Engineering spin waves in a high-spin ultracold Fermi gas

We report on the detailed study of multi-component spin-waves in an s=3/2 Fermi gas where the high spin leads to novel tensorial degrees of freedom compared to s = 1/2 systems. The excitations of a spin-nematic state are investigated from the linear to the nonlinear regime, where the tensorial character is particularly pronounced. By tuning the initial state we engineer the tensorial spin-wave character, such that the magnitude and sign of the counterflow spin-currents are effectively controlled. A comparison of our data with numerical and analytical results shows excellent agreement.

Spin segregation via dynamically induced long-range interaction in a system of ultracold fermions

We investigate theoretically the time evolution of a one-dimensional system of spin-1/2 fermions in a harmonic trap after, initially, a spiral spin configuration far-from equilibrium is created. We predict a spin segregation building up in time already for weak interaction under realistic experimental conditions. The effect relies on the interplay between exchange interaction and the harmonic trap, and it is found for a wide range of parameters. It can be understood as a consequence of an effective, dynamically induced long-range interaction that is derived by integrating out the rapid oscillatory dynamics in the trap.

Bose-Hubbard model with occupation dependent parameters

We study the ground-state properties of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice in the regime of strong interactions. The system is described by a non-standard Bose-Hubbard model with both occupation-dependent tunneling and on-site interaction. We find that for sufficiently strong coupling the system features a phase-transition from a Mott insulator with one particle per site to a superfluid of spatially extended particle pairs living on top of the Mott background -- instead of the usual transition to a superfluid of single particles/holes. Increasing the interaction further, a superfluid of particle pairs localized on a single site (rather than being extended) on top of the Mott background appears. This happens at the same interaction strength where the Mott-insulator phase with 2 particles per site is destroyed completely by particle-hole fluctuations for arbitrarily small tunneling. In another regime, characterized by weak interaction, but high occupation numbers, we observe a dynamical instability in the superfluid excitation spectrum. The new ground state is a superfluid, forming a 2D slab, localized along one spatial direction that is spontaneously chosen.

Controlled hole doping of a Mott insulator of ultracold fermionic atoms

Considering a system of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, we propose a simple and robust implementation of a quantum simulator for the homogeneous t-J model with a well-controlled fraction of holes x. The proposed experiment can provide valuable insight into the physics of cuprate superconductors. A similar scheme applied to bosons, moreover, allows one to investigate experimentally the subtle role of inhomogeneity when a system passes from one quantum phase to another.

Frustrated quantum antiferromagnetism with ultracold bosons in a triangular lattice

We propose to realize the anisotropic triangular-lattice Bose-Hubbard model with positive tunneling matrix elements by using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice dressed by a fast lattice oscillation. This model exhibits frustrated antiferromagnetism at experimentally feasible temperatures; it interpolates between a classical rotor model for weak interaction, and a quantum spin-1/2 $XY$-model in the limit of hard-core bosons. This allows to explore experimentally gapped spin liquid phases predicted recently [Schmied et al., New J. Phys. {\bf 10}, 045017 (2008)].

Process chain approach to high-order perturbation calculus for quantum lattice models

A method based on Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation theory is developed that allows to obtain high-order series expansions for ground-state properties of quantum lattice models. The approach is capable of treating both lattice geometries of large spatial dimensionalities d and on-site degrees of freedom with large state space dimensionalities. It has recently been used to accurately compute the zero-temperature phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model on a hypercubic lattice, up to arbitrary large filling and for d=2, 3 and greater [Teichmann et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 100503(R) (2009)].

Process chain approach to the Bose-Hubbard model: Ground-state properties and phase diagram

We carry out a perturbative analysis, of high order in the tunneling parameter, of the ground state of the homogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in the Mott insulator phase. This is made possible by a diagrammatic process chain approach, derived from Kato's representation of the many-body perturbation series, which can be implemented numerically in a straightforward manner. We compute ground-state energies, atom-atom correlation functions, density-density correlations, and occupation number fluctuations, for one-, two-, and three-dimensional lattices with arbitrary integer filling. A phenomenological scaling behavior is found which renders the data almost independent of the filling factor. In addition, the process chain approach is employed for calculating the boundary between the Mott insulator phase and the superfluid phase with high accuracy. We also consider systems with dimensionalities d>3, thus monitoring the approach to the mean-field limit. The versatility of the method suggests further applications to other systems which are less well understood.

