From Multi-Port Models to Cascade Structures: Optimization of Active Unilateral Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces

This paper develops a multi-port S-parameter framework for the analysis and optimization of stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) with unilateral active interconnections. By modeling each unit cell as a non-reciprocal two-port network, the resulting SIM exhibits a feed-forward structure that enables a recursive, cascade-like representation of the end-to-end transfer function while preserving electromagnetic accuracy. Based on this model, we derive an efficient gradient-based optimization algorithm with reduced computational complexity compared to conventional reciprocal SIM architectures. Numerical results, obtained from full-wave simulations, illustrate the trade-offs among inter-layer spacing, active gain, and SIM size in terms of channel diagonalization and achievable spectral efficiency.

Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM) in the Nonlinear Regime: A Multiport Network Model Approach

We present a physically consistent multiport framework for stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) with linear and explicit nonlinear terminations. The model provides closed-form input--output relations in the linear case and fixed-point forward evaluation in the nonlinear case, with adjoint-based gradients for optimization in both settings. Under stage-isolated SIM structure, complexity remains $\mathcal{O}(QK^3)$. In a 28 GHz near-field localization case study, nonlinear terminations improve transfer-function matching and reduce mean localization error, close to the ideal benchmark.

SIM-Aided Near-Field Channel and Localization Estimation With Dimensionality Reduction: A Multiport Network Theory Approach

The deployment of Extremely Large-Scale Antenna Arrays for 6G enables radiative near-field sensing but poses significant challenges in terms of hardware complexity and interference. Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIMs) address these limitations by enabling wave-domain dimensionality reduction. This paper proposes a rigorous SIM-aided framework for near-field channel and localization estimation based on Multiport Network Theory, which provides an electromagnetically consistent characterization accounting for mutual coupling and non-unilateral inter-layer propagation effects. An indirect estimation approach is adopted, where the SIM is optimized to perform analog spatial filtering by projecting the received signal onto a relevant subspace identified through coarse prior location information. Within this realistic setting, we analytically characterize the impact of SIM approximation errors on channel estimation and quantify the resulting effects on localization performance. The results show that the proposed architecture preserves the essential wavefront curvature information required for accurate near-field localization, achieving performance comparable to fully digital solutions while drastically reducing the number of radio-frequency chains.

Modeling, Optimization and Electromagnetic Validation of Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces by Using a Multiport Network Model

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) extend the concept of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces by cascading multiple programmable layers, enabling advanced electromagnetic wave transformations for communication and sensing applications. However, most existing optimization frameworks rely on simplified channel abstractions that may overlook key electromagnetic effects such as multiport coupling, circuit losses, and non-ideal hardware behavior. In this paper, we develop a modeling and optimization framework for SIMs based on a multiport network representation using scattering parameters. The proposed formulation captures realistic circuit characteristics and mutual interactions among SIM ports while remaining amenable to optimization. The resulting models are validated through electromagnetic simulations, enabling a systematic comparison between idealized and practical SIM configurations. Numerical results for communication and sensing scenarios confirm that the proposed framework provides accurate performance predictions and enables the effective design of SIM configurations under realistic electromagnetic conditions.

WMMSE resource allocation for FD-NOMA

Power and channel allocation in interference-limited systems is a key enabler for beyond 5G (B5G) technologies, such as multi-carrier full duplex non-orthogonal multiple access (FD-NOMA). In FD-NOMA systems power allocation is a very computationally intense non-convex problem due to the presence of strong interference and the integrality condition on channel allocation. In this paper, we propose an iterative power allocation algorithm based on the minimization of the weighted mean square error, which converges to a feasible allocation of the original problem. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has by far the lowest complexity among other state-of-the-art solutions. Moreover, they assess the validity of our approach showing performance close to the theoretical optimum.

