Emergence of Gravity's Dynamical and Topological Sectors from Pre-geometry

We identify the complete set of fundamental building blocks for a 4D pre-geometric theory of gravity. Based on a gauge theory of $SO(1,4)$ or $SO(2,3)$ coupled to a Higgs-like field under the rigid constraint of general covariance in the unbroken phase, these building blocks - $\mathcal{L}_\text{MM}$, $\mathcal{L}_\text{W}$, $\mathcal{L}_{J}$, $\mathcal{L}_\theta$ and $\mathcal{L}_\vartheta$ - constitute the minimal generating set of independent field monomials from which any pre-geometric action, including arbitrary functionals thereof, can be constructed. While the most general pre-geometric theory can extend beyond linear combinations, these five irreducible invariants serve as the 'atomic' constituents of all possible pre-geometric dynamics. Upon spontaneous symmetry breaking, they collectively generate an emergent gravitational theory consisting of the Einstein-Hilbert action, the cosmological constant term and all 4D topological invariants: the Gauss-Bonnet, Pontryagin, Holst and Nieh-Yan terms. The unification of gravity's dynamical and topological sectors from a common pre-geometric source represents the central result of this work. We also uncover a see-saw mechanism linking the Planck mass and the cosmological constant, as well as several novel relations for the coupling constants of the topological sector, inclusive of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter. This framework establishes the pre-geometric foundations from which all aspects of gravitation can dynamically emerge, providing a unified starting point for quantum gravity, dark energy phenomenology and the study of topological phases in gravitational theories.

DESI and Dynamical Dark Energy from Extended Pre-geometric Gravity

We consider the simplest quadratic extension of MacDowell-Mansouri pre-geometric gravity preserving the topological pre-volume form symmetry. After symmetry breaking, it becomes $(\mathrm{Lovelock})^2$ gravity, dual to a Galileon-like Horndeski scalar-tensor theory. The gravitational Higgs mechanism forces the Gauss-Bonnet coupling to be inversely proportional to the bare cosmological constant. The quadratic correction renders the gravitational $\theta$-angle dynamical in the form of a gravi-axion, whose effective mass sets the dark energy scale, thus naturally realizing a dynamical dark energy. The model fits DESI's BAO+FS data exceptionally well ($\chi^2_{\rm red} = 1.394$), deviating from $\Lambda\mathrm{CDM}$ by only a few percent in the gravitational slip parameter $\gamma(z)$ with stable tensor perturbations. This analysis establishes a concrete, testable bridge between pre-geometric gravity and cosmic acceleration.

$\mathcal{H}$olographic $\mathcal{N}$aturalness and Information See-Saw Mechanism for Neutrinos

The microscopic origin of the de Sitter entropy remains a central puzzle in quantum gravity related to the cosmological constant problem. Within $\mathcal{H}$olographic $\mathcal{N}$aturalness, we propose this entropy is carried by light, coherent degrees of freedom - "hairons" - emerging as moduli of gravitational instantons on orbifolds. From the Euclidean de Sitter instanton ($S^4$), we construct a new class of orbifold gravitational instantons, $S^4/\mathbb{Z}_N$, where $N$ corresponds to the de Sitter entropy. The moduli space dimension scales linearly with $N$, and we identify these moduli with hairon fields. A $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry from Wilson loops ensures mode distinguishability, yielding the correct entropy. Hairons acquire a mass of the order of the Hubble scale with negligible interactions, suggesting the de Sitter vacuum is a Bose-Einstein condensate of these excitations. We then unify the neutrino mass generation with the cosmological constant via gravitational topology. The small neutrino mass emerges naturally without new physics beyond the Standard Model. The gravitational Chern-Simons structure and anomaly force a topological Higgs mechanism, leading to neutrino condensation via $S^4/\mathbb{Z}_N$ instantons. The topological degrees $N \sim M_\text{P}^2/\Lambda \sim 10^{120}$ provide both a holographic entropy counting and a $1/N$ information see-saw mechanism for neutrino masses. Predictions: (i) neutrino superfluid condensation forming Cooper pairs below meV as cold dark matter; (ii) resolution of the strong CP problem via a QCD composite axion; (iii) time-varying neutrino masses tracking th dark energy evolution; (iv) signatures in astroparticle physics, ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and high magnetic field experiments.

