CP-Invariance Violation at Short-Baseline Experiments in 3+1 Neutrino Scenarios

New neutrino degrees of freedom allow for more sources of CP-invariance violation (CPV). We explore the requirements for accessing CP-odd mixing parameters in the so-called 3+1 scenario, where one assumes the existence of one extra, mostly sterile neutrino degree of freedom, heavier than the other three mass eigenstates. As a first step, we concentrate on the nu_e to nu_mu appearance channel in a hypothetical, upgraded version of the nuSTORM proposal. We establish that the optimal baseline for CPV studies depends strongly on the value of Delta m^2_14 -- the new mass-squared difference -- and that the ability to observe CPV depends significantly on whether the experiment is performed at the optimal baseline. Even at the optimal baseline, it is very challenging to see CPV in 3+1 scenarios if one considers only one appearance channel. Full exploration of CPV in short-baseline experiments will require precision measurements of tau-appearance, a challenge significantly beyond what is currently being explored by the experimental neutrino community.

Non-Unitary Neutrino Propagation From Neutrino Decay

Neutrino propagation in space-time is not constrained to be unitary if very light states - lighter than the active neutrinos - exist into which neutrinos may decay. If this is the case, neutrino flavor-change is governed by a handful of extra mixing and "oscillation" parameters, including new sources of CP-invariance violation. We compute the transition probabilities in the two- and three-flavor scenarios and discuss the different phenomenological consequences of the new physics. These are qualitatively different from other sources of unitarity violation discussed in the literature.

The Physical Range of Majorana Neutrino Mixing Parameters

If neutrinos are Majorana fermions, the lepton mixing parameter space consists of six mixing parameters: three mixing angles and three CP-odd phases. A related issue concerns the physical range of the mixing parameters. What values should these take so that all physically distinguishable mixing scenarios are realized? We present a detailed discussion of the lepton mixing parameter space in the case of two and three active neutrinos, and in the case of three active and N sterile neutrinos. We emphasize that this question, which has been a source of confusion even among "neutrino" physicists, is connected to an unambiguous definition of the neutrino mass eigenstates. We find that all Majorana phases can always be constrained to lie between 0 and pi, and that all mixing angles can be chosen positive and at most less than or equal to pi/2 provided the Dirac phases are allowed to vary between -pi and pi. We illustrate our results with several examples. Finally, we point out that, in the case of new flavor-changing neutrino interactions, the lepton mixing parameter space may need to be enlarged. We properly qualify this statement, and offer concrete examples.

Solving the Solar Neutrino Puzzle with KamLAND and Solar Data

We study what will be learnt about the solar neutrino puzzle and solar neutrino oscillations once the data from the KamLAND reactor neutrino experiment (soon to become available) are combined with those from the current solar neutrino experiments. We find that, in agreement with previous estimates, if the solution to the solar neutrino puzzle falls on the LMA region, KamLAND should be able to ``pin-point'' the right solution with unprecedented accuracy after a few years of data taking. Furthermore, the light side ($θ<π/4$) can be separated from the dark side ($θ>π/4$) at the 95% confidence level (CL) for most of the LMA region allowed by the current data at the 99% CL, while the addition of the KamLAND data need not improve our ability to limit a sterile component in ``solar'' oscillations. If KamLAND does not see an oscillation signal, the solar data would point to the LOW/VAC regions, while the SMA region would still lurk at the two sigma CL, meaning we would probably have to wait for Borexino data in order to finally piece the solar neutrino puzzle.