A Novel Comprehensive Multiport Network Model for Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM) Characterization and Optimization

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) represent transformative technologies for next-generation wireless communications, offering advanced control over electromagnetic wave propagation. While RIS have been extensively studied, Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM), which extend the RIS concept to multi-layered systems, present significant modeling and optimization challenges. This work addresses these challenges by introducing an optimization framework for SIM that, unlike previous approaches, is based on a comprehensive model without relying on specific assumptions, allowing for broader applicability of the results. We first present a model based on multi-port network theory for characterizing a general electromagnetic collaborative object (ECO) and derive a framework for ECO optimization. We then introduce the SIM as an ECO with a specific architecture, offering insights into SIM optimization for various configurations and discussing the complexities associated with each case. Finally, we demonstrate that the comprehensive model considered in this work simplifies to the model traditionally used in the literature when the assumption of unilateral propagation between the levels of the SIM is made, and mutual coupling between the SIM elements is neglected. To assess the applicability of these assumptions, a case study focused on the realization of a 2D DFT was undertaken. In this context, we highlight that these assumptions introduce a significant mismatch between the SIM model and its behavior as described by the complete model, making these approximations inadequate for optimizing the SIM. Conversely, we show that employing the complete model proposed in this paper can yield excellent performance.

Metaprism Design for Wireless Communications: Angle-Frequency Analysis, Physical Realizability Constraints, and Performance Optimization

Recent advancements in smart radio environment technologies aim to enhance wireless network performance through the use of low-cost electromagnetic (EM) devices. Among these, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have garnered attention for their ability to modify incident waves via programmable scattering elements. An RIS is a nearly passive device, in which the tradeoff between performance, power consumption, and optimization overhead depend on how often the RIS needs to be reconfigured. This paper focuses on the metaprism (MTP), a static frequency-selective metasurface which relaxes the reconfiguration requirements of RISs and allows for the creation of different beams at various frequencies. In particular, we address the design of an ideal MTP based on its frequency-dependent reflection coefficients, defining the general properties necessary to achieve the desired beam steering function in the angle-frequency domain. We also discuss the limitations of previous studies that employed oversimplified models, which may compromise performance. Key contributions include a detailed exploration of the equivalence of the MTP to an ideal S-parameter multiport model and an analysis of its implementation using Foster's circuits. Additionally, we introduce a realistic multiport network model that incorporates aspects overlooked by ideal scattering models, along with an ad hoc optimization strategy for this model. The performance of the proposed optimization approach and circuits implementation are validated through simulations using a commercial full-wave EM simulator, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method.

RIS-Aided Covert Communications with Statistical CSI: A Multiport Network Theory Approach

A novel framework for covert communications aided by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) is proposed. In this general framework, the use of multiport network theory for modelling the RIS consider various aspects that traditional RIS models in communication theory often overlook, including mutual coupling between elements and the impact of structural scattering. Moreover, the transmitter has only limited knowledge about the channels of the warden and the intended receiver. The proposed approach is validated through numerical results, demonstrating that communication with the legitimate user is successfully achieved while satisfying the covertness constraint.

Power Minimization with Rate Constraints for Multi-User MIMO Systems with Large-Size RISs

This study focuses on the optimization of a single-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with multiple large-size reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). The overall transmit power is minimized by optimizing the precoding coefficients and the RIS configuration, with constraints on users' signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). The minimization problem is divided into two sub-problems and solved by means of an iterative alternating optimization (AO) approach. The first sub-problem focuses on finding the best precoder design. The second sub-problem optimizes the configuration of the RISs by partitioning them into smaller tiles. Each tile is then configured as a combination of pre-defined configurations. This allows the efficient optimization of RISs, especially in scenarios where the computational complexity would be prohibitive using traditional approaches. Simulation results show the good performance and limited complexity of the proposed method in comparison to benchmark schemes.

Design of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces by Using S-Parameter Multiport Network Theory -- Optimization and Full-Wave Validation

