Boundary transfer matrices arising from quantum symmetric pairs

We introduce a universal framework for boundary transfer matrices, inspired by Sklyanin's two-row transfer matrix approach for quantum integrable systems with boundary conditions. The main examples arise from quantum symmetric pairs of finite and affine type. As a special case we recover a construction by Kolb in finite type. We review recent work on universal solutions to the reflection equation and highlight several open problems in this field.

Monodromy of the Casimir connection of a symmetrisable Kac-Moody algebra

Let g be a symmetrisable Kac-Moody algebra and V an integrable g-module in category O. We show that the monodromy of the (normally ordered) rational Casimir connection on V can be made equivariant with respect to the Weyl group W of g, and therefore defines an action of the braid group B_W of W on V. We then prove that this action is canonically equivalent to the quantum Weyl group action of B_W on a quantum deformation of V, that is an integrable, category O-module V_h over the quantum group U_h(g) such that V_h/hV_h is isomorphic to V. This extends a result of the second author which is valid for g semisimple.

Tensor K-matrices for quantum symmetric pairs

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra, $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ its quantum group, and $U_q(\mathfrak{k}) \subset U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ a quantum symmetric pair subalgebra determined by a Lie algebra automorphism $\theta$. We introduce a category $W_\theta$ of weight $U_q(\mathfrak{k})$-modules, which is acted on by the category of weight $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$-modules via tensor products. We construct a universal tensor K-matrix $\mathbb{K}$ (that is, a solution of a reflection equation) in a completion of $U_q(\mathfrak{k}) \otimes U_q(\mathfrak{g})$. This yields a natural operator on any tensor product $M \otimes V$, where $M\in W_\theta$ and $V\in {O}_\theta$, that is $V$ is a $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$-module in category ${O}$ satisfying an integrability property determined by $\theta$. Canonically, $W_\theta$ is equipped with a structure of a bimodule category over ${O}_\theta$ and the action of $\mathbb{K}$ is encoded by a new categorical structure, which we call a boundary structure on $W_\theta$. This generalizes a result of Kolb which describes a braided module structure on finite-dimensional $U_q(\mathfrak{k})$-modules when $\mathfrak{g}$ is finite-dimensional. We also consider our construction in the case of the category ${C}$ of finite-dimensional modules over a quantum affine algebra, providing the most comprehensive universal framework to date for large families of solutions of parameter-dependent reflection equations. In this case the tensor K-matrix gives rise to a formal Laurent series with a well-defined action on tensor products of any module in $W_\theta$ and any module in ${C}$. This series can be normalized to an operator-valued rational function, which we call trigonometric tensor K-matrix, if both factors in the tensor product are in ${C}$.

Pure braid group actions on category O modules

Let g be a symmetrisable Kac-Moody algebra and U_h(g) its quantised enveloping algebra. Answering a question of P. Etingof, we prove that the quantum Weyl group operators of U_h(g) give rise to a canonical action of the pure braid group of g on any category O (not necessarily integrable) U_h(g)-module V. By relying on our recent results in arXiv:1512.03041, we show that this action describes the monodromy of the rational Casimir connection on the g-module corresponding to V under the Etingof-Kazhdan equivalence of category O for g and U_h(g). We also extend these results to yield equivalent quantum Weyl group and monodromic representations of parabolic pure braid groups on parabolic category O for U_h(g) and g.

Generalized Schur-Weyl dualities for quantum affine symmetric pairs and orientifold KLR algebras

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a complex simple Lie algebra and $U_qL\mathfrak{g}$ the corresponding quantum affine algebra. We construct a functor ${}^θ{\sf F}$ between finite-dimensional modules over a quantum symmetric pair of affine type $U_q\mathfrak{k}\subset U_qL{\mathfrak{g}}$ and an orientifold KLR algebra arising from a framed quiver with a contravariant involution, providing a boundary analogue of Kang-Kashiwara-Kim-Oh generalized Schur-Weyl duality. With respect to their construction, our combinatorial model is further enriched with the poles of a trigonometric K-matrix intertwining the action of $U_q\mathfrak{k}$ on finite-dimensional $U_qL{\mathfrak{g}}$-modules. By construction, ${}^θ{\sf F}$ is naturally compatible with the Kang-Kashiwara-Kim-Oh functor in that, while the latter is a functor of monoidal categories, ${}^θ{\sf F}$ is a functor of module categories. Relying on a suitable isomorphism à la Brundan-Kleshchev-Rouquier, we prove that ${}^θ{\sf F}$ recovers the Schur-Weyl dualities due to Fan-Lai-Li-Luo-Wang-Watanabe in quasi-split type $\sf AIII$.

