Dynamics of generalized abcd Boussinesq solitary waves under a slowly variable bottom

The Boussinesq $abcd$ system is a 4-parameter set of equations posed in $\mathbb R_t\times\mathbb R_x$, originally derived by Bona, Chen and Saut as first-order 2-wave approximations of the incompressible and irrotational, two-dimensional water wave equations in the shallow water wave regime, in the spirit of the original Boussinesq derivation. Among the various particular regimes, each determined by the values of the parameters $(a, b, c, d)$ appearing in the equations, the \emph{generic} regime is characterized by the conditions $b, d > 0$ and $a, c < 0$. If additionally $b=d$, the $abcd$ system is Hamiltonian. In this paper, we investigate the existence of generalized solitary waves and the corresponding collision problem in the physically relevant \emph{variable bottom regime}, introduced by M.\ Chen. More precisely, the bottom is represented by a smooth space-time dependent function $h=\varepsilon h_0(\varepsilon t,\varepsilon x)$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter and $h_0$ is a fixed smooth profile. This formulation allows for a detailed description of weak long-range interactions and the evolution of the solitary wave without its destruction. We establish this result by constructing a new approximate solution that captures the interaction between the solitary wave and the slowly varying bottom.

Gray and black solitons of nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equations: existence, monotonicity and nonlocal-to-local limit

This article investigates the qualitative aspects of dark solitons of one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations with general nonlocal interactions, which correspond to traveling waves with subsonic speeds. Under general conditions on the potential interaction term, we provide uniform bounds, demonstrate the existence of symmetric solitons, and identify conditions under which monotonicity is lost. Additionally, we present new properties of black solitons. Moreover, we establish the nonlocal-to-local convergence, i.e. the convergence of the soliton of the nonlocal model toward the explicit dark solitons of the local Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Exotic traveling waves for a quasilinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero background

We study a defocusing quasilinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero conditions at infinity in dimension one. This quasilinear model corresponds to a weakly nonlocal approximation of the nonlocal Gross--Pitaevskii equation, and can also be derived by considering the effects of surface tension in superfluids. When the quasilinear term is neglected, the resulting equation is the classical Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which possesses a well-known stable branch of subsonic traveling waves solution, given by dark solitons. Our goal is to investigate how the quasilinear term affects the traveling-waves solutions. We provide a complete classification of finite energy traveling waves of the equation, in terms of the two parameters: the speed and the strength of the quasilinear term. This classification leads to the existence of dark and antidark solitons, as well as more exotic localized solutions like dark cuspons, compactons, and composite waves, even for supersonic speeds. Depending on the parameters, these types of solutions can coexist, showing that finite energy solutions are not unique. Furthermore, we prove that some of these dark solitons can be obtained as minimizers of the energy, at fixed momentum, and that they are orbitally stable.

Construction of minimizing travelling waves for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$

As a sequel to our previous analysis in [9] arXiv:2202.09411 on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$, we construct a branch of finite energy travelling waves as minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau energy at fixed momentum. We deduce that minimizers are precisely the planar dark solitons when the length of the transverse direction is less than a critical value, and that they are genuinely two-dimensional solutions otherwise. The proof of the existence of minimizers is based on the compactness of minimizing sequences, relying on a new symmetrization argument that is well-suited to the periodic setting.

Numerical computation of dark solitons of a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation

The existence and decay properties of dark solitons for a large class of nonlinear nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equations with nonzero boundary conditions in dimension one has been established recently in [de Laire and S. López-Martínez, Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 2022]. Mathematically, these solitons correspond to minimizers of the energy at fixed momentum and are orbitally stable. This paper provides a numerical method to compute approximations of such solitons for these types of equations, and provides actual numerical experiments for several types of physically relevant nonlocal potentials. These simulations allow us to obtain a variety of dark solitons, and to comment on their shapes in terms of the parameters of the nonlocal potential. In particular, they suggest that, given the dispersion relation, the speed of sound and the Landau speed are important values to understand the properties of these dark solitons. They also allow us to test the necessity of some sufficient conditions in the theoretical result proving existence of the dark solitons.

Existence and decay of traveling waves for the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We consider the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation that models a Bose gas with general nonlocal interactions between particles in one spatial dimension, with constant density far away. We address the problem of the existence of traveling waves with nonvanishing conditions at infinity, i.e. dark solitons. Under general conditions on the interactions, we prove existence of dark solitons for almost every subsonic speed. Moreover, we show existence in the whole subsonic regime for a family of potentials. The proofs rely on a Mountain Pass argument combined with the so-called "monotonicity trick", as well as on a priori estimates for the Palais-Smale sequences. Finally, we establish properties of the solitons such us exponential decay at infinity and analyticity.

Minimizing travelling waves for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$

We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in dimension two with periodic conditions in one direction, or equivalently on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}_L$ where $L > 0$ and $\mathbb{T}_L = \mathbb{R} / L \mathbb{Z}.$ We focus on the variational problem consisting in minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau energy under a fixed momentum constraint. We prove that there exists a threshold value for $L$ below which minimizers are the one-dimensional dark solitons, and above which no minimizer can be one-dimensional.

