Analysing Equilibrium States for Population Diversity

Population diversity is crucial in evolutionary algorithms as it helps with global exploration and facilitates the use of crossover. Despite many runtime analyses showing advantages of population diversity, we have no clear picture of how diversity evolves over time. We study how population diversity of $(μ+1)$ algorithms, measured by the sum of pairwise Hamming distances, evolves in a fitness-neutral environment. We give an exact formula for the drift of population diversity and show that it is driven towards an equilibrium state. Moreover, we bound the expected time for getting close to the equilibrium state. We find that these dynamics, including the location of the equilibrium, are unaffected by surprisingly many algorithmic choices. All unbiased mutation operators with the same expected number of bit flips have the same effect on the expected diversity. Many crossover operators have no effect at all, including all binary unbiased, respectful operators. We review crossover operators from the literature and identify crossovers that are neutral towards the evolution of diversity and crossovers that are not.

On Preparation Theorems for $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable functions

In this article we give strong versions for preparation theorems for $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable functions outgoing from methods of Lion and Rolin ($\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$ is the o-minimal structure generated by all restricted analytic functions and the global exponential function). By a deep model theoretic fact of Van den Dries, Macintyre and Marker every $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable function is piecewise given by $\mathcal{L}_{an}(\exp,\log)$-terms where $\mathcal{L}_{an}(\exp,\log)$ denotes the language of ordered rings augmented by all restricted analytic functions, the global exponential and the global logarithm. The idea is to consider log-analytic functions at first, i.e. functions which are iterated compositions from either side of globally subanalytic functions and the global logarithm, and then $\mathbb{R}_{an,exp}$-definable functions as compositions of log-analytic functions and the global exponential.

Restricted Log-Exp-Analytic Functions and some Differentiability Results

In this article we define restricted log-exp-analytic functions as compositions of log-analytic functions and exponentials whose logarithm are locally bounded. We prove that the derivative of a restricted log-exp-analytic function is again restricted log-exp-analytic and that such a function exhibits strong quasianalytic properties. We establish the parametric version of Tamm's theorem for this class of functions.

Differentiability Properties of Log-Analytic Functions

We show that the derivative of a log-analytic function is log-analytic. We prove that log-analytic functions exhibit strong quasianalytic properties. We establish the parametric version of Tamm's theorem for log-analytic functions.
