Proper actions and decompositions in equivariant K-theory

In this paper we study a natural decomposition of $G$-equivariant $K$-theory of a proper $G$-space, when $G$ is a Lie group with a compact normal subgroup $A$ acting trivially. Our decomposition could be understood as a generalization of the theory known as Mackey machine under suitable hypotheses, since it decomposes $G$-equivariant K-theory in terms of twisted equivariant K-theory groups respect to some subgroups of $G/A$. Similar decompositions were known for the case of a compact Lie group acting on a space, but our main result applies to discrete, linear and almost connected groups. We also apply this decomposition to study equivariant $K$-theory of spaces with only one isotropy type. We provide a rich class of examples in order to expose the strength and generality of our results. We also study the decomposition for equivariant connective $K$-homology for actions of compact Lie groups using a suitable configuration space model, based on previous papers published by the third author.

Oriented and unitary equivariant bordism of surfaces

Fix a finite group $G$. We study $Ω^{SO,G}_2$ and $Ω^{U,G}_2$, the unitary and oriented bordism groups of smooth $G$-equivariant compact surfaces, respectively, and we calculate them explicitly. Their ranks are determined by the possible representations around fixed points, while their torsion subgroups are isomorphic to the direct sum of the Bogomolov multipliers of the Weyl groups of representatives of conjugacy classes of all subgroups of $G$. We present an alternative proof of the fact that surfaces with free actions which induce non-trivial elements in the Bogomolov multiplier of the group cannot equivariantly bound. This result permits us to show that the 2-dimensional SK-groups (Schneiden und Kleben, or ``cut and paste") of the classifying spaces of a finite group can be understood in terms of the bordism group of free equivariant surfaces modulo the ones that bound arbitrary actions.

$\mathbb{Z}_k$-stratifolds

Generalizing the ideas of $\mathbb{Z}_k$-manifolds from Sullivan and stratifolds from Kreck, we define $\mathbb{Z}_k$-stratifolds. We show that the bordism theory of $\mathbb{Z}_k$-stratifolds is sufficient to represent all homology classes of a $CW$-complex with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_k$. We present a geometric interpretation of the Bockstein long exact sequences and the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence for $\mathbb{Z}_k$-bordism ($k$ an odd number). Finally, for $p$ an odd prime, we give geometric representatives of all classes in $H_*(B\mathbb{Z}_p;\mathbb{Z}_p)$ using $\mathbb{Z}_p$-stratifolds.

Morita Invariance of Equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann Category and Invariant Topological Complexity

We use the homotopy invariance of equivariant principal bundles to prove that the equivariant ${\mathcal A}$-category of Clapp and Puppe is invariant under Morita equivalence. As a corollary, we obtain that both the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a group action and the invariant topological complexity are invariant under Morita equivalence. This allows a definition of topological complexity for orbifolds.

Equivariant complex bundles, fixed points and equivariant unitary bordism

We study the fixed points of the universal G-equivariant n-dimensional complex vector bundle and obtain a decomposition formula in terms of twisted equivariant universal complex vector bundles of smaller dimension. We use this decomposition to describe the fixed points of the complex equivariant K-theory spectrum and the equivariant unitary bordism groups for adjacent families of subgroups.

Malaria intensity in Colombia by regions and populations

Determining the distribution of disease prevalence among heterogeneous populations at the national scale is fundamental for epidemiology and public health. Here, we use a combination of methods (spatial scan statistic, topological data analysis, epidemic profile) to study measurable differences in malaria intensity by regions and populations of Colombia. This study explores three main questions: What are the regions of Colombia where malaria is epidemic? What are the regions and populations in Colombia where malaria is endemic? What associations exist between epidemic outbreaks between regions in Colombia? \textit{Plasmodium falciparum} is most prevalent in the Pacific Coast, some regions of the Amazon Basin, and some regions of the Magdalena Basin. \textit{Plasmodium vivax} is the most prevalent parasite in Colombia, particularly in the Northern Amazon Basin, the Caribbean, and municipalities of Sucre, Antioquia and Cordoba. Malaria has been reported to be most common among 15-45 year old men. We find that the age-class suffering high risk of malaria infection ranges from 20 to 30 with an acute peak at 25 years of age. Second, this pattern was not found to be generalizable across Colombian populations, Indigenous and Afrocolombian populations experience endemic malaria (with household transmission). Third, clusters of epidemic malaria for \textit{Plasmodium vivax} were detected across Southern Colombia including the Amazon Basin and the Southern Pacific region. \textit{Plasmodium falciparum}, was is epidemic in 13 of the 1,123 municipalities (1.2\%). Some key locations act as bridges between epidemic and endemic regions. Finally, we generate a regional classification based on intensity and synchrony, dividing the country into epidemic areas and bridge areas.

Equilateral $p$-gons in $\mathbb R^d$ and deformed spheres and mod $p$ Fadell-Husseini index

We introduce the concept of $r$-equilateral $m$-gons. We prove the existence of $r$-equilateral $p$-gons in $\mathbb R^d$ if $r<d$ and the existence of equilateral $p$-gons in the image of continuous injective maps $f:S^d\to \mathbb R^{d+1}$. Our ideas are based mainly in the paper of Y. Soibelman \cite{soibelman}, in which the topological Borsuk number of $\mathbb{R}^2$ is calculated by means of topological methods and the paper of P. Blagojević and G. Ziegler \cite{blagojevictetrahedra} where Fadell-Husseini index is used for solving a problem related to the topological Borsuk problem for $\mathbb{R}^3$.

A BV-algebra Structure on Hochschild Cohomology of the Group Ring of Finitely Generated Abelian Groups

We study a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of the group ring of finitely generated abelian groups. The Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure for finite abelian groups comes from the fact that the group ring of finite groups is a symmetric algebra, and the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure for free abelian groups of finite rank comes from the fact that its group ring is a Calabi-Yau algebra.
