness we give explicit expressions in terms of $\tilde{H}_4=\mathit{Spin}(5)$ and $\tilde{H}_7=\mathit{SU}(8)$ representations for $d=4$ and $d=7$.

Supergravity as Generalised Geometry I: Type II Theories

We reformulate ten-dimensional type II supergravity as a generalised geometrical analogue of Einstein gravity, defined by an $O(9,1)\times O(1,9)\subset O(10,10)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ structure on the generalised tangent space. Using the notion of generalised connection and torsion, we introduce the analogue of the Levi-Civita connection, and derive the corresponding tensorial measures of generalised curvature. We show how, to leading order in the fermion fields, these structures allow one to rewrite the action, equations of motion and supersymmetry variations in a simple, manifestly $\mathit{Spin}(9,1)\times\mathit{Spin}(1,9)$-covariant form.