Multiport network theory has been proved to be a suitable abstraction model for analyzing and optimizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in an electromagnetically consistent manner, especially for studying the impact of the electromagnetic mutual coupling among radiating elements that are spaced less than half of the wavelength apart and for considering the interrelation between the amplitude and phase of the reflection coefficients. Both representations in terms of Z-parameter (impedance) and S-parameter (scattering) matrices are widely utilized. In this paper, we embrace multiport network theory for analyzing and optimizing the reradiation properties of RIS-aided channels, and provide four new contributions. (i) We offer a thorough comparison between the Z-parameter and S-parameter representations. This comparison allows us to unveil that typical scattering models utilized for RIS-aided channels ignore the structural scattering from an RIS, which is well documented in antenna theory. We show that the structural scattering results in an unwanted specular reflection. (ii) We develop an iterative algorithm for optimizing, in the presence of electromagnetic mutual coupling, the tunable loads of an RIS based on the S-parameters representation. We prove that small perturbations of the step size of the algorithm result in larger variations of the S-parameter matrix compared with the Z-parameter matrix, resulting in a faster convergence rate. (iii) We generalize the proposed algorithm to suppress the specular reflection due to the structural scattering, while maximizing the received power towards the direction of interest, and analyze the effectiveness and tradeoffs of the proposed approach. (iv) We validate the theoretical findings and algorithms with numerical simulations and a commercial full-wave electromagnetic simulator based on the method of moments.

MMSE Design of RIS-aided Communications

Consider a communication system in which a single antenna user equipment exchanges information with a multi-antenna base station via a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the presence of spatially correlated channels and electromagnetic interference (EMI). To exploit the attractive advantages of RIS technology, accurate configuration of its reflecting elements is crucial. In this paper, we use statistical knowledge of channels and EMI to optimize the RIS elements for i) accurate channel estimation and ii) reliable data transmission. In both cases, our goal is to determine the RIS coefficients that minimize the mean square error, resulting in the formulation of two non-convex problems that share the same structure. To solve these two problems, we present an alternating optimization approach that reliably converges to a locally optimal solution. The incorporation of the diagonally scaled steepest descent algorithm, derived from Newton's method, ensures fast convergence with manageable complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under various propagation conditions. Notably, it shows significant advantages over existing alternatives that depend on a sub-optimal configuration of the RIS and are derived on the basis of different criteria.

Two-Timescale Transmission Design and RIS Optimization for Integrated Localization and Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have tremendous potential to boost communication performance, especially when the line-of-sight (LOS) path between the user equipment (UE) and base station (BS) is blocked. To control the RIS, channel state information (CSI) is needed, which entails significant pilot overhead. To reduce this overhead and the need for frequent RIS reconfiguration, we propose a novel framework for integrated localization and communications, where RIS configurations are fixed during location coherence intervals, while BS precoders are optimized every channel coherence interval. This framework leverages accurate location information obtained with the aid of several RISs as well as novel RIS optimization and channel estimation methods. Performance in terms of localization accuracy, channel estimation error, and achievable rate demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Analysis and Optimization of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Based on $S$-Parameters Multiport Network Theory

In this paper, we consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and model it by using multiport network theory. We first compare the representation of RIS by using $Z$-parameters and $S$-parameters, by proving their equivalence and discussing their distinct features. Then, we develop an algorithm for optimizing the RIS configuration in the presence of electromagnetic mutual coupling. We show that the proposed algorithm based on optimizing the $S$-parameters results in better performance than existing algorithms based on optimizing the $Z$-parameters. This is attributed to the fact that small perturbations of the step size of the proposed algorithm result in larger variations of the $S$-parameters, hence increasing the convergence speed of the algorithm.

Two-Timescale Joint Precoding Design and RIS Optimization for User Tracking in Near-Field MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel framework that aims to jointly design the reflection coefficients of multiple RISs and the precoding strategy of a single BS to optimize the self-tracking of the position and the velocity of a single multi-antenna UE that moves either in the far- or near-field region. Differently from the literature, and to keep the overall complexity affordable, we assume that RIS optimization is performed less frequently than localization and precoding adaptation. The proposed procedure leads to minimize the inverse of the received power in the UE position uncertainty area between two subsequent optimization steps. The optimal RIS and precoder strategy are compared with the classical beam-focusing strategy and with a scheme that maximizes the communication rate. It is shown that if the RISs are optimized for communications, their configuration is suboptimal when used for tracking purposes. Numerical results show that in typical indoor environments with only one BS and a few RISs operating on millimeter waves, high location accuracy in the range of less than half a meter can be achieved.