Exploring dynamic localization with a Bose-Einstein condensate

We report on the experimental observation of dynamic localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a shaken optical lattice, both for sinusoidal and square-wave forcing. The formulation of this effect in terms of a quasienergy band collapse, backed by the excellent agreement of the observed collapse points with the theoretical predictions, suggests the feasibility of systematic quasienergy band engineering.

Bose-Hubbard phase diagram with arbitrary integer filling

We study the transition from a Mott insulator to a superfluid in both the two- and the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at zero temperature, employing the method of the effective potential. Converting Kato's perturbation series into an algorithm capable of reaching high orders, we obtain accurate critical parameters for any integer filling factor. Our technique allows us to monitor both the approach to the mean-field limit by considering spatial dimensionalities $d > 3$, and to the quantum rotor limit of high filling, which refers to an array of Josephson junctions.

Avoided level crossing spectroscopy with dressed matter waves

We devise a method for probing resonances of macroscopic matter waves in shaken optical lattices by monitoring their response to slow parameter changes, and show that such resonances can be disabled by particular choices of the driving amplitude. The theoretical analysis of this scheme reveals far-reaching analogies between dressed atoms and time-periodically forced matter waves.

Dressed matter waves

We suggest to view ultracold atoms in a time-periodically shifted optical lattice as a "dressed matter wave", analogous to a dressed atom in an electromagnetic field. A possible effect lending support to this concept is a transition of ultracold bosonic atoms from a superfluid to a Mott-insulating state in response to appropriate "dressing" achieved through time-periodic lattice modulation. In order to observe this effect in a laboratory experiment, one has to identify conditions allowing for effectively adiabatic motion of a many-body Floquet state.

AC-induced superfluidity

We argue that a system of ultracold bosonic atoms in a tilted optical lattice can become superfluid in response to resonant AC forcing. Among others, this allows one to prepare a Bose-Einstein condensate in a state associated with a negative effective mass. Our reasoning is backed by both exact numerical simulations for systems consisting of few particles, and by a theoretical approach based on Floquet-Fock states.

Analog of photon-assisted tunneling in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study many-body tunneling of a small Bose-Einstein condensate in a periodically modulated, tilted double-well potential. Periodic modulation of the trapping potential leads to an analog of photon-assisted tunneling, with distinct signatures of the interparticle interaction visible in the amount of particles transferred from one well to the other. In particular, under experimentally accessible conditions there exist well-developed half-integer Shapiro-like resonances.

Superfluid-insulator transition in a periodically driven optical lattice

We demonstrate that the transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator in the Bose-Hubbard model can be induced by an oscillating force through an effective renormalization of the tunneling matrix element. The mechanism involves adiabatic following of Floquet states, and can be tested experimentally with Bose-Einstein condensates in periodically driven optical lattices. Its extension from small to very large systems yields nontrivial information on the condensate dynamics.

Ground-state energy and depletions for a dilute binary Bose gas

When calculating the ground-state energy of a weakly interacting Bose gas with the help of the customary contact pseudopotential, one meets an artifical ultraviolet divergence which is caused by the incorrect treatment of the true interparticle interactions at small distances. We argue that this problem can be avoided by retaining the actual, momentum-dependent interaction matrix elements, and use this insight for computing both the ground-state energy and the depletions of a binary Bose gas mixture. Even when considering the experimentally relevant case of equal masses of both species, the resulting expressions are quite involved, and no straightforward generalizations of the known single-species formulas. On the other hand, we demonstrate in detail how these latter formulas are recovered from our two-species results in the limit of vanishing interspecies interaction.

Ground state energy of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate beyond Bogoliubov

The standard calculations of the ground-state energy of a homogeneous Bose gas rely on approximations which are physically reasonable but difficult to control. Lieb and Yngvason [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 2504 (1998)] have proved rigorously that the commonly accepted leading order term of the ground state energy is correct in the zero-density-limit. Here, strong indications are given that also the next to leading term is correct. It is shown that the first terms obtained in a perturbative treatment provide contributions which are lost in the Bogoliubov approach.