The R-matrix of the affine Yangian

Let g be an affine Lie algebra with associated Yangian Y_hg. We prove the existence of two meromorphic R-matrices associated to any pair of representations of Y_hg in the category O. They are related by a unitary constraint and constructed as products of the form R(s)=R^+(s)R^0(s)R^-(s), where R^+(s) = R^-_{21}(-s)^{-1}. The factor R^0(s) is a meromorphic, abelian R-matrix, and R^-(s) is a rational twist. Our proof relies on two novel ingredients. The first is an irregular, abelian, additive difference equation whose difference operator is given in terms of the q-Cartan matrix of g. The regularization of this difference equation gives rise to R^0(s) as the exponentials of the two canonical fundamental solutions. The second key ingredient is a higher order analogue of the adjoint action of the affine Cartan subalgebra of g on Y_hg. This action has no classical counterpart, and produces a system of linear equations from which R^-(s) is recovered as the unique solution. Moreover, we show that both operators give rise to the same rational R-matrix on the tensor product of any two highest-weight representations.

On a conjecture of Khoroshkin and Tolstoy

We prove a no-go theorem on the factorization of the lower triangular part in the Gaussian decomposition of the Yangian's universal $R$-matrix, yielding a negative answer to a conjecture of Khoroshkin and Tolstoy from [Lett. Math. Phys. vol. 36 1996].

Trigonometric K-matrices for finite-dimensional representations of quantum affine algebras

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a complex simple Lie algebra and $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})$ the corresponding quantum affine algebra. We prove that every irreducible finite-dimensional $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})$-module gives rise to a family of trigonometric solutions of Cherednik's generalized reflection equation. These depend upon the choice of a quantum affine symmetric pair $U_q(\mathfrak{k})\subset U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})$. Our result relies on the construction of universal K-matrices for arbitrary quantum symmetric pairs, obtained in our previous work, as well as the fact that every irreducible $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})$-module is generically irreducible under restriction to $U_q({\mathfrak{k}})$. In the case of small modules and Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules, we obtain new solutions of the standard and the transposed reflection equations.

Continuum Kac-Moody algebras

We introduce a new class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, which we refer to as continuum Kac-Moody algebras. Their construction is closely related to that of usual Kac-Moody algebras, but they feature a continuum root system with no simple roots. Their Cartan datum encodes the topology of a one-dimensional real space and can be thought of as a generalization of a quiver, where vertices are replaced by connected intervals. For these Lie algebras, we prove an analogue of the Gabber-Kac-Serre theorem, providing a complete set of defining relations featuring only quadratic Serre relations. Moreover, we provide an alternative realization as continuum colimits of symmetric Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebras with at most isotropic simple roots. The approach we follow deeply relies on the more general notion of a semigroup Lie algebra and its structural properties.

Quantization of continuum Kac-Moody algebras

Continuum Kac-Moody algebras have been recently introduced by the authors and O. Schiffmann. These are Lie algebras governed by a continuum root system, which can be realized as uncountable colimits of Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebras. In this paper, we prove that any continuum Kac-Moody algebra is canonically endowed with a non-degenerate invariant bilinear form. The positive and negative Borel subalgebras form a Manin triple with respect to this pairing, inducing on the continuum Kac-Moody algebra a topological quasi-triangular Lie bialgebra structure. We then construct an explicit quantization, which we refer to as a continuum quantum group, and we show that the latter is similarly realized as an uncountable colimit of Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum groups.

Universal K-matrices for quantum Kac-Moody algebras

We introduce the notion of a cylindrical bialgebra, which is a quasitriangular bialgebra $H$ endowed with a universal K-matrix, i.e., a universal solution of a generalized reflection equation, yielding an action of cylindrical braid groups on tensor products of its representations. We prove that new examples of such universal K-matrices arise from quantum symmetric pairs of Kac-Moody type and depend upon the choice of a pair of generalized Satake diagrams. In finite type, this yields a refinement of a result obtained by Balagovi\'c and Kolb, producing a family of non-equivalent solutions interpolating between the quasi-K-matrix originally due to Bao and Wang and the full universal K-matrix. Finally, we prove that this construction yields formal solutions of the generalized reflection equation with a spectral parameter in the case of finite-dimensional representations over the quantum affine algebra $U_qL\mathfrak{sl}_2$.

