Report of the Topical Group on Top quark physics and heavy flavor production for Snowmass 2021

This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Topical Group on EW Physics: Heavy flavor and top quark physics (EF03) of the 2021 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). It aims to highlight the physics potential of top-quark studies and heavy-flavor production processes (bottom and charm) at the HL-LHC and possible future hadron and lepton colliders and running scenarios.

Exclusive Top Threshold Matching at Lepton Colliders

The threshold scan at future lepton colliders is the most precise known method to determine the top quark mass (well below 100 MeV), a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model that co-determines the stability properties of the electroweak vacuum. We present a new method to match the continuum next-to-leading order QCD corrections with the next-to-leading logarithmic resummation of the Coulomb singularities of the quasi-toponium bound state at threshold where fixed-order perturbation theory is invalid. This matching is performed at the level of the fully exclusive $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ final state. It allows to study all kinds of differential distributions at or close to threshold. The top mass dependence of these distributions opens up new possibilities for the top mass determination that might be competitive with the inclusive threshold scan.

Exclusive top production at a Linear Collider at and off the threshold

We review exclusive top pair production including decays at a future high-energy lepton collider, both in the threshold region and for higher energies. For the continuum process, we take complete QCD next-to-leading order matrix elements for the $2\to 6$ process with leptonic W decays into account. At threshold, we match the fixed-order relativistic QCD-NLO cross section to a nonrelativistic cross section with next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) threshold resummation implemented via a form factor.

Fully-differential Top-Pair Production at a Lepton Collider: From Threshold to Continuum

We present an approach to predict exclusive $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ production at lepton colliders that correctly describes the top-anti-top threshold as well as the continuum region. We incorporate $t\bar{t}$ form factors for the NLL threshold resummation derived in NRQCD into a factorized relativistic cross section using an extended double-pole approximation, which accounts for fixed-order QCD corrections to the top decays at NLO. This is combined with the full fixed-order QCD result at NLO for $W^+bW^-\bar{b}$ production to obtain predictions that are not only valid at threshold but smoothly transition to the continuum region. Our implementation is based on the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD and the code TOPPIK and allows to compute fully-differential threshold-resummed cross sections including the interference with non-resonant background processes. For the first time it is now possible to systematically study general differential observables at future lepton colliders involving the decay products of the top quarks at energies close to the pair production threshold and beyond.

The Top-Antitop Threshold at the ILC: NNLL QCD Uncertainties

We discuss the top-antitop production cross section near threshold at a future linear collider accounting for the NNLL QCD corrections to the anomalous dimension of the leading S-wave production current computed recently within renormalization-group-improved NRQCD perturbation theory. We argue that the still unknown soft NNLL mixing corrections are negligible so that the NNLL QCD corrections to the total cross section can be considered complete for practical purposes. Based on combined variations of the renormalization and matching scales and the overall size of the perturbative corrections we estimate that the NNLL QCD total cross section has a normalization uncertainty of 5% at threshold. We present results for the total cross section and also for the experimentally more relevant case, when moderate cuts are imposed on the reconstructed top and antitop invariant masses.

Two loop soft function for secondary massive quarks

We present the calculation of the $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2 C_F T_F)$ massive quark corrections to the soft function for the double hemisphere jet mass distribution in $e^+ e^-$ collisions, a necessary ingredient for the calculation of several event shape distributions at N${}^3$LL order. Using the mass as an infrared regulator allows us to derive an expression for the massless momentum space limit, which has not been given so far in the literature. Furthermore, we compute the corresponding corrections in the soft function for thrust, the most prominent projection of the double hemisphere mass distribution. Finally we give expressions for the corresponding renormalon subtractions in the gap scheme.

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report - Volume 2: Physics

The International Linear Collider Technical Design Report (TDR) describes in four volumes the physics case and the design of a 500 GeV centre-of-mass energy linear electron-positron collider based on superconducting radio-frequency technology using Niobium cavities as the accelerating structures. The accelerator can be extended to 1 TeV and also run as a Higgs factory at around 250 GeV and on the Z0 pole. A comprehensive value estimate of the accelerator is give, together with associated uncertainties. It is shown that no significant technical issues remain to be solved. Once a site is selected and the necessary site-dependent engineering is carried out, construction can begin immediately. The TDR also gives baseline documentation for two high-performance detectors that can share the ILC luminosity by being moved into and out of the beam line in a "push-pull" configuration. These detectors, ILD and SiD, are described in detail. They form the basis for a world-class experimental programme that promises to increase significantly our understanding of the fundamental processes that govern the evolution of the Universe.

