A quantum wire approach to weighted combinatorial graph optimisation problems

Neutral atom arrays provide a versatile platform to implement coherent quantum annealing as an approach to solving hard combinatorial optimization problems. Here we present and experimentally demonstrate an efficient encoding scheme based on chains of Rydberg-blockaded atoms, which we call quantum wires, to natively embed maximum weighted independent set (MWIS) and quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problems on a neutral atom architecture. For graphs with quasi-unit-disk connectivity, in which only a few long-range edges are required, our approach requires a significantly lower overhead in the number of ancilla qubits than previous proposals, facilitating the implementation on currently available hardware. To demonstrate the approach, we perform annealing of weighted graphs on a programmable atom array using local light-shifts to encode problem-specific weights across graphs of varying sizes. This approach successfully identifies the solutions to the original MWIS and QUBO graph instances. Our work expands the operational toolkit of near-term neutral atom arrays, enhancing their potential for scalable quantum optimization.

Reconfigurable circuit for mode tunable topological quantum structured light

Structured light in the quantum regime has garnered considerable attention due to the opportunities it offers when mixing light's internal degrees of freedom, for high-dimensional and multi-dimensional quantum states of light. A popular example is to harness polarisation and spatial entangled photons with a shared topological invariant that is robust against numerous families of noisy quantum channels. Yet, producing such states with high purity and adaptability remains challenging. Here we introduce a compact, self-locking Mach-Zehnder interferometer that integrates digital spatial light modulators with static beam displacers to map spatial-mode entanglement from a parametric down-conversion source onto topological entanglement with high fidelity. The device also mimics the action of a reprogrammable controlled-unitary gate, digitally driven by the spatial light modulator. This approach is an enabling platform and provides a practical route to generating reliable, high-purity quantum-structured light with topological features, both at the single-photon level and as entangled states, a direction of growing topical interest.

Phase conjugation and mode conversion in stimulated parametric down-conversion with orbital angular momentum: a geometrical interpretation

We report on an experiment that investigates the spatial mode conversion in the process of parametric down-conversion seeded by a light beam in a superposition of orbital angular momentum modes. This process is interpreted in terms of a geometric representation of first-order spatial modes in a Poincaré sphere, providing an intuitive image of the phase conjugation and the topological charge conservation. We also make a comparison with the analogous phenomenon for optical parametric oscillators.