$\mathcal{H}$olographic $\mathcal{N}$aturalness and Pre-Geometric Gravity

The cosmological constant (CC, $\Lambda$) problem represents a remarkable discrepancy of about 120 orders of magnitude between the observed dark energy and its natural expectation from quantum field theory. This paper synthesizes two paradigms - holographic naturalness ($\mathcal{HN}$) and pre-geometric gravity (PGG) - to propose a unified resolution. The $\mathcal{HN}$ framework posits that CC stability is not a matter of radiative corrections but of quantum information and entropy. The large entropy $S_\text{dS}\sim M_\text{P}^2/\Lambda$ of the de Sitter (dS) vacuum acts as an entropic barrier, exponentially suppressing destabilizing quantum transitions. This explains why the universe remains in a high-entropy, low-CC state. We embed this within PGG, where spacetime geometry and the Einstein-Hilbert action emerge dynamically from the spontaneous symmetry breaking SO($1,4$)$\rightarrow$SO($1,3$), driven by a Higgs-like field $\phi^A$. Both $M_\text{P}$ and $\Lambda$ are generated from more fundamental parameters. Crucially, we establish a direct correspondence between the VEV $v$ of the pre-geometric Higgs field and the de Sitter entropy: $S_\text{dS}\sim v$ (or $v^3$). Thus, the field generating spacetime also encodes its information content. The smallness of $\Lambda$ follows directly from the largeness of $S_\text{dS}$, a manifestation of a large $v$. The CC is stable because a large-entropy state's decay is exponentially suppressed. Our study shows new semi-classical quantum gravity effects dynamically generate "hairons", particles whose mass is tied to the CC. The instability of the dS space, driven by a condensate evolution, points to a dynamical origin for dark energy. This framework inextricably links the emergence of geometry, the hierarchy of scales and the quantum-information structure of spacetime, providing a novel path toward solving the CC problem.

Machine Learning for Multi-messenger Probes of New Physics and Cosmology: A Review and Perspective

The multi-messenger exploration of dark matter and physics beyond the Standard Model has emerged as a central direction in modern astro-particle physics, particularly following the discovery of gravitational waves. In this work, we present a comprehensive review and forward-looking perspective on machine-learning-enhanced multi-messenger approaches, combining information from gravitational waves, cosmic rays, gamma rays, neutrinos, and collider experiments. We summarize the current state of the field, discuss recent methodological developments, and outline a coherent research program aimed at integrating heterogeneous datasets within a unified inference framework. Our collaboration proposes here a plan for forthcoming analyses aiming at extracting information on the properties and interactions of dark matter, and finally on its genesis, combining multi-messenger astronomy techniques and inputs from laboratory physics. The main objectives planned in this line of research comprise: i) the multi-messenger analysis of new physics in cosmology, including mainly, but not only, several different models of dark matter; ii) the phenomenology of new physics signatures in ground-based cosmic rays experiments, with cross-correlation to the corresponding physical, astrophysical and cosmological observations; iii) the development of machine learning methods for data analysis in ground-based cosmic rays experiments, in light of the new physics signatures. We note that several groups have explored the use of multi-messenger observations, including gravitational waves, to probe alternative dark matter candidates. The present work builds on these developments by focusing on the role of machine learning in integrating heterogeneous datasets. We foresee that such a cross-fertilizing approach will represent the right path to extract information about the main questions left in fundamental physics.

The Axion-Photon Mixing and the Extragalactic Magnetic Background: Plateau Regimes, Resonances, and Non-Gaussian Boosts

We present an analytical treatment of Axion-Like-Particle (ALP)--photon mixing with extragalactic background light (EBL) attenuation for constant, Gaussian-stochastic, and non-Gaussian magnetic field configurations--with direct implications for Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations such as LHAASO, HAWC, and CTA experiments. For constant fields, we derive exact probabilities and identify a perturbative plateau regime where photon survival scales as quartic order of magnetic field, isolating the four-point magnetic correlation as a sensitive probe of non-Gaussianity. For Gaussian stochastic fields, we obtain--for the first time--analytical formulas for non-exponential-decay components in the strong-attenuation regime. Contrary to the widely used domain-like model, photon survival is suppressed by 4-6 orders of magnitude, while both conversion and survival probabilities exhibit distinct multi-peak structures from mass-equal resonance, stochastic resonance, and EBL attenuation. Extending to non-Gaussian fields, we show that non-Gaussianity can enhance photon survival by several orders of magnitude relative to the Gaussian case, potentially explaining the unexpectedly VHE photon event observed by LHAASO. Our results demonstrate that stochastic magnetic fields cannot be reduced to domain-like coherence without losing essential physics, and that VHE gamma-ray spectra encode observable information about both the power spectrum and non-Gaussian structure of intergalactic magnetic fields--critical as next-generation observatories push toward PeV sensitivities.