Recent results for the Landau-Lifshitz equation

We give a survey on some recent results concerning the Landau-Lifshitz equation, a fundamental nonlinear PDE with a strong geometric content, describing the dynamics of the magnetization in ferromagnetic materials. We revisit the Cauchy problem for the anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz equation, without dissipation, for smooth solutions, and also in the energy space in dimension one. We also examine two approximations of the Landau-Lifshitz equation given by of the Sine-Gordon equation and cubic Schrödinger equations, arising in certain singular limits of strong easy-plane and easy-axis anisotropy, respectively. Concerning localized solutions, we review the orbital and asymptotic stability problems for a sum of solitons in dimension one, exploiting the variational nature of the solitons in the hydrodynamical framework. Finally, we survey results concerning the existence, uniqueness and stability of self-similar solutions (expanders and shrinkers) for the isotropic Landau-Lifshitz equation with Gilbert term. Since expanders are associated with a singular initial condition with a jump discontinuity, we also review their well-posedness in spaces linked to the BMO space.

Self-similar shrinkers of the one-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation

The main purpose of this paper is the analytical study of self-shrinker solutions of the one-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG), a model describing the dynamics for the spin in ferromagnetic materials. We show that there is a unique smooth family of backward self-similar solutions to the LLG equation, up to symmetries, and we establish their asymptotics. Moreover, we obtain that in the presence of damping, the trajectories of the self-similar profiles converge to great circles on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, at an exponential rate. In particular, the results presented in this paper provide examples of blow-up in finite time, where the singularity develops due to rapid oscillations forming limit circles.

Traveling waves for some nonlocal 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations with nonzero conditions at infinity

We consider a nonlocal family of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with nonzero conditions at infinity in dimension one. We provide conditions on the nonlocal interaction such that there is a branch of traveling waves solutions with nonvanishing conditions at infinity. Moreover, we show that the branch is orbitally stable. In this manner, this result generalizes known properties for the contact interaction given by a Dirac delta function. Our proof relies on the minimization of the energy at fixed momentum. As a by-product of our analysis, we provide a simple condition to ensure that the solution to the Cauchy problem is global in time.

The Cauchy problem for the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in BMO and self-similar solutions

We prove a global well-posedness result for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with Gilbert damping provided that the BMO semi-norm of the initial data is small. As a consequence, we deduce the existence of self-similar solutions in any dimension. In the one-dimensional case, we characterize the self-similar solutions associated with an initial data given by some ($\mathbb{S}^2$-valued) step function and establish their stability. We also show the existence of multiple solutions if the damping is strong enough. Our arguments rely on the study of a dissipative quasilinear Schrödinger obtained via the stereographic projection and techniques introduced by Koch and Tataru.

The Sine-Gordon regime of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with a strong easy-plane anisotropy

It is well-known that the dynamics of biaxial ferromagnets with a strong easy-plane anisotropy is essentially governed by the Sine-Gordon equation. In this paper, we provide a rigorous justification to this observation. More precisely, we show the convergence of the solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz equation for biaxial ferromagnets towards the solutions to the Sine-Gordon equation in the regime of a strong easy-plane anisotropy. Moreover, we establish the sharpness of our convergence result. This result holds for solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz equation in high order Sobolev spaces. We first provide an alternative proof for local well-posedness in this setting by introducing high order energy quantities with better symmetrization properties. We then derive the convergence from the consistency of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with the Sine-Gordon equation by using well-tailored energy estimates. As a by-product, we also obtain a further derivation of the free wave regime of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.

Self-similar solutions of the one-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation

We consider the one-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation, a model describing the dynamics for the spin in ferromagnetic materials. Our main aim is the analytical study of the bi-parametric family of self-similar solutions of this model. In the presence of damping, our construction provides a family of global solutions of the LLG equation which are associated to a discontinuous initial data of infinite (total) energy, and which are smooth and have finite energy for all positive times. Special emphasis will be given to the behaviour of this family of solutions with respect to the Gilbert damping parameter. We would like to emphasize that our analysis also includes the study of self-similar solutions of the Schrödinger map and the heat flow for harmonic maps into the 2-sphere as special cases. In particular, the results presented here recover some of the previously known results in the setting of the 1d-Schrödinger map equation.

Minimal energy for the traveling waves of the Landau-Lifshitz equation

We consider nontrivial finite energy traveling waves for the Landau-Lifshitz equation with easy-plane anisotropy. Our main result is the existence of a minimal energy for these traveling waves, in dimensions two, three and four. The proof relies on a priori estimates related with the theory of harmonic maps and the connection of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with the kernels appearing in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Global well-posedness for a nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation with non-zero condition at infinity

We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation involving a nonlocal interaction potential. Our aim is to give sufficient conditions that cover a variety of nonlocal interactions such that the associated Cauchy problem is globally well-posed with non-zero boundary condition at infinity, in any dimension. We focus on even potentials that are positive definite or positive tempered distributions.
