Entanglement Swapping Scheduling for Quantum Repeater Chains under Decoherence during Classical Communications

First-generation quantum repeaters are essential in distributing entanglement over long distances since they could mitigate losses in optical fiber. Repeaters split the total distance into shorter, easier to generate links. Then, entanglement swapping establishes long range entanglement by performing local measurements at the repeaters and heralding their results. In this work, we develop an analytical model that estimates the impact of decoherence during heralding for a given protocol. Furthermore, we identify a competition between two phenomena: as repeater count increases, so does entanglement generation, but the additive impact of memory decoherence on final entanglement rate increases too. Therefore, we find that an optimal number of repeaters exists. These findings could lead the design of future quantum networks, both in the inter-repeater distance and swapping timings.

Digital quantum simulation of beam splitters and squeezing with IBM quantum computers

We present results on the digital quantum simulations of beam-splitter and squeezing interactions. The bosonic hamiltonians are mapped to qubits and then digitalized in order to implement them in the IBM quantum devices. We use error mitigation and post-selection to achieve high-fidelity digital quantum simulations of single-mode and two-mode interactions, as evidenced -- where possible -- by full tomography of the resulting states. We achieve fidelities above 90 \% in the case of single-mode squeezing with low squeezing values and ranging from 60 \% to 90 \% for large squeezing and in the more complex two-mode interactions.

Qubit Motion as a Microscopic Model for the Dynamical Casimir Effect

The generation of photons from the vacuum by means of the movement of a mirror is known as the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE). In general, this phenomenon is effectively described by a field with time-dependent boundary conditions. Alternatively, we consider a microscopic model of the DCE capable of reproducing the effect with no time-dependent boundary conditions. Besides the field, such a model comprises a subsystem modeling the mirror's internal structure. In this work, we study the most straightforward system for the mirror: a qubit moving in a cavity and coupled to one of the bosonic modes. We find that under certain conditions on the qubit's movement that do not depend on its physical properties, a large number of photons may be generated without changing the qubit state, as should be expected for a microscopic model of the mirror.

Tripartite Genuine Non-Gaussian Entanglement in Three-Mode Spontaneous Parametric Downconversion

We show that the states generated by a three-mode spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) interaction Hamiltonian possess tripartite entanglement of a different nature to other paradigmatic three-mode entangled states generated by the combination of two-mode SPDCs interactions. While two-mode SPDC generates gaussian states whose entanglement can be characterized by standard criteria based on two-mode quantum correlations, these criteria fail to capture the entanglement generated by three-mode SPDC. We use criteria built from three-mode correlation functions to show that the class of states recently generated in a superconducting-circuit implementation of three-mode SPDC ideally have tripartite entanglement, contrary to recent claims in the literature. These criteria are suitable for triple SPDC but we show that they fail to detect tripartite entanglement in other states which are known to possess it, which illustrates the existence of two fundamentally different notions of tripartite entanglement in three-mode continuous variable systems.

Entanglement through qubit motion and the dynamical Casimir effect

We explore the interplay between acceleration radiation and the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) in the field of superconducting quantum technologies, analyzing the generation of entanglement between two qubits by means of the DCE in several states of qubit motion. We show that the correlated absorption and emission of photons is crucial for entanglement, which in some cases can be linked to the notion of simultaneity in special relativity.
