Classical and quantum properties of cylindrically polarized states of light

We investigate theoretical properties of beams of light with non-uniform polarization patterns. Specifically, we determine all possible configurations of cylindrically polarized modes (CPMs) of the electro-magnetic field, calculate their total angular momentum and highlight the subtleties of their structure. Furthermore, a hybrid spatio-polarization description for such modes is introduced and developed. In particular, two independent Poincaré spheres have been introduced to represent simultaneously the polarization and spatial degree of freedom of CPMs. Possible mode-to-mode transformations accomplishable with the help of conventional polarization and spatial phase retarders are shown within this representation. Moreover, the importance of these CPMs in the quantum optics domain due to their classical features is highlighted.

Goos-Haenchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts of a nondiffracting Bessel beam

Goos-Haenchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts are diffractive corrections to geometrical optics that have been extensively studied for a Gaussian beam that is reflected or transmitted by a dielectric interface. Propagating in free space before and after reflection or transmission, such a Gaussian beam spreads due to diffraction. We address here the question how the Goos-Haenchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts behave for a ``nondiffracting'' Bessel beam.

Poincaré sphere representation for classical inseparable Bell-like states of the electromagnetic field

Classical beams of light with non-uniform polarization patterns (e.g. radially and azimuthally polarized doughnut beams) may exhibit quantum-like features as, for instance, inseparability. We establish an exact correspondence between radially and azimuthally polarized classical modes of the electromagnetic field and the two-qubit quantum Bell states. We demonstrate the existence of a special representation for such classical modes by means of a pair of Poincaré spheres. Points on these spheres are described by Stokes parameters associated with such modes, and their explicit expressions are given.

Transverse angular momentum of photons

We develop the quantum theory of transverse angular momentum of light beams. The theory applies to paraxial and quasi-paraxial photon beams in vacuum, and reproduces the known results for classical beams when applied to coherent states of the field. Both the Poynting vector, alias the linear momentum, and the angular momentum quantum operators of a light beam are calculated including contributions from first-order transverse derivatives. This permits a correct description of the energy flow in the beam and the natural emergence of both the spin and the angular momentum of the photons. We show that for collimated beams of light, orbital angular momentum operators do not satisfy the standard commutation rules. Finally, we discuss the application of our theory to some concrete cases.

Geometric Spin Hall Effect of Light

We describe a novel phenomenon occurring when a polarized Gaussian beam of light is observed in a Cartesian reference frame whose axes are not parallel to the direction of propagation of the beam. Such phenomenon amounts to an intriguing spin-dependent shift of the position of the center of the beam, with manners akin to the spin Hall effect of light. We demonstrate that this effect is unavoidable when the light beam possesses a nonzero transverse angular momentum.

The reflection of a Maxwell-Gaussian beam by a planar surface

The reflection of a three-dimensional vectorial Maxwell-Gaussian beam by a planar surface is studied. The surface is characterized by its complex reflection coefficients $r_s(\bk)$ and $r_p(\bk)$ for TE and TM electromagnetic plane waves of wavevector $\bk$, respectively. The field impinging upon the reflecting surface is modeled as a quasi-monochromatic fundamental Gaussian beam suitably modified in order to satisfy Maxwell equations (Maxwell-Gaussian beam). Analytical expressions, correct up to the second order in a perturbation expansion, are given for the reflected electric and magnetic field, respectively. We found that first order terms in the perturbation expansion account for a longitudinal shift (Goos-Hänchen effect) of the whole reflected beam, while second order terms modifies the transverse shape of the beam which is, at this order, no longer cylindrically symmetric.

Depolarizing power and polarization entropy of light scattering media: experiment and theory

We experimentally investigate the depolarizing power and the polarization entropy of a broad class of scattering optical media. By means of polarization tomography, these quantities are derived from an effective Mueller matrix, which is introduced through a formal description of the multi-mode detection scheme we use, as recently proposed by Aiello and Woerdman (arXiv:quant-ph/0407234). This proposal emphasized an intriguing universality in the polarization aspects of classical as well as quantum light scattering; in this contribution we demonstrate experimentally that this universality is obeyed by a surprisingly wide class of depolarizing media. This, in turn, provides the experimentalist with a useful characterization of the polarization properties of any scattering media, as well as a universal criterion for the validity of the measured data.

Input-Output Relations in Optical Cavities: a Simple Point of View

In this work we present a very simple approach to input-output relations in optical cavities, limiting ourselves to one- and two-photon states of the field. After field quantization, we derive the non-unitary transformation between {\em Inside} and {\em Outside} annihilation and creation operators. Then we express the most general two-photon state generated by {\em Inside} creation operators, through base states generated by {\em Outside} creation operators. After renormalization of coefficients of inside two-photon state, we calculate the outside photon-number probability distribution in a general case. Finally we treat with some detail the single mode and symmetrical cavity case.

Horizontal Tau air showers from mountains in deep valley. Traces of UHECR neutrino tau

Ultra High Energy (UHE) Tau neutrino may lead to a very peculiar imprint in future underground $Km^3$ detectors in water and ice as well as in air: rarest secondary tau tracks and decay which may exceed the muon ones. Indeed Bremsstrahlung at high energy lead to longer tracks for heavier leptons. Radiation lenght grows nearly with the square of the lepton mass. Indeed electrons are too light and their trace in matter (liquid or rock) is negligible (tens of centimeters); muons are much better observed, while tau are too short life time and too short range to be found. However, because relativistic time expansion, UHE tau traces in matter, above $10^{17} eV$, are relativistically boosted overcoming the corresponding muon tracks, already bounded by bremsstrahlung logarithmic regime. The tau crossing for Kms in water or ice may be confused with common muon tracks; their tau decay may be misunderstood as muonic catastrophic bremsstrahlung interactions. To economize UHE tau discovery, we suggest to look the tau decay in air into the deep valleys mountains, like Canyons or deep in excavation mines where horizontal air showers induce fluorescent or Cerenkov lights. The mountain valley width screens from horizontal secondary muons. The valley height increases the solid angle view. The horizontal air Kms-size gap offer a strong discriminator to filter UHE muons against tau. Tens event a year at PeV (W resonance peak) energies in $Km^3$ excavation gap should be observable . Hunting air shower in the night toward high mountains in Canyons or in a deep excavation may be the best and cheapest way to discover UHE neutrinos, either born by electron anti neutrino scattering on electrons at PeV energies, or by direct tau neutrino possibly relic of muonic flavour oscillation even at EeV energies.
