Heavy Pair Production Currents with General Quantum Numbers in Dimensionally Regularized NRQCD

We discuss the form and construction of general color singlet heavy particle-antiparticle pair production currents for arbitrary quantum numbers, and issues related to evanescent spin operators and scheme-dependences in nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) in n=3-2epsilon dimensions. The anomalous dimensions of the leading interpolating currents for heavy quark and colored scalar pairs in arbitrary (2S+1)L_J angular-spin states are determined at next-to-leading order in the nonrelativistic power counting.

Jets from Massive Unstable Particles: Top-Mass Determination

We construct jet observables for energetic top quarks that can be used to determine a short distance top quark mass from reconstruction in e+ e- collisions with accuracy better than Lambda_{QCD}. Using a sequence of effective field theories we connect the production energy, mass, and top width scales, Q>> m>> Gamma, for the top jet cross section, and derive a QCD factorization theorem for the top invariant mass spectrum. Our analysis accounts for: alpha_s corrections from the production and mass scales, corrections due to constraints in defining invariant masses, non-perturbative corrections from the cross-talk between the jets, and alpha_s corrections to the Breit-Wigner line-shape. This paper mainly focuses on deriving the factorization theorem for hemisphere invariant mass distributions and other event shapes in e+e- collisions applicable at a future Linear Collider. We show that the invariant mass distribution is not a simple Breit-Wigner involving the top width. Even at leading order it is shifted and broadened by non-perturbative soft QCD effects. We predict that the invariant mass peak position increases linearly with Q/m due to these non-perturbative effects. They are encoded in terms of a universal soft function that also describes soft effects for massless dijet events. In a future paper we compute alpha_s corrections to the jet invariant mass spectrum, including a summation of large logarithms between the scales Q, m and Gamma.

Factorization Approach for Top Mass Reconstruction at High Energies

Using effective theories for jets and heavy quarks it is possible to prove that the double differential top-antitop invariant mass distribution for the process $e^+e^-\to t\bar t$ in the resonance region for c.m. energies $Q$ much larger than the top mass can factorized into perturbatively computable hard coefficients and jet functions and a non-perturbative soft function. For invariant mass prescriptions based on hemispheres defined with respect to the thrust axis the soft function can be extracted from massless jet event shape distributions. This approach allows in principle for top mass determinations without uncertainties from hadronization using the reconstruction method and to quantify the top mass scheme dependence of the measured top quark mass value.

Two-Loop Ultrasoft Running of the O(v^2) QCD Quark Potentials

The two-loop ultrasoft contributions to the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) running of the QCD potentials at order v^2 are determined. The results represent an important step towards the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) description of heavy quark pair production and annihilation close to threshold.

Designing Gapped Soft Functions for Jet Production

Distributions in jet production often depend on a soft function, S, which describes hadronic radiation between the jets. Near kinematic thresholds S encodes nonperturbative information, while far from thresholds S can be computed with an operator product expansion (OPE). We design soft functions for jets that serve this dual purpose, reducing to the perturbative result in the OPE region and to a consistent model in the nonperturbative region. We use the MSbar scheme, and in both regions S displays the appropriate renormalization group scale dependence. We point out that viable soft function models should have a gap associated with the minimum hadronic energy deposit. This gap is connected to the leading O(Lambda_QCD) renormalon ambiguity in jet event shapes. By defining the gap in a suitable scheme we demonstrate that the leading renormalon can be eliminated. This improves the convergence of perturbative results, and also the stability by which non-perturbative parameters encode the underlying soft physics.

Top Threshold Physics

Running a future Linear Collider at the top pair threshold allows for precise measurements of the mass, the widths and the couplings of the top quark. I give a nontechnical review on recent theoretical developments and the theory status in top threshold physics concerning QCD corrections and top quark finite lifetime and electroweak effects. I also discuss threshold physics in the context of measurements of the top Yukawa coupling from $e^+e^-\to t\bar t H$ and of squark pair production.

Renormalization Group Analysis in NRQCD for Colored Scalars

The vNRQCD Lagrangian for colored heavy scalar fields in the fundamental representation of QCD and the renormalization group analysis of the corresponding operators are presented. The results are an important ingredient for renormalization group improved computations of scalar-antiscalar bound state energies and production rates at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) order.

Charm Quark Mass from Inclusive Semileptonic B Decays

The MSbar charm quark mass is determined to be m_c(m_c)=1224+-17+-54 MeV from a global fit to inclusive B meson decay data, where the first error is experimental, and includes the uncertainty in alpha_s, and the second is an estimate of theoretical uncertainties in the computation. We discuss the implications of the pole mass renormalon in the determination of m_c.

The Large Higgs Energy Region in Higgs Associated Top Pair Production at the Linear Collider

The process e^+ e^- to t \bar t H is considered in the kinematic end point region where the Higgs energy is close to its maximal energy. In perturbative QCD, using the loop expansion, the amplitudes are plagued by Coulomb singularities that need to be resummed. We show that the QCD dynamics in this end point region is governed by nonrelativistic heavy quarkonium dynamics, and we use a nonrelativistic effective theory to compute the Higgs energy distribution at leading and next-to-leading logarithmic approximation in the nonrelativistic expansion. Updated numbers for the total cross section including the summations in the Higgs energy end point region are presented.

