Straight-line trajectories on the Mucube

The dynamics of straight line flows on compact half-translation surfaces (surfaces formed by gluing Euclidean polygons edge-to-edge via translations possibly composed with rotation by $\pi$) has been widely studied due to their connections to polygonal billiards and Teichm\"uller theory. However, much less is known when the underlying surface is non-compact or infinite type. In this paper, we consider the straight line flow of the Mucube -- an infinite $\mathbb{Z}^3$-periodic half-translation square-tiled surface -- first written about by Coxeter and Petrie and more recently studied by Athreya--Lee and Guti\'errez-Romo--Lee--S\'anchez. We give a geometric description of the flow's periodic and drift orbits in terms of the Mucube's rigid symmetries, and we give a complete characterization of the set of directions in which the straight line flow is periodic on the Mucube -- first in terms of a genus one quotient and second in terms of an infinitely generated subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We use the latter characterization to obtain the Veech group (i.e. group of derivatives of affine diffeomorphisms) of the Mucube. Finally, we prove density of the sets of periodic and ergodic directions.

From Deposition Stress to Surface Reactivity: Strain-Dependent Hydrogen Evolution on Sputtered Platinum Thin Films

Strain has emerged as a promising approach for tuning electrocatalytic properties, yet its role in sputter-deposited thin films remains poorly understood. In this work, magnetron-sputtered platinum (Pt) thin films with different stress states were prepared by varying the sputter pressure. The resulting changes in microstructure, residual strain, and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity were investigated using complementary characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Structural analysis reveals a transition of (111)-textured Pt thin films from dense and smooth films at low pressures, to more porous microstructures with increased roughness at higher pressures. Electrochemical measurements show that films deposited at low sputter pressure exhibit the highest HER activity, while higher sputter pressures lead to reduced activity despite increased surface area. DFT calculations demonstrate that lattice strain alters hydrogen adsorption energetics and surface coverage on Pt(111), providing a mechanistic explanation for the observed activity trends. Overall, the results highlight that HER activity in sputtered Pt thin films is governed by the interplay of residual strain, microstructure, and hydrogen coverage.

Do code refactorings influence the merge effort?

In collaborative software development, multiple contributors frequently change the source code in parallel to implement new features, fix bugs, refactor existing code, and make other changes. These simultaneous changes need to be merged into the same version of the source code. However, the merge operation can fail, and developer intervention is required to resolve the conflicts. Studies in the literature show that 10 to 20 percent of all merge attempts result in conflicts, which require the manual developer's intervention to complete the process. In this paper, we concern about a specific type of change that affects the structure of the source code and has the potential to increase the merge effort: code refactorings. We analyze the relationship between the occurrence of refactorings and the merge effort. To do so, we applied a data mining technique called association rule extraction to find patterns of behavior that allow us to analyze the influence of refactorings on the merge effort. Our experiments extracted association rules from 40,248 merge commits that occurred in 28 popular open-source projects. The results indicate that: (i) the occurrence of refactorings increases the chances of having merge effort; (ii) the more refactorings, the greater the chances of effort; (iii) the more refactorings, the greater the effort; and (iv) parallel refactorings increase even more the chances of having effort, as well as the intensity of it. The results obtained may suggest behavioral changes in the way refactorings are implemented by developer teams. In addition, they can indicate possible ways to improve tools that support code merging and those that recommend refactorings, considering the number of refactorings and merge effort attributes.

An IoT Cloud and Big Data Architecture for the Maintenance of Home Appliances

Billions of interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices collect tremendous amounts of data from real-world scenarios. Big data is generating increasing interest in a wide range of industries. Once data is analyzed through compute-intensive Machine Learning (ML) methods, it can derive critical business value for organizations. Powerfulplatforms are essential to handle and process such massive collections of information cost-effectively and conveniently. This work introduces a distributed and scalable platform architecture that can be deployed for efficient real-world big data collection and analytics. The proposed system was tested with a case study for Predictive Maintenance of Home Appliances, where current and vibration sensors with high acquisition frequency were connected to washing machines and refrigerators. The introduced platform was used to collect, store, and analyze the data. The experimental results demonstrated that the presented system could be advantageous for tackling real-world IoT scenarios in a cost-effective and local approach.

Chemical functionalization, electronic and dielectric properties of hybrid organic-tin layers

Band gap tuning and dielectric properties of small organic ligands adsorbed on tin monolayers (stanene) have been investigated using first-principles calculations. Charge density analysis using density-functional theory shows that the ligands are chemisorbed on stanene and some of the groups can open a band gap in the originally metallic statene. Furthermore many-body GW calculations demonstrate that the dielectric properties of bare and ligand adsorbed stanene have a large anisotropy. Our findings of a finite gap opens a path for rational theoretical design of functionalized two-dimensional stanene.

How to hear the shape of a billiard table

The bounce spectrum of a polygonal billiard table is the collection of all bi-infinite sequences of edge labels corresponding to billiard trajectories on the table. We give methods for reconstructing from the bounce spectrum of a polygonal billiard table both the cyclic ordering of its edge labels and the sizes of its angles. We also show that it is impossible to reconstruct the exact shape of a polygonal billiard table from any finite collection of finite words from its bounce spectrum.