Coxeter categories and quantum groups

We define the notion of braided Coxeter category, which is informally a tensor category carrying compatible, commuting actions of a generalised braid group B_W and Artin's braid groups B_n on the tensor powers of its objects. The data which defines the action of B_W bears a formal similarity to the associativity constraints in a monoidal category, but is related to the coherence of a family of fiber functors. We show that the quantum Weyl group operators of a quantised Kac-Moody algebra U_h(g), together with the universal R-matrices of its Levi subalgebras, give rise to a braided Coxeter structure on integrable, category O-modules for U_h(g). By relying on the 2-categorical extension of Etingof-Kazhdan quantisation obtained in arXiv:1610.09744, we then prove that this structure can be transferred to integrable, category O-representations of g. These results are used in arXiv:1512.03041 to give a monodromic description of the quantum Weyl group operators of U_h(g) which extends the one obtained by the second author for a semisimple Lie algebra.

Uniqueness of Coxeter structures on Kac-Moody algebras

Let g be a symmetrisable Kac-Moody algebra, and U_h(g) the corresponding quantum group. We showed in arXiv:1610.09744 and arXiv:1610.09741 that the braided quasi-Coxeter structure on integrable, category O representations of U_h(g) which underlies the R-matrix actions arising from the Levi subalgebras of U_h(g) and the quantum Weyl group action of the generalised braid group B_g can be transferred to integrable, category O representations of g. We prove in this paper that, up to unique equivalence, there is a unique such structure on the latter category with prescribed restriction functors, R--matrices, and local monodromies. This extends, simplifies and strengthens a similar result of the second author valid when g is semisimple, and is used in arXiv:1512.03041 to describe the monodromy of the rational Casimir connection of g in terms of the quantum Weyl group operators of U_h(g). Our main tool is a refinement of Enriquez's universal algebras, which is adapted to the PROP describing a Lie bialgebra graded by the non-negative roots of g.

A 2-categorical extension of Etingof-Kazhdan quantisation

Let k be a field of characteristic zero. Etingof and Kazhdan constructed a quantisation U_h(b) of any Lie bialgebra b over k, which depends on the choice of an associator Phi. They prove moreover that this quantisation is functorial in b. Remarkably, the quantum group U_h(b) is endowed with a Tannakian equivalence F_b from the braided tensor category of Drinfeld-Yetter modules over b, with deformed associativity constraints given by Phi, to that of Drinfeld-Yetter modules over U_h(b). In this paper, we prove that the equivalence F_b is functorial in b.

An explicit isomorphism between quantum and classical sl(n)

Let g be a complex, semisimple Lie algebra. Drinfeld showed that the quantum group associated to g is isomorphic as an algebra to the trivial deformation of the universal enveloping algebra of g. In this paper we construct explicitly such an isomorphism when g = sl(n), previously known only for n=2.

A DG-extension of symmetric functions arising from higher representation theory

We investigate analogs of symmetric functions arising from an extension of the nilHecke algebra defined by Naisse and Vaz. These extended symmetric functions form a subalgebra of the polynomial ring tensored with an exterior algebra. We define families of bases for this algebra and show that it admits a family of differentials making it a sub-DG-algebra of the extended nilHecke algebra. The ring of extended symmetric functions equipped with this differential is quasi-isomorphic to the cohomology of a Grassmannian. We also introduce new deformed differentials on the extended nilHecke algebra that when restricted makes extended symmetric functions quasi-isomorphic to $GL(N)$-equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians.

Quasi-Coxeter categories and a relative Etingof-Kazhdan quantization functor

Let g be a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra and U_h(g) its quantized enveloping algebra. The quantum Weyl group operators of U_h(g) and the universal R-matrices of its Levi subalgebras endow U_h(g) with a natural quasi-Coxeter quasitriangular quasibialgebra structure which underlies the action of the braid group of g and Artin's braid groups on the tensor product of integrable, category O modules. We show that this structure can be transferred to the universal enveloping algebra Ug[[h]]. The proof relies on a modification of the Etingof-Kazhdan quantization functor, and yields an isomorphism between (appropriate completions of) U_h(g) and Ug[[h]] preserving a given chain of Levi subalgebras. We carry it out in the more general context of chains of Manin triples, and obtain in particular a relative version of the Etingof-Kazhdan functor with input a split pair of Lie bialgebras. Along the way, we develop the notion of quasi-Coxeter categories, which are to generalized braid groups what braided tensor categories are to Artin's braid groups. This leads to their succint description as a 2-functor from a 2-category whose morphisms are De Concini-Procesi associahedra. These results will be used in the sequel to this paper to give a monodromic description of the quantum Weyl group operators of an affine Kac-Moody algebra, extending the one obtained by the second author for a semisimple Lie algebra.