Solution to the Cosmological Constant Problem from Pre-geometric Gravity

We present a novel solution to the cosmological constant (CC) problem that requires no fine-tunings nor anthropic reasoning. In pre-geometric gravity (PGG), spacetime emerges from the spontaneous breaking of a fundamental gauge symmetry. This mechanism dynamically generates general relativity while also revealing a deep connection: the topological Gauss-Bonnet coupling of the theory scales precisely as the de Sitter entropy, an enormous number which reflects the information content of our universe. This coupling acts as a gravitational $\theta$-angle parameter, forcing the CC to become quantized into discrete topological sectors. The symmetry-breaking dynamics naturally selects the sector corresponding to the observed vacuum energy. The selected vacuum state is stabilized by the extremely large potential barrier of the pre-geometric Higgs field, which effectively seals it off from quantum tunneling transitions to other topological sectors. The PGG framework thus provides a dynamical explanation for the smallness of the CC, linking gravity, topology and quantum information in a unified picture.

Mathematical Anatomy of Neutrino Decoherence in Red Turbulence: A Fractional Calculus Approach

We develop an exact framework for neutrino decoherence in power-law correlated turbulent matter, as encountered in core-collapse supernovae. Employing the Nakajima--Zwanzig projection technique, we derive an exact non-Markovian master equation for the neutrino density matrix. For kernels \( K(t) \propto t^{-\nu} \), the spectral index \(\nu\) characterizes the correlation structure: smaller (including negative) values of \(\nu\) correspond to stronger long-range correlations. To treat ultraviolet singularities for \( \nu \geq 1 \) without spoiling the fractional structure, we use a renormalization prescription based on Hadamard finite parts and analytic continuation. The exact Laplace-space solution for the survival probability is obtained. In the high-density matter basis relevant to supernovae, the solution is expressed through Mittag-Leffler functions, establishing a direct link to anomalous diffusion phenomena. For negative spectral indices (\( \nu < 0 \)), the memory integral corresponds to a higher-order fractional operator. Our work clarifies how spectral index, renormalization scale, and decoherence efficiency interrelate, providing a complete analytical description and practical tools for supernova neutrino simulations. The fractional calculus formulation reveals fundamental mathematical connections between neutrino flavor evolution and other systems governed by long-range temporal correlations.

Intermittent Turbulence, Fast Flavor Conversion, and Observable Supernova Probes

Fast flavor conversion (FFC) in core-collapse supernovae is usually analyzed in homogeneous backgrounds or with smooth stochastic turbulence closures. We construct an exact linear benchmark in which the matter-noise memory kernel is instead generated by a finite She--Leveque log-Poisson cascade. Projecting the marginal FFC channel onto this kernel gives a causal Volterra equation whose non-Markovian memory closes into a finite local system. The resulting Laplace-space resolvent is rational, with one pole pair for each cascade level, so the dispersion relation, characteristic polynomial, and time-domain solution can be checked analytically. We then connect this benchmark to the realization-level toy model and gain-region heating proxy used in the supplementary derivation. For the updated intermittent choice $\delta\rho/\langle\rho\rangle=0.4$, $\bar\lambda/\mu=1$, and hence $\kappa_0=0.16$, the representative $N=2$, $r=2$ cascade gives $\sigma_{\rm int}^2=1.124$ and an intermittent conversion fraction $1-P_{\rm base}\simeq0.455$. The older weaker normalization $\kappa_0=0.05$ gives $1-P_{\rm base}\simeq0.324$. The corresponding Mori-like heating ratios are $Q_{\rm int}/Q_{\rm hom}=1.060$ and $1.041$, whereas the Wang/Fornax-like ratios are $0.855$ and $0.899$. Thus intermittency mainly controls the conversion fraction, while the neutrino spectral hierarchy controls the sign of the heating correction.

(Lovelock)$^2$ inflation: explaining the ACT data and equivalence to Higgs-Gauss-Bonnet inflation

We revisit the Starobinsky model of inflation in light of recent data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), which indicates a potential preference for a slightly larger scalar spectral index $n_s$ than predicted by the standard $R^2$ scenario. We demonstrate that a natural one-parameter generalization to a quadratic model $\sim L+L^2$ in the Lovelock invariant $L=R+\frac{\alpha}{4}{\cal G}$ ($\cal G$ is the Gauss--Bonnet term), can effectively resolve this minor tension. Scalar-tensor formulation of this theory yields an Einstein-frame Starobinsky-type scalar potential augmented by Gauss--Bonnet and derivative couplings, which modify the inflationary slow-roll dynamics. We show that a non-zero coupling $\alpha$ for the Gauss-Bonnet term can shift $(n_s, r)$ along a trajectory that brings the predictions into better agreement with the ACT likelihood. We also find that $L+L^2$ gravity, in its scalar-tensor formulation, is equivalent to Higgs inflation coupled to the Gauss--Bonnet term, and belongs to the Horndeski/galileon class of modified gravities. This work establishes the quadratic $f(L)$ gravity as a compelling and physically motivated extension that preserves the successes of Starobinsky inflation while improving its fit to modern precision cosmological data.

