Higher-form (quasi)hydrodynamics from holography: deformations and dualities

We study the low-energy dynamics of systems with exact and approximate higher-form symmetries using Gauge-gravity duality. These symmetries are realised holographically via generalised Maxwell/Proca theories for massless/massive $p$-forms in AlAdS spacetimes. Double-trace deformations of the boundary theory are considered via appropriate boundary conditions. We compute thermal correlation functions in isotropic black brane backgrounds to characterise the near equilibrium regimes of the dual boundary theories. In the vanishing-mass limit, the theory exhibits a hydrodynamic regime for weak double-trace deformations (relative to a scale set by the temperature) and a quasihydrodynamic regime for strong deformations. Turning on the bulk mass gives rise instead to a triad of quasihydrodynamic regimes controlled by both the mass and the double-trace coupling. In general, we find the low-energy spectra to be constrained by pole collisions, emergent symmetries and duality relations, the latter originating in part from Hodge-type dualities in the bulk. For nonzero mass, there is an additional strong/weak duality of the double-trace couplings. We further show, in the low-density limit of background charge, that relevant deformations are necessary for stable diffusion of sufficiently high-dimensional charged objects.

Approximate higher-form symmetries and dualities of massive p-forms in the holographic bulk

We develop a holographic framework for continuous higher-form symmetries and their low-energy effective descriptions, based on bulk path integrals, holographic renormalisation and boundary-condition-changing deformations. We show how approximate higher-form symmetries associated with a defect current can be realised holographically through massive antisymmetric tensor fields, either via parametrically small bulk masses or strong deformations associated with Robin boundary conditions. We further study the consequences of massless and massive Hodge dualities in the bulk, deriving the corresponding dualities between boundary theories related by different quantisation choices. Our results provide a unified perspective on approximate symmetries, dualities and strong/weak-coupling relations in holographic theories based on massive $p$-forms. In the self-dual case of an exact symmetry of degree $(d-3)/2$, we derive generalised constraints on holographic current-current correlators in the presence of double-trace deformations.

Viscoelastic hydrodynamics of charged black holes

We study the dynamics of an isotropic, planar AdS black hole charged under a pair of two-form gauge potentials. We prove that long wavelength, small amplitude perturbations of this state are governed by the relativistic theory of viscoelastic hydrodynamics. We use this effective theory to identify instabilities in certain regions of parameter space, and show that the dominant instability is always driven by fluctuations of an incoherent density of the higher-form charge. The spacetime we study also arises as a solution to gravity coupled to a pair of massless scalar fields, where part of its dynamics is governed by a simpler effective theory of heat diffusion. We derive this simpler description directly from viscoelastic hydrodynamics, demonstrating that the heat diffusion mode is the collective excitation of the viscoelastic fluid under no-flux boundary conditions.