Effects of the t t-bar threshold in e+e- to t t-bar H

In the region where the Higgs energy is large the process e+e- to t t-bar H is governed by nonrelativistic QCD dynamics and one has to employ effective theory methods to make first principles QCD predictions. In this talk we use the effective theory vNRQCD to compute the Higgs energy distribution at next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. It is shown that the corrections are particularly important for smaller c.m. energies.

Perturbative corrections to the determination of Vub from the P+ spectrum in B->X_u l nu

We investigate the relation between the E_gamma spectrum in B->X_s gamma decay and the P+ spectrum in semileptonic B->X_u l nu decay (P+ is the hadronic energy minus the absolute value of the hadronic three-momentum), which provides in principle the theoretically simplest determination of Vub from any of the "shape function regions" of B->X_u l nu spectra. We calculate analytically the P+ spectrum to order alpha_s^2 beta_0, and study its relation to the B->X_s gamma photon spectrum to eliminate the leading dependence on nonperturbative effects. We compare the result of fixed order perturbation theory to the next-to-leading log renormalization group improved calculation, and argue that fixed order perturbation theory is likely to be a more appropriate expansion. Implications for the perturbative uncertainties in the determination of Vub from the P+ spectrum are discussed.

Bottom Quark Mass Determination from low-n Sum Rules

We study the uncertainties in the MSbar bottom quark mass determination using relativistic sum rules to O(alpha_S^2). We include charm mass effects and secondary b bbar production and treat the experimental continuum region more conservatively than previous analyses. The PDG treatment of the region between the resonances Upsilon (4S) and Upsilon (5S) is reconsidered. Our final result reads: m_b(m_b)=(4.20 \pm 0.09) GeV.

Ultrasoft Renormalization in Non-Relativistic QCD

For Non-Relativistic QCD the velocity renormalization group correlates the renormalization scales for ultrasoft, potential and soft degrees of freedom. Here we discuss the renormalization of operators by ultrasoft gluons. We show that renormalization of soft vertices can induce new operators, and also present a procedure for correctly subtracting divergences in mixed potential-ultrasoft graphs. Our results affect the running of the spin-independent potentials in QCD. The change for the NNLL t-tbar cross section near threshold is very small, being at the 1% level and essentially independent of the energy. We also discuss implications for analyzing situations where mv^2 ~ Lambda_QCD.

The Running Coulomb Potential and Lamb Shift in QCD

The QCD beta-function and the anomalous dimensions for the Coulomb potential and the static potential first differ at three loop order. We evaluate the three loop ultrasoft anomalous dimension for the Coulomb potential and give the complete three loop running. Using this result, we calculate the leading logarithmic Lamb shift for a heavy quark-antiquark bound state, which includes all contributions to the binding energies of the form mα_s^4(α_s lnα_s)^k, k\ge 0.

B decays in the upsilon expansion

Theoretical predictions for B decay rates are rewritten in terms of the Upsilon(1S) meson mass instead of the b quark mass, using a modified perturbation expansion. The theoretical consistency of this expansion is shown both at low and high orders. Our method improves the behavior of the perturbation series for semileptonic and nonleptonic inclusive decay modes, as well as for exclusive decay form factors. The results are applied to the determination of the semileptonic B branching ratio, charm counting, the ratio of B -> X tau nu and B -> X e nu decay rates, and form factor ratios in B -> D* e nu decay. We also comment on why it is not possible to separate perturbative and nonperturbative effects in QCD.

B decay and the Upsilon mass

Theoretical predictions for inclusive semileptonic B decay rates are rewritten in terms of the Upsilon(1S) meson mass instead of the b quark mass, using a modified perturbation expansion. This method gives theoretically consistent and phenomenologically useful results. Perturbation theory is well behaved, and the largest theoretical error in the predictions coming from the uncertainty in the quark mass is eliminated. The results are applied to the determination of $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{ub}|$, and $λ_1$.

Approximating the radiatively corrected Higgs mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model

To obtain the most accurate predictions for the Higgs masses in the minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM), one should compute the full set of one-loop radiative corrections, resum the large logarithms to all orders, and add the dominant two-loop effects. A complete computation following this procedure yields a complex set of formulae which must be analyzed numerically. We discuss a very simple approximation scheme which includes the most important terms from each of the three components mentioned above. We estimate that the Higgs masses computed using our scheme lie within 2 GeV of their theoretically predicted values over a very large fraction of MSSM parameter space.

Two-Loop Radiative Corrections to the Lightest Higgs Boson Mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model

In the minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM), the upper limit of the lightest Higgs boson mass, $\mhl$, depends strongly on the top quark mass, $m_t$. We have computed the dominant two-loop radiative corrections to this upper limit of $\mhl$ in order to eliminate large uncertainties due to QCD and $m_t^6$ corrections. It is shown that the QCD corrections significantly reduce the one-loop corrections. As a result, the SUSY parameter space accessible to LEP experiments is significantly increased.