Emergent Gravity from a Spontaneously Broken Gauge Symmetry: a Pre-geometric Prospective

We explore the paradigm of pre-geometric gravity, where spacetime geometry and the gravitational field are not fundamental but emerge from the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of a larger gauge symmetry. Specifically, we consider a gauge theory based on the de Sitter $SO(1,4)$ or anti-de Sitter $SO(3,2)$ group, formulated on a manifold without a prior metric structure. General covariance is maintained by constructing Lagrangian densities using the Levi-Civita symbol. The SSB is triggered by an internal vector field $\phi^A$, which reduces the symmetry to the Lorentz group $SO(1,3)$ and dynamically generates a spacetime metric. We analyze two specific models: the MacDowell-Mansouri formulation, which yields the Einstein-Hilbert action plus a cosmological constant and a Gauss-Bonnet term, and the Wilczek model, which produces a pure Einstein-Hilbert action with a cosmological constant. In both cases, the observed Planck mass and the small cosmological constant emerge from a see-saw mechanism dependent on the symmetry-breaking scale. We then present the Hamiltonian formulation of this pre-geometric theory, demonstrating that it possesses three number of physical degrees of freedom, corresponding to a massless graviton and a massive scalar. Integrating out the massive scalar, the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian of General Relativity is obtained after SSB. This establishes a foundational bridge between pre-geometric theories and canonical quantum gravity approaches like Loop Quantum Gravity, and allows for the formulation of a pre-geometric Wheeler-DeWitt equation.

Domain Wall formation from $Z_2$ spontaneous symmetry breaking/restoration in Scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

This study offers a detailed analysis of domain wall formation and its cosmological consequences in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity coupled to a scalar field. A central aspect of the model is the scalar field Lagrangian's ability to spontaneously break and restore its $Z_2$ discrete symmetry. This spontaneous symmetry breaking is a fundamental prerequisite for topological defect formation. In this context, domain walls arise as kink-like, solitonic solutions that interpolate between the distinct vacuum states of the theory. We perform a detailed numerical analysis of the dynamics of a neutral scalar field non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, exploring its behavior across different cosmological backgrounds. Our results show that coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet term enables the formation of static domain walls with a fixed proper distance within a de Sitter (inflationary) background. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to a radiation-dominated epoch, where we identify that the cosmic expansion causes the "melting" of these domain walls. To assess the potential observational signatures of this scenario, we calculate the predicted spectrum of stochastic gravitational waves generated by the network dynamics using {\it CosmoLattice} package. We also examine the possible generation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) associated with collapsing domain walls. Regrettably, our calculations indicate that the direct observational detection of such domain walls from this model lies beyond the reach of foreseeable experiments. Our results constitute a No-Go argument against the generation of PBHs as well as of large amplitude GW signals from domain walls in a Scalar-EGB spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism.

Exotic PeVatrons as sources of ultra-high-energy gamma rays

We explore novel classes of exotic astrophysical sources capable of producing ultra-high-energy gamma rays extending beyond the PeV scale, motivated by quantum gravity scenarios and dark matter phenomenology. These sources include: ultra-spinning black hole vortex-string systems; exotic compact objects such as boson star, axion star and Q-ball. Such Exotica generate powerful magnetic fields through interactions with millicharged dark matter, enabling particle acceleration mechanisms that surpass the energy limits of conventional astrophysical sources like pulsar wind nebulae and supernova remnants. We demonstrate that such exotic PeVatrons could be distributed throughout our Galaxy and may be detectable by current (LHAASO, HAWC) and next-generation (CTA) gamma-ray observatories.