Renormalization Group Improved Bottom Mass from Upsilon Sum Rules at NNLL Order

We determine the bottom quark mass from non-relativistic large-n Upsilon sum rules with renormalization group improvement at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. We compute the theoretical moments within the vNRQCD formalism and account for the summation of powers of the Coulomb singularities as well as of logarithmic terms proportional to powers of alpha_s ln(n). The renormalization group improvement leads to a substantial stabilization of the theoretical moments compared to previous fixed-order analyses, which did not account for the systematic treatment of the logarithmic alpha_s ln(n) terms, and allows for reliable single moment fits. For the current world average of the strong coupling (alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1183 +- 0.0010) we obtain M_b^{1S}=4.755 +- 0.057(pert) +- 0.009(alpha_s) +- 0.003(exp) GeV for the bottom 1S mass and m_b(m_b)= 4.235 +- 0.055(pert) +- 0.003(exp) GeV for the bottom MSbar mass, where we have quoted the perturbative error and the uncertainties from the strong coupling and the experimental data.

NNLL top-antitop production at threshold

We present an update to the NNLL RG-improved QCD prediction of top-antitop production in electron-positron annihilation at threshold. It includes for the first time a complete NNLL resummation of ultrasoft logarithms, which are dominant at this order and give a sizable correction. The renormalization scale dependence of the total resonance cross section decreases substantially compared to earlier predictions, where the ultrasoft logarithms were included only partially.

Global Fit of alpha_s(m_Z) to Thrust at NNNLL Order with Power Corrections

From soft-collinear effective theory one can derive a factorization formula for the e+e- thrust distribution dsigma/dtau with tau = 1-T that is applicable for all tau. The formula accommodates available O(alpha_s^3) fixed-order QCD results, resummation of logarithms at NNNLL order, a universal nonperturbative soft function for hadronization effects, factorization of nonperturbative effects in subleading power contributions, bottom mass effects and QED corrections. We emphasize that the use of Monte Carlos to estimate hadronization effects is not compatible with high-precision, high-order analyses. We present a global analysis of all available e+e- thrust data measured at Q = 35 to 207 GeV in the tail region, where a two-parameter fit can be carried out for alpha_s(m_Z) and Omega_1, the first moment of the soft function. To obtain small theoretical errors it is essential to define Omega_1 in a short-distance scheme, free of an O(Lambda_QCD) renormalon ambiguity. We find alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1135 +- (0.0002)_expt +- (0.0005)_Omega_1 +- (0.0009)_pert with chi^2/dof = 0.9.

Phase Space Matching and Finite Lifetime Effects for Top-Pair Production Close to Threshold

The top-pair $t\bar t$ production cross section close to threshold in $e^+e^-$ collisions is strongly affected by the small lifetime of the top quark. Since the cross section is defined through final states containing the top decay products, a consistent definition of the cross section depends on prescriptions how these final states are accounted for the cross section. Experimentally, these prescriptions are implemented for example through cuts on kinematic quantities such as the reconstructed top quark invariant masses. As long as these cuts do not reject final states that can arise from the decay of a top and an anti-top quark with a small off-shellness compatible with the nonrelativistic power-counting, they can be implemented through imaginary phase space matching conditions in NRQCD. The prescription-dependent cross section can then be determined from the optical theorem using the $e^+e^-$ forward scattering amplitude. We compute the phase space matching conditions associated to cuts on the top and anti-top invariant masses at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) order and partially at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N${}^3$LL) order in the nonrelativistic expansion and, together with finite lifetime and electroweak effects known from previous work, analyze their numerical impact on the $t\bar t$ cross section. We show that the phase space matching contributions are essential to make reliable NRQCD predictions, particularly for energies below the peak region, where the cross section is small. We find that irreducible background contributions associated to final states that do not come from top decays are strongly suppressed and can be neglected for the theoretical predictions.

Nonrelativistic QCD for coloured scalar fields

We present an effective field theory suitable to describe a non-relativistic particle-antiparticle pair of heavy scalars based on the gauge group SU(3). Its formulation is analogous to that of "velocity NRQCD" (vNRQCD), a non-relativistic effective theory for heavy quark pairs. The matching conditions with scalar QCD and the renormalization group evolution of the effective theory are discussed. The non-relativistic framework proposed here suffices to compute scalar-antiscalar bound state energies at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) order and next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) threshold production of squarks in $e^+e^-$ and $γγ$ collisions, in particular of the lighter scalar top quark at a future Linear Collider.
