Projective models for Hilbert squares of $K3$ surfaces

For a very general polarized $K3$ surface $S\subset \mathbb{P}^g$ of genus $g\ge 5$, we study the linear system on the Hilbert square $S^{[2]}$ associated to quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^g$ that contain $S$. We prove its very ampleness for $g\geq 7$. In the cases of genus 7 or 8, we describe in detail the projective geometry of the corresponding embedding by making use of the Mukai model for $S$. In both cases, it can be realized as a degeneracy locus on an ambient homogeneous space, in a strikingly similar fashion. In consequence, we give explicit descriptions of its ideal and syzygies. Furthermore, we extract new information on the locally complete families, in a first step towards the understanding of their projective geometry.

Coble type hypersurfaces and hyperkähler fourfolds

A classical result, already observed by Coble, asserts that a genus 2 Jacobian can be embedded in $\mathbf P^8$ as the singular locus of a unique cubic hypersurface; similarly, the Kummer of a genus 3 Jacobian is embedded in $\mathbf P^7$ as the singular locus of a unique quartic hypersurface. We present a precise analogue of these results in the context of hyperkähler fourfolds: for the general member in the 20-dimensional locally complete families of polarized hyperkähler fourfolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[2]}$-type with squares 4 or 6 and divisibility 1, we establish the existence of a unique Coble type hypersurface. As a consequence, we describe several geometric aspects of the corresponding moduli spaces.

Picard bundles and the degree of irrationality of Jacobians and Pryms

For a smooth projective curve of genus $g$, we study some positivity properties of (twisted) rank-$g$ Picard bundles on the $g$-fold symmetric product. As an application, we prove that the degree of irrationality of any genus $g$ Jacobian is bounded from above by $2^g$, and the degree of irrationality of any $(g-1)$-dimensional Prym variety is bounded from above by $2^{2g-3}$.

Hurwitz-Brill-Noether theory via K3 surfaces and stability conditions

We develop a novel approach to the Brill-Noether theory of curves endowed with a degree k cover of the projective line via Bridgeland stability conditions on elliptic K3 surfaces. We first develop the Brill-Noether theory on elliptic K3 surfaces via the notion of Bridgeland stability type for objects in their derived category. As a main application, we show that curves on elliptic K3 surfaces serve as the first known examples of smooth k-gonal curves which are general from the viewpoint of Hurwitz-Brill-Noether theory. In particular, we provide new proofs of the main non-existence and existence results in Hurwitz-Brill-Noether theory. Finally, using degree-k Halphen surfaces, we construct explicit examples of curves defined over number fields which are general from the perspective of Hurwitz-Brill-Noether theory.

Monodromy of the Prym map and semicanonical pencils in genus 6

The Prym map $\mathcal{P}_6$ in genus 6 is dominant and generically finite of degree 27. When restricted to the divisor of curves with an odd semicanonical pencil $\mathcal{T}_6^o$, it is still generically finite, but of degree strictly smaller. In this paper, we prove that $\mathcal{P}_6$ restricted to $\mathcal{T}_6^o$ is birational and that the monodromy group over the image of $\mathcal{T}_6^o$ is the Weyl group $WD_5$. Thus, there are two other irreducible divisors in the moduli space of Prym curves $\mathcal{R}_6$ and the degree of $\mathcal{P}_6$ restricted to them is 10 and 16. Moreover, we study the geometry of the divisor where $\mathcal{P}_6$ has degree 10.

On the degree of irrationality of low genus $K3$ surfaces

Given a general polarized $K3$ surface $S\subset \mathbb P^g$ of genus $g\le 14$, we study projections $S\hookrightarrow \mathbb P^g\dashrightarrow \mathbb P^2$ of minimal degree and their variational structure. In particular, we prove that the degree of irrationality of all such surfaces is at most $4$, and that for $g=7,8,9,11$ there are no rational maps $S\dashrightarrow \mathbb P^2$ of degree $3$ induced by the primitive linear system. Our methods combine vector bundle techniques à la Lazarsfeld with derived category tools, and also make use of the rich theory of singular curves on $K3$ surfaces.

Geometry of Prym semicanonical pencils and an application to cubic threefolds

In the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_g$ of double étale covers of curves of a fixed genus $g$, the locus formed by covers of curves with a semicanonical pencil consists of two irreducible divisors $\mathcal T^e_g$ and $\mathcal T^o_g$. We study the Prym map on these divisors, which shows significant differences between them and has a rich geometry in the cases of low genus. In particular, the analysis of $\mathcal T^o_5$ has enumerative consequences for lines on cubic threefolds.

The divisors of Prym semicanonical pencils

In the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_g$ of double étale covers of curves of a fixed genus $g$, the locus of covers of curves with a semicanonical pencil decomposes as the union of two divisors $\mathcal{T}^e_g$ and $\mathcal{T}^o_g$. Adapting arguments of Teixidor for the divisor of curves having a semicanonical pencil, we prove that both divisors are irreducible and compute their divisor classes in the Deligne-Mumford compactification $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_g$.

Chern degree functions

We introduce Chern degree functions for complexes of coherent sheaves on a polarized surface, which encode information given by stability conditions on the boundary of the $(α, β)$-plane. We prove that these functions extend to continuous real valued functions and we study their differentiability in terms of stability. For abelian surfaces, Chern degree functions coincide with the cohomological rank functions defined by Jiang-Pareschi. We illustrate in some geometrical situations a general strategy to compute these functions.

The basepoint-freeness threshold of a very general abelian surface

For abelian surfaces of Picard rank 1, we perform explicit computations of the cohomological rank functions of the ideal sheaf of one point, and in particular of the basepoint-freeness threshold. Our main tool is the relation between cohomological rank functions and Bridgeland stability. In virtue of recent results of Caucci and Ito, these computations provide new information on the syzygies of polarized abelian surfaces.