Emergent Gravity from Topological Quantum Field Theory: Stochastic Gradient Flow Perspective away from the Quantum Gravity Problem

We propose a scenario according to which the ultraviolet completion of General Relativity is realized through a stochastic gradient flow towards a topological BF theory. Specifically, we consider the stochastic gradient flow of a pre-geometric theory proposed by Wilczek. Its infrared limit exists, and corresponds to a fixed point where stochastic fluctuations vanish. Diffeomorphism symmetries are restored in this limit, where the theory is classical and expressed by the Einstein-Hilbert action. The infrared phase then corresponds to the classical theory of General Relativity, the quantization of which becomes meaningless. Away from the infrared limit, in the pre-geometric phase of the stochastic gradient flow, the relevant fields of the Wilczek theory undergo stochastic fluctuations. The theory can be quantized perturbatively, generating corrections to the classical Einstein-Hilbert action. The stochastic gradient flow also possesses an ultraviolet fixed point. The theory flows to a topological BF action, to which non-perturbative quantization methods can be applied. Two phase transitions occur along the thermal time dynamics, being marked by: i) the breakdown of the topological BF symmetries in the ultraviolet regime, which originates the pre-geometric phase described by the Wilczek theory; ii) the breakdown of the parental symmetries characterizing the Wilczek theory, from which General Relativity emerges. The problem of quantizing the Einstein-Hilbert action of gravity finally becomes redundant.

Curvature corrections to Starobinsky inflation can explain the ACT results

We investigate the impact of curvature corrections to Starobinsky inflation in light of the latest observational results from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). While the pure Starobinsky model remains a compelling candidate for cosmic inflation, we explore how the higher-order curvature terms $R^3$, $R^{4}$ and $R^{3/2}$ modify the inflationary predictions. Using the scalar-tensor formulation of $f(R)$ gravity, we derive the effective scalar potentials and compute the resulting scalar tilt $n_s$, its running index $\alpha_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We show that those curvature corrections can shift the predictions to align better with the ACT data, thus providing a possible resolution to a minor discrepancy between the standard Starobinsky model and ACT observations. Our findings suggest that the modified Starobinsky models with the higher-order curvature terms offer a viable pathway to reconciling inflationary predictions with precision cosmological measurements. At the same time, measuring or constraining primordial tensor modes can help to discriminate between these corrections.

Hamiltonian Analysis of Pre-geometric Gravity

The Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity can arise from a mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking within the context of pre-geometric gauge theories. In this work, we develop the Hamiltonian analysis of such theories. By making contact with the ADM formalism, we show that all the results of canonical General Relativity are correctly recovered in the IR limit of the spontaneously broken phase. We then apply Dirac's algorithm to study the algebra of constraints and determine the number of degrees of freedom in the UV limit of the unbroken phase. We also discuss possible pathways toward a UV completion of General Relativity, including a pre-geometric generalisation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and an extended BF formulation of the pre-geometric theory.

Excess Radiation from Axion-Photon Conversion

Two notable anomalies in radio observations -- the excess radiation in the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the cosmic microwave background, revealed by ARCADE2, and the twice-deeper absorption trough of the global 21cm line, identified by EDGES -- remain unresolved. These phenomena may have a shared origin, as the enhancement of the 21cm absorption trough could arise from excess heating. We investigate this scenario through the framework of axion-like particles (ALPs), showing that the resonant conversion of ALPs into photons can produce a photon abundance sufficient to resolve both anomalies simultaneously. Our model naturally explains the observed radio excess between 0.4 and 10GHz while also enhances the 21cm absorption feature at 78MHz. Furthermore, it predicts a novel power-law scaling of the radio spectrum above 0.5GHz and an additional absorption trough below 30MHz, which could be verified through cross-detection in upcoming experiments.

Gravity from Pre-geometry

The gravitational interaction, as described by the Einstein-Cartan theory, is shown to emerge as the by-product of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a gauge symmetry in a pre-geometric four-dimensional spacetime. Starting from a formulation \`a la Yang-Mills on an SO(1,4) or SO(3,2) principal bundle and not accounting for a spacetime metric, the Einstein-Hilbert action is recovered after the identification of the effective spacetime metric and spin connection for the residual SO(1,3) gauge symmetry of the spontaneously broken phase - i.e. the stabiliser of the SO(1,4) or SO(3,2) gauge group. Thus, the two fundamental tenets of General Relativity, i.e. diffeomorphism invariance and the equivalence principle, can arise from a more fundamental gauge principle. The two mass parameters that characterise Einstein gravity, namely the Planck mass and the cosmological constant, are likewise shown to be emergent, with the correct sign for the cosmological constant depending on whether the fundamental gauge group is taken to be either the de Sitter or the anti-de Sitter group. The phase transition from the unbroken to the spontaneously broken phase is expected to happen close to the Planck temperature. This is conjectured to be dynamically driven by a scalar field that implements a Higgs mechanism, hence providing mass to new particles, with consequences for cosmology and high-energy physics. The couplings of gravity to matter are discussed after drawing up a dictionary that interconnects pre-geometric and effective geometric quantities. In the unbroken phase where the fundamental gauge symmetry is restored, the theory is potentially power-counting renormalisable without matter, offering a novel path towards a UV completion of Einstein gravity.