Spatial Multiplexing in Near Field MIMO Channels with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

We consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel in the presence of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Specifically, our focus is on analyzing the spatial multiplexing gains in line-of-sight and low-scattering MIMO channels in the near field. We prove that the channel capacity is achieved by diagonalizing the end-to-end transmitter-RIS-receiver channel, and applying the water-filling power allocation to the ordered product of the singular values of the transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels. The obtained capacity-achieving solution requires an RIS with a non-diagonal matrix of reflection coefficients. Under the assumption of nearly-passive RIS, i.e., no power amplification is needed at the RIS, the water-filling power allocation is necessary only at the transmitter. We refer to this design of RIS as a linear, nearly-passive, reconfigurable electromagnetic object (EMO). In addition, we introduce a closed-form and low-complexity design for RIS, whose matrix of reflection coefficients is diagonal with unit-modulus entries. The reflection coefficients are given by the product of two focusing functions: one steering the RIS-aided signal towards the mid-point of the MIMO transmitter and one steering the RIS-aided signal towards the mid-point of the MIMO receiver. We prove that this solution is exact in line-of-sight channels under the paraxial setup. With the aid of extensive numerical simulations in line-of-sight (free-space) channels, we show that the proposed approach offers performance (rate and degrees of freedom) close to that obtained by numerically solving non-convex optimization problems at a high computational complexity. Also, we show that it provides performance close to that achieved by the EMO (non-diagonal RIS) in most of the considered case studies.

Designing a reliable and low-latency LoRaWAN solution for environmental monitoring in factories at major accident risk

In this article, we propose a reliable and low-latency Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) solution for environmental monitoring in factories at major accident risk (FMAR). In particular, a low power wearable device for sensing the toxic inflammable gases inside an industrial plant is designed with the purpose of avoiding peculiar risks and unwanted accidents to occur. Moreover, the detected data have to be urgently and reliably delivered to remote server to trigger preventive immediate actions so as to improve the machine operation. In these settings, LoRaWAN has been identified as the most proper communications technology to the needs owing to the availability of off the shelf devices and software. Hence, we assess the technological limits of LoRaWAN in terms of latency and reliability and we propose a fully LoRaWAN compliant solution to overcome these limits. The proposed solution envisages coordinated end device (ED) transmissions through the use of Downlink Control Packets (DCPs). Experimental results validate the proposed method in terms of service requirements for the considered FMAR scenario.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Aided RAN Slicing Enforcement for B5G Latency Sensitive Services

The combination of cloud computing capabilities at the network edge and artificial intelligence promise to turn future mobile networks into service- and radio-aware entities, able to address the requirements of upcoming latency-sensitive applications. In this context, a challenging research goal is to exploit edge intelligence to dynamically and optimally manage the Radio Access Network Slicing (that is a less mature and more complex technology than fifth-generation Network Slicing) and Radio Resource Management, which is a very complex task due to the mostly unpredictably nature of the wireless channel. This paper presents a novel architecture that leverages Deep Reinforcement Learning at the edge of the network in order to address Radio Access Network Slicing and Radio Resource Management optimization supporting latency-sensitive applications. The effectiveness of our proposal against baseline methodologies is investigated through computer simulation, by considering an autonomous-driving use-case.

Deep Reinforcement Learning for URLLC data management on top of scheduled eMBB traffic

With the advent of 5G and the research into beyond 5G (B5G) networks, a novel and very relevant research issue is how to manage the coexistence of different types of traffic, each with very stringent but completely different requirements. In this paper we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to slice the available physical layer resources between ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) and enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) traffic. Specifically, in our setting the time-frequency resource grid is fully occupied by eMBB traffic and we train the DRL agent to employ proximal policy optimization (PPO), a state-of-the-art DRL algorithm, to dynamically allocate the incoming URLLC traffic by puncturing eMBB codewords. Assuming that each eMBB codeword can tolerate a certain limited amount of puncturing beyond which is in outage, we show that the policy devised by the DRL agent never violates the latency requirement of URLLC traffic and, at the same time, manages to keep the number of eMBB codewords in outage at minimum levels, when compared to other state-of-the-art schemes.
